Matchwood Campground is the epitome of primitive camping, offering a truly back-to-basics experience. Unlike developed campgrounds with numerous amenities, Matchwood is a minimalist site where campers are expected to be fully self-reliant. It's a place where you bring everything you need – from water and sanitation to cooking supplies – and take everything out with you, leaving no trace behind. This approach fosters a deep connection with the natural environment, free from the distractions of modern conveniences. The campground is described as a "small area," suggesting an intimate setting, and while there are no specific details on the number of sites, it implies a more secluded experience. It's an ideal spot for those who seek quietude and a break from crowded camping areas. While the immediate surroundings might present some challenges, such as potential muddiness or evidence of past tree clearing, these are often part of the rugged charm of primitive sites. For Michigan locals looking to save on camping fees and embrace a raw, unfiltered outdoor adventure, Matchwood Campground provides an excellent opportunity to connect with nature on your own terms, fostering independence and a profound appreciation for the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula.
Matchwood Campground is located near Ewen, MI 49925, USA, placing it within Ontonagon County in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Its designation as "a small area" surrounded by private land suggests it might be a tucked-away spot, possibly managed by a state or federal entity but providing minimal services. While the exact driving directions aren't detailed in the provided information, its location near Ewen implies accessibility via state and county roads that serve this rural part of the UP. Customer Reviews
This site is a free oasis in a sea of paid sites. The problem is that it's surrounded by private land and is a small area. Seems strange it's reserved for camping. Other than the weird location, it's primitive camping so expect to bring everything yourself. Left early, only because someone had the whole site and decided to take the one right next to me. If that didn't happen, I probably would've stayed longer.
