The essence of a great camping trip often lies in seamless planning and clear communication. Lake Durant Campground, with its beautiful open areas and direct access to the water, holds immense potential for a memorable experience. However, as noted in customer reviews, there might be instances where navigation within the campground, particularly for tent sites, requires a bit more clarity than usual. Understanding these nuances beforehand can help you prepare for a more relaxed arrival and setup.

The allure of "amazing fishing" is a strong draw for many Oklahomans to Lake Durant. Imagine spending your days by the water, reeling in your catch, and your evenings under the stars. The campground provides the fundamental access to this experience. Despite some reported challenges with site identification and after-hours communication, the core offering of a beautiful natural setting remains a significant advantage for those looking to immerse themselves in Oklahoma's outdoors.

Ultimately, a successful camping trip is about finding a balance between the natural beauty of the location and the convenience of the facilities. Lake Durant Campground provides the stunning backdrop for your outdoor adventures. Location and Accessibility

Lake Durant Campground is uniquely situated on an Unnamed Road, Durant, OK 74701, USA. This description often implies a location that is somewhat off the main thoroughfare, providing a more secluded and natural setting, which is desirable for many campers. Despite being on an "Unnamed Road," its connection to the city of Durant ensures a balance between rustic charm and accessibility to essential services.

Durant, Oklahoma, serves as a vibrant city in Bryan County, celebrated for its proximity to large recreational lakes, most notably Lake Texoma, and of course, Lake Durant itself. The campground's location by Lake Durant means campers have direct and easy access to the water, a significant advantage for fishing, boating, and enjoying lakeside activities. While the specific "Unnamed Road" suggests it might be a turn-off from a main road leading to the lake, its overall position in Durant ensures you are never too far from necessities.

For those traveling to Lake Durant Campground, it's advisable to use GPS coordinates or specific directions provided by the campground itself, as "Unnamed Road" can be vague. However, once you arrive in the vicinity of Lake Durant within Durant city limits, local signage should guide you. The ease of access to the water is a consistent highlight, suggesting that once you're there, the natural beauty is readily available.

The city of Durant offers all the conveniences a camper might need before or during their stay. This includes grocery stores for stocking up on supplies, gas stations, bait and tackle shops, and various dining options. The blend of a peaceful lakeside setting with the practical amenities of a nearby city makes Lake Durant Campground an attractive spot for many Oklahomans looking for both outdoor immersion and convenient support.

While the initial navigation to an "Unnamed Road" might require a bit of attention, the reward is a beautiful open area with direct access to the very lake that gives the campground its name, promising a serene and natural escape.

Services Offered

Campgrounds, by their nature, offer a range of services designed to facilitate an outdoor experience. While specific detailed services for Lake Durant Campground would best be confirmed directly with the management, based on typical campground offerings and the provided customer feedback, the following services can generally be expected:

  • RV Spots: The campground clearly offers dedicated RV spots, which are typically equipped with electrical hookups (often 30-amp and/or 50-amp) for power, and potentially water and sewer connections, depending on the specific site type. The customer review mentions "RV spots were obvious," indicating their clear designation.

  • Tent Sites: While the process of finding them may require clarification, tent sites are available. These generally provide a cleared, level area for setting up tents, and sometimes include a picnic table and fire ring. The feedback suggests these are more primitive, often without direct utility hookups.

  • Restrooms/Bathhouses: Most established campgrounds provide communal restroom and shower facilities for campers, especially for tent campers who do not have these amenities within their setup. The availability and cleanliness of these would be key for comfort.

  • Water Access: Being a lakeside campground, easy access to Lake Durant for fishing, boating, and other water activities is a primary service and major draw. The review confirms "easy access to the water."

  • After-Hours Assistance (Potential Area for Improvement): While phone contact was attempted after hours, the review indicates that direct support or clear guidance might be limited outside of regular office hours. Campers should be prepared for self-reliance during these times.

  • Basic Ground Maintenance: As implied by the "beautiful grounds," there is likely ongoing maintenance to keep the common areas, roads, and campsites clear and functional.

Features / Highlights

Lake Durant Campground offers several compelling features that make it a desirable destination for campers and outdoor enthusiasts in Oklahoma, despite some noted operational challenges. These highlights contribute significantly to the overall experience:

  • Excellent Fishing Opportunities: A top highlight, confirmed by a review stating "Had an amazing 2 days fishing." This makes the campground a prime spot for anglers looking to catch fish in Lake Durant.

  • Beautiful Grounds: The "grounds is beautiful" according to a customer. This suggests well-maintained natural areas, providing a pleasant aesthetic and an inviting atmosphere for outdoor activities and relaxation.

