Pomeroy Lake Campground About
For those of us here in Michigan who truly cherish the tranquility and untouched beauty of our state's Upper Peninsula, finding a secluded camping spot that offers both stunning views and a genuine escape is a rare treat. Pomeroy Lake Campground, nestled within the vast Ottawa National Forest near Watersmeet, MI, is precisely that kind of discovery. This isn't a bustling resort campground; it's a peaceful haven designed for those who appreciate the quiet hum of nature, the beauty of a clear lake, and the privacy of well-spaced, wooded sites. If you’re a Michigander seeking a true wilderness immersion, especially during the breathtaking fall season, Pomeroy Lake Campground offers an unparalleled experience.
Pomeroy Lake Campground is celebrated for its stunning natural setting, particularly its numerous lakefront sites that offer truly spectacular views. Imagine waking up to the gentle mist rising off the lake, or enjoying a campfire under a canopy of stars with the water glinting nearby – moments that are truly unforgettable. What sets this campground apart for many is its relatively low usage, particularly outside of peak summer months. This often means you can enjoy a profound sense of solitude, sometimes even having the entire place to yourself, making it an ideal spot for those seeking genuine peace and quiet.
One of the most appealing features for savvy Michigan campers is the opportunity for free late-season camping. From October through mid-May, no fees are charged, and while potable water is not available during this period, the brand-new vault toilets remain accessible. This makes Pomeroy Lake Campground a prime location to experience the Upper Peninsula’s gorgeous fall colors in all their glory, often without the crowds. Even during the fee-charging season (mid-May through September), the presence of a hand pump for water, picnic tables, and fire rings at each well-spaced site ensures a comfortable, rustic experience. The lake itself is inviting, with a boat launch immediately adjacent to the campground and several spots along the shore that look perfectly swimmable, inviting you to cool off on a warm U.P. day. Just remember to keep a close eye on pets, as this rugged area is home to various predators.
Pomeroy Lake Campground is located near Watersmeet, MI 49969, USA. This places it deep within the expansive and largely undeveloped Ottawa National Forest, a true gem in Michigan's western Upper Peninsula. Watersmeet itself is a small community known for its vast natural surroundings, including numerous lakes, rivers, and extensive forest lands, making it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Accessibility to Pomeroy Lake Campground aligns with its rustic and secluded nature. It is typically accessed via forest roads within the Ottawa National Forest. While these roads are generally navigable, visitors should be prepared for unpaved sections and varying conditions, especially during or after inclement weather. For Michiganders traveling to this area, the journey itself becomes part of the wilderness experience, leading you away from paved highways into a more tranquil setting. The campground's location directly on Pomeroy Lake provides immediate water access for boating, fishing, and swimming, which is a significant draw.
Furthermore, being situated within the Ottawa National Forest means easy access to a wider network of recreational opportunities beyond the immediate campground. This includes numerous hiking trails, potentially connecting to sections of the North Country National Scenic Trail, as well as opportunities for mountain biking, hunting, and wildlife viewing. In the winter, the area transforms into a wonderland for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing, though specific access for these activities from the campground during the off-season would depend on snow conditions and road closures. The serene and somewhat remote location ensures a peaceful retreat, ideal for those seeking to truly immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the Upper Peninsula.

Remember that during the free camping period, services like potable water are turned off, and campers must be entirely self-sufficient. Numerous lakefront sites with spectacular views. Relatively low usage. Brand new vault toilets. A prime location for free late-season camping. Gorgeous fall colors. From mid-May through September, fees are charged and water is available at a hand pump. The remainder of the year the only amenity here is the vault toilets, and no fees are charged. A boat launch is available immediately adjacent to the campground. The lake looked swimmable from several places along the shore.
Nice campground. Wooded sites are well spaced for some privacy. Nice views of lake. Picnic tables and fire rings at each site. Clean well maintained pit toilets. Keep an eye on pets as this is a rugged area with lots of predators.
