Illinois State Fair Campground About

For Illinois residents looking for a practical, affordable, and well-located place to stay while exploring the rich history and vibrant events of Springfield, the Illinois State Fair Campground offers an excellent solution. Far from being just a temporary spot during the annual State Fair, this campground operates for much of the year, providing a unique and convenient base for RVers and tent campers alike. It's truly "a good place to stop for the night," as one visitor aptly put it, and much more.

What sets the Illinois State Fair Campground apart is its compelling combination of affordability and essential amenities. Campers consistently highlight its "inexpensive" rates, noting that "All sites have water and electricity," with "a few sewer hookups." This makes it a fantastic value, especially when compared to other lodging options in the capital city. The convenience doesn't stop there; one delighted visitor described it as "An unexpected gem!" praising the "Lots of choices for campsites, large bathroom/shower and electricity for only $25 a night! Just $20 for seniors, and they even refunded us $5 when they saw we didn’t hook up to the electric." Such flexibility and customer-friendly policies underscore the welcoming nature of the campground.

Beyond the practicalities, the campground offers a unique charm. Visitors have even been treated to "surprise entertainment in a Belgian draft horse exhibition," showcasing the dynamic environment of the fairgrounds. The staff's friendliness is another recurring theme, with campers remarking, "People were super friendly here, too. We couldn’t ask for more." This blend of affordability, essential services, unexpected delights, and a friendly atmosphere makes the Illinois State Fair Campground a highly suitable and enjoyable choice for Illinois locals looking to immerse themselves in all that Springfield has to offer, whether during fair season or the quieter months.

Location and Accessibility

The Illinois State Fair Campground is strategically located at 801 E. Sangamon Ave., Springfield, IL 62702, USA. This places it on the north end of Springfield, the capital city of Illinois, within the sprawling Illinois State Fairgrounds. Its position offers a unique advantage: campers are right on the grounds where numerous events take place year-round, and they are remarkably close to some of the state's most significant historical attractions.

Accessibility for Illinois residents is straightforward. The fairgrounds are approximately 2 miles from Interstate 55's Sangamon Avenue exit (Exit 100B), making it easy to reach from both north and south. For those traveling from major Illinois cities: from Chicago, it's about a 3.5-hour drive south; from St. Louis, Missouri (just across the border), it's roughly 1.5 hours north; from Peoria, it's about an hour; and from Champaign-Urbana, it's around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The urban setting ensures well-maintained roads leading directly to the campground entrance, which is typically Gate 11. Ample parking is available, and the relatively flat, open nature of the fairgrounds makes it easy for all types of RVs and camping setups to navigate. This central location within the state capital means campers are not only enjoying an outdoor experience but are also mere minutes away from cultural, historical, and entertainment venues, making it an incredibly convenient base for exploring Springfield.

Promotions or Special Offers

The Illinois State Fair Campground, managed by the state, offers structured pricing and specific discounts rather than traditional "promotions" in the commercial sense. However, these provide considerable value for Illinois residents:

  • Affordable Rates: The base rates are already very competitive. For the period outside of the main August State Fair:
    • Tent sites: $25.00 per night (limited to 5 consecutive days).
    • Regular RV sites: $35.00 per night.
    • Senior (60 and older) and Veteran rates: $30.00 per night (with valid ID that matches the permit name).
    • Holiday rates apply to Memorial Day and Labor Day weeks (Monday before through Sunday nights), with slightly higher prices (e.g., $30 for tents, $40 for regular RV, $35 for seniors/veterans).
  • State Fair Period Rates (August): During the actual Illinois State Fair, rates are higher due to demand:
    • RV camping: $50 per night.
    • Tent camping: $25 per night (sites do not include electricity or water during this specific period).
  • Potential "Stay & Play" Promotions: In previous years, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and Department of Agriculture have partnered to offer promotions, such as two free nights of camping at select state parks (not directly the Fairground campground, but nearby) with the purchase of an Illinois State Fair Admission Booklet. It's advisable to check the Illinois State Fair and IDNR websites annually for any re-issuance of such programs.
  • Ease of Access to Fairground Events: While not a discount, camping directly on the fairgrounds provides unparalleled access to various events, shows, and attractions happening throughout the year, some of which may be free with campground access.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on rates, availability, and specific booking procedures (especially for the busy August State Fair period), it is essential to consult the official Illinois State Fairgrounds website or contact the campground directly.

A good place to stop for the night. Lots of parking. Inexpensive. All sites have water and electricity. A few have sewer hookups. Very close to one of the best Abe Lincoln museums in the country and also to Lincoln's tomb if you'd like something to do for a while.

Just $20 for seniors, and they even refunded us $5 when they saw we didn’t hook up to the electric. Plus, we got a surprise entertainment in a Belgian draft horse exhibition going on this weekend. Great spot for camping at the best price you will ever find. We just used for a stopover to dump and fill relax a bit. Will always make a stop here when traveling. Not actual pics of campground, but that is what we were driving.

Great location and convenient campground for visiting Springfield area sites. Campsites are basic well maintained, clean and have electric and water facilities. Not a fancy resort style campground. Good security and quiet area.

Can’t beat the convenience and price. Stayed 2 nights, had a full hook up, water pressure was great. Will definitely use this campground again when passing through town. We chose our own site, some are more level than others but really not an issue. Heard a couple of trains pass by in the evening. The parking lot (we chose to park in) was empty when we went to sleep and full of cars the next morning. Wasn’t expecting it but also not a problem for a couple day lay over. There were other areas we could have parked that might have been more private, the man in the office said they have 1100 sites here.
