Lake Gogebic County Park About
For us Michiganders, the Upper Peninsula holds a special place in our hearts – a vast expanse of natural beauty, serene lakes, and endless opportunities for outdoor adventure. When the call of the wild becomes too strong to ignore, finding that perfect camping spot that truly captures the essence of the U.P. is key. Lake Gogebic County Park, nestled in Marenisco, MI, offers just that: a picturesque escape that promises stunning lake views and a peaceful retreat, especially during the breathtaking fall color season. It's a place where the landscape itself sets the scene for an unforgettable Michigan outdoor experience.
Lake Gogebic County Park is a destination that truly lets you immerse yourself in the natural splendor of Michigan's largest inland lake. Imagine waking up to the gentle calm of the lake, watching the sun rise over its expansive waters, or simply enjoying the peaceful quiet that permeates the air. Many visitors highlight the sheer beauty of the location, particularly during autumn when the surrounding foliage erupts in a vibrant display of color, creating a truly magnificent backdrop for your camping trip. Even a simple walk around the grounds can bring a profound sense of calm, making it a perfect antidote to the stresses of daily life.
While it's a fantastic spot for RV camping, the park's natural allure extends to all visitors, whether you arrive in a full-sized rig or just your passenger vehicle. The primary draw remains the lake itself, which not only provides picturesque views year-round but also offers an abundance of recreational activities. From casting a line for walleye and smallmouth bass to cruising the expansive waters, Lake Gogebic ensures there's always something to do. Despite its offerings, the park maintains a peaceful ambiance, allowing you to truly relax and reconnect with nature. It’s a place where the focus is on the simple joys of being outdoors in one of Michigan's most beautiful regions.
Lake Gogebic County Park is strategically located at N8598 M-64, Marenisco, MI 49947, USA. This places it directly on the shores of Lake Gogebic, Michigan's largest inland lake, in the heart of the Western Upper Peninsula. Marenisco is a township in Gogebic County, an area renowned for its dense forests, numerous lakes, and proximity to other major U.P. attractions.
For Michiganders, reaching Lake Gogebic County Park typically involves a scenic drive through the diverse landscapes of the Upper Peninsula. M-64, a state highway, provides relatively straightforward access to the park. While the exact location feels wonderfully remote, offering that desired "get away from it all" vibe, it's still connected to the regional road network. The park's direct frontage on Lake Gogebic means immediate access to boating, fishing, and water sports. This is a significant advantage for campers bringing their own watercraft or looking to enjoy the expansive lake. The surrounding area offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including extensive ATV and snowmobile trail systems, making it a viable destination for year-round adventure. Its location also puts it within reasonable driving distance of other U.P. highlights, such as the Ottawa National Forest and potentially the eastern edges of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, offering additional avenues for exploration.
It's important for visitors to note that while the park offers stunning views of the lake, some areas, particularly the higher parts of the campground, may have fewer trees directly at the campsites. This can impact shade, especially for tent campers, but it often enhances the panoramic lake views. RV campers should also be prepared for potentially unlevel sites and may need extra long water hoses for hookups, as some reviews suggest needing up to 75 feet. This practical advice helps ensure a smooth setup upon arrival.
-
Varied Campsites with Views: Lake Gogebic County Park offers a selection of campsites, many providing direct views of the expansive Lake Gogebic. These sites cater to both RVs and tent campers. While some sites may have fewer trees directly on them (especially those higher up for better views), they provide a great sense of open space and direct exposure to the natural beauty.
-
Electric and Water Hookups: Many sites are equipped with electric and water hookups, providing essential amenities for RV and trailer campers. However, it's advised to bring an extra-long water hose (up to 75 feet recommended by some visitors) due to potential variations in hookup locations.
-
Boat Launch and Docks: Given its prime location on Lake Gogebic, the park features a boat launch for easy access to Michigan's largest inland lake. Docks are also available for convenient mooring of watercraft, making it ideal for fishing and boating enthusiasts.
-
Restroom Facilities: The park provides access to restroom facilities for campers. While specific details on modern amenities like showers are not extensively highlighted in the provided reviews, a county park typically offers basic, functional facilities.
-
Picnic Areas: Designated picnic areas are available within the park, providing spots for day visitors or campers to enjoy meals outdoors by the lake.
-
No Wood for Sale (Important Note): Based on visitor reviews, it's crucial to note that firewood may not be available for sale directly at the campground. Campers should plan to bring their own firewood or purchase it from nearby vendors before arriving, while always adhering to local regulations regarding outside firewood.
-
No On-Site County Personnel (Potentially): Some reviews indicate that there may not always be county personnel on-site, especially during mid-September. This implies a more self-service approach to camping, with reliance on honor systems for payments and adherence to rules.

-

-
"In the Middle of Nowhere" Feel: Despite having basic amenities, the park maintains a remote and secluded feel, allowing campers to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural environment of the U.P.
-
Photographic Opportunities: The picturesque views of Lake Gogebic and the vibrant fall colors make the campground an excellent spot for photography enthusiasts.
As a county park, Lake Gogebic County Park typically operates on a set fee schedule rather than offering extensive commercial promotions. However, for those of us in Michigan looking for value, it's always wise to inquire about the following:
-
Seasonal Rates: Camping fees can sometimes vary depending on the time of year, with shoulder seasons (like early spring or late fall, outside of peak color season) potentially offering slightly lower rates or more availability. Given the positive reviews for fall camping, visiting during this less crowded, yet incredibly beautiful, time could be a "special offer" in itself.
-
Long-Term Stay Discounts: While not explicitly stated, some county parks may provide a reduced nightly rate for stays exceeding a certain duration (e.g., weekly or monthly rates). This would need to be confirmed directly with the park management.
-
Local Resident Benefits: Occasionally, county parks may offer preferential rates for residents of Gogebic County. While not universally applied, it's worth inquiring if you're a local resident.
The true "offer" of Lake Gogebic County Park lies in its naturally stunning location and the relatively affordable access it provides to the beauty of Michigan's largest inland lake. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees and any potential minor specials, contacting the park directly is the best course of action.

Customer Reviews
Stayed two nights in mid September. Nice place to camp in the Fall. Very little trees except higher up in campground. Nice view of the lake. No county personnel on site when we were there. No wood for sale. Bring extra hose for water hookup. We needed 75 feet. They say they have pull thrus but not for a 37 ft RV. Sites are not very level either.
Visited during peak fall color season. Absolutely beautiful and a peaceful calm came over me as I walked the grounds. While RV camping is permitted and encouraged, I found myself visiting in my passenger vehicle. Lake Gogebic sets the scene for picturesque views anytime of year, while providing abundant recreational activities!
Nice UTV riding and fishing. Absolutely love this place.
Clean campground, clean restrooms and everyone was very friendly. The sites are close together so don't expect too much privacy.
Husband & I took a fall trip, stopped at this beautiful park if we had a camper diffidently would be on our list.
