Accessibility to the campground is quite straightforward for residents across Illinois. Murphysboro is easily reached via Illinois Route 149 and is relatively close to major arteries like Illinois Route 13 and Interstate 57. Lake Murphysboro Campground, as a part of Lake Murphysboro State Park, offers several appealing features that make it a notable destination for campers in Illinois. These highlights contribute to its overall value and appeal:

- Outdoor Recreational Opportunities: The park is a hub for various activities. It's a "good place to camp or just spend the day," offering:
- Fishing: The lake is well-stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and crappie, making it a popular spot for anglers.
- Boating: Paddle boats, kayaks, canoes, and small fishing boats (under 10 H.P. motors) are permitted, allowing for on-water exploration and fishing (though swimming is not allowed).
- Hiking: A designated 2-mile trail offers opportunities to enjoy plant, animal, and bird life, with other paths crisscrossing the park's wooded hillsides.

- Mix of Site Types: With both tent and RV sites, including those with electric hookups, the campground accommodates various camping preferences.
- Diamond in the Rough Charm: One reviewer aptly described it as "such a diamond in the rough," implying that while it may have some rustic elements or minor quirks, its overall natural beauty and potential for enjoyable experiences make it a worthwhile discovery.
While some operational aspects, such as shower access and outhouse conditions, have drawn criticism, the core natural features and recreational opportunities remain strong highlights for visitors.
As a state park campground, Lake Murphysboro Campground typically operates under the pricing and reservation structures set by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) via the ExploreMoreIL™ website. Specific, individualized promotions or "special offers" in the traditional commercial sense are generally not common for state parks. Their rates are usually standardized based on site type (e.g., electric vs. non-electric) and season.
However, prospective campers can consider the following aspects as inherent "offers" or important financial details:
- Standardized and Published Rates: The camping fees are typically reasonable and transparent, as they are set by the state. This provides predictable and affordable access to quality outdoor experiences.
- Off-Season Camping: While some amenities like water hookups may be turned off in winter, the park remains open for camping year-round. For those "crazy enough to camp here" in colder months, as one reviewer put it, the "whole place to ourselves" can be seen as a unique and peaceful "offer" – a solitary experience many seek.
- Value for Money: Considering the variety of activities available within the park (fishing, boating, hiking, playground), the overall camping fee often represents excellent value for accessing these recreational opportunities.
- Reservation System: While not a "promotion," the ability to reserve campsites up to six months in advance via the ExploreMoreIL™ website is a valuable service that ensures campers can secure their preferred spot, especially during peak seasons and holiday weekends (which may have minimum stay requirements and increased fees).
To get the most accurate and current information on camping fees, reservation policies, and any seasonal operational changes (like water being turned off), interested individuals should consult the official Illinois Department of Natural Resources website (ExploreMoreIL™) or contact Lake Murphysboro Campground directly using the provided phone number.

Lake Murphysboro Campground, situated within Lake Murphysboro State Park, offers a compelling and multifaceted outdoor experience that makes it highly suitable for Illinois residents, particularly those in the Southern Illinois region. Despite some reported operational quirks, its core strengths align well with what many locals seek in a natural retreat.
Primarily, its suitability stems from the diverse range of outdoor activities available. For families, the presence of a playground offers a direct appeal, providing a safe and engaging space for children. Anglers will find the well-stocked lake a significant draw, with opportunities for bank fishing or taking out small boats. The ability to use paddle boats, kayaks, and canoes on the "star-shaped lake" adds another layer of recreational fun for everyone. Hikers will appreciate the designated trails and paths through the wooded hills, offering a chance to explore the natural beauty and observe local wildlife. This variety ensures that different members of a family or group can find an activity to enjoy, making it a versatile destination for a day trip or an extended camping stay.
Secondly, the natural environment itself is a major asset. The "rolling hills and woods" surrounding the lake provide a beautiful backdrop, offering a sense of calm and escape from urban environments. The unique feature of potentially cooler temperatures during hot Illinois summers is a distinct advantage, making outdoor activities more comfortable. This "diamond in the rough" quality suggests that the natural beauty and recreational potential far outweigh any minor inconveniences.
While some past reviews highlight areas for improvement, such as the cleanliness of outhouses or the reliability of the reservation system, these are aspects that can often be clarified or managed with prior communication. The presence of a shower house, even if its hours vary, is a valuable amenity for campers. For Illinois residents who appreciate state park settings, seek affordable and accessible outdoor recreation, and are content with a more rustic yet functional camping experience, Lake Murphysboro Campground remains a strong choice. It’s a place where you can connect with nature, enjoy a variety of activities, and create lasting memories in the beautiful landscape of Southern Illinois.
Customer Reviews
Such a diamond in the rough as this place is good place to camp or just spend the day with the kids playing on the playground it seems like it's cool cooler here then any other places when it's hot outside the only fall back as you can't swim on the lake but you can take paddle boats kayaks canoes are small boats on it to fish it does include a shower house as well if you do Camp here that's always nice
When we arrived, our reserved and paid for site was taken by someone else. The camp post gave us a new site, which was nice. But makes you think why there’s a reservation to begin with? Showers closed early and were far away from the camp site. Outhouses were disgusting and water pump didn’t even work. No sink or sanitizer in the outhouse. Pretty lake, but not meant for tent camping. More of an RV park. Would not visit again.
Lovely place on the lake, beautiful views. Plenty of space for tentt in the lots. Plenty of parking. If I could have changed something it would be that the showers were closer to the campground.
Beautiful place but the amount of trash at the campsites is insulting. The Governor of Illinois’ mother is no doubt ashamed of her son and his lack accomplishments.
One of the smaller parks we have been to. It's quiet and right on the lake. Kind of odd the way the spots are set up (seems to be opposite side for the fire