  • Nice Open Area: The presence of a "nice open area" offers space for recreation, relaxation, and a sense of openness, which can be a relief from more cramped camping spots found elsewhere. This also potentially provides views of the lake or surrounding nature.

  • Easy Access to the Water: This is a crucial feature for a lakeside campground, enabling convenient launching of small boats, kayaks, or simply getting to the shore for fishing or enjoying the views.

  • Designated RV Spots: The clear designation of RV spots, even if tent sites are less obvious, ensures that RV campers have structured and suitable places to set up their vehicles.

  • Proximity to Durant Amenities: While offering a natural escape, the campground's location in Durant ensures that campers are not isolated from essential services like grocery stores, gas, and bait shops, which adds convenience to the rustic experience.

  • Potential for Primitive Camping: Despite the site confusion, the fact that tent campers were preparing for "primal camping" and didn't need electricity suggests that the environment can support a more back-to-basics camping style, appealing to those who prefer minimalist setups.

It is important for prospective campers to note the feedback regarding difficulty finding tent sites, the lack of clear signage or after-hours guidance, and a perceived "arm-twisty" approach to additional charges for tent campers in RV spots. While the natural beauty is undeniable, being prepared for potential self-guided navigation and confirming specific site assignments, especially if arriving after hours, is crucial for a smoother experience.

So I'm torn. My family and I are traveling and had planned to camp one night each leg of the trip. First off, the grounds is beautiful. Nice open area and easy access to the water. The issue came to the campground. The rv spots were obvious. We couldn't find any signs where to find the tent sites, or an office. I tried to call but didnt realize come through as it was after 5. The email confirmations dont have any clear direction and the only mention of site locatiom on tbe website are the Proposed Changes to the location of where the tent sites would be. Some maintenence gentlemen told me theyve seen people just picking a spot and setting up tents around the Rvs. So we did that. We were almost set up when a different gentleman pulled up and told us that he usually charges people am extra $10 and put tent campers in the rv spot without water running...and simply because we were already so close to being done set up he wouldnt force us to move to the other site but that next time he wanted me to pay for another tent site and use the rv spot. Thats nice and all and I know its only another $10...but ive chosen not to go back for our back home treck. Because it felt kind of arm twisty. I prepayed a tent site, expected a tent site, but couldnt find them and some guy shows up later wanting me to pay more money for only a couple hours rest when we packed prepared for primal camping and dont need or have anything that needs electricity from the rv site. And this guy showing up wanting more money but if he saw that he had a tent site and have these hidden 'i usually's but he couldnt call me and let me know or make sure we were coming? Especially before the office closed to let me know? It seems very odd.

The pavilions are not well kept and not clean, cobwebs everywhere on the benches and the benches are very rusty (i hope i dont have to get a tetanus shot just from sitting at one of the benches from how much rust was on it) , wasps and spiders pretty much took over the pavilions and the bathrooms. Spiders all over the bathroom, wasp nests on the bathroom walls. The brick stoves at both pavilions are broken and unusable. It is evident that no one takes care of the pavilions anymore nor cleans the bathrooms. At the second pavilion where the tree swing is the water source does not work at all and doesn't appear to be connected to anything. The bathrooms are not air conditioned and are incredibly uncomfortable to be in for periods of time due to the summer heat and the light cover in the men's bathroom is broken. Update 07/20/23: trash cans are overflowing, grass in much of the park is overgrown, toilet paper is always out in the bathrooms, in the men's bathroom the shower is broken and does not function. Only shower that works in the park is the women's side. the park manager won't do anything about fixing these problems and the park is also not very well lit at night and it's dangerous to drive at night for anyone who have issues with night driving. Both pavilions have spiderweb everywhere including under the tables and have wasp nests which can be a danger for anyone allergic to bee or wasp stings. My mother got bit on the foot by a spider at one of the pavilions and we are lucky it wasn't a brown recluse (fiddle-back) because she got sick for a while afterward. The manager is not very friendly towards dog owners and often blames them for issues with the park. (Update August 17 2023) I found out that someone contacted code enforcement and animal control on me and my mom and our animals even though we were only there for a little bit for a picnic. Mike may have called on us, we also found out someone has been making false rumors about us and constantly stared at us. I will never return to this park and I suggest no one gives them any business because they do not maintain this park very well and the lake is filled with dangerous levels of algae. The swing is unsafe and chains damaged and we also had someone impersonate a code enforcer twice threatening us. Do not camp here because they will charge people who aren't local twice as much as someone who lives locally. Don't let your dogs drink the water from this park, my dogs got very sick from drinking the water from the rv slots water spickets. I honestly hope my dogs don't die from the water there because I will take Mike to court.
