Welcome, New Yorkers! When the hustle of city life calls for a serious timeout, there is one destination upstate that promises unparalleled natural splendor and a truly restful retreat: Letchworth State Park, famously known as the 'Grand Canyon of the East.' Nestled within this vast, magnificent landscape are the highly sought-after, yet delightfully secluded, Letchworth D Cabins. These cabins offer a rustic, quiet, and electricity-equipped basecamp from which to explore the stunning Genesee River Gorge, providing a unique and essential local escape for anyone in the New York region looking to reconnect with the wild beauty of the state.
The D Cabins are specifically situated to offer a quieter, more nature-focused experience. Unlike some of the park's more central and populated areas, this section, located near the historic Parade Grounds, provides a distinct sense of separation from the main flow of park visitors. This makes it an ideal spot for local residents who value peace and an authentic connection to the natural surroundings of upstate New York. While the cabins are designed to be rustic, offering a 'log cabin tent' experience as some guests affectionately call it, they include essential amenities that blend the ruggedness of camping with a crucial level of comfort, like staying dry during heavy overnight rain.
It is important for potential guests to note that these accommodations are part of a larger, cherished state park system and are managed to preserve the natural environment. They are a popular choice, particularly for those who prioritize sitting outside by a campfire over indoor luxury. Prospective visitors should be aware of the check-in process—checking in occurs at the main Letchworth State Park Visitor Center, a detail that has been known to confuse first-time visitors, so planning ahead is key.
For the New York local seeking an accessible yet transformative outdoor experience, the Letchworth D Cabins present an excellent option for creating lasting memories away from the daily grind.
Location and Accessibility
The Letchworth D Cabins are located deep within the vast expanse of Letchworth State Park, specifically in the park's southern region, on the quieter, eastern side of the Genesee River gorge. This area is historically significant, situated near the Parade Grounds, which adds a layer of quiet reverence to the location. The official mailing address for the park, which houses the cabins, is:
Address: 1 Letchworth State Park, Castile, NY 14427-1124. (The general address of Hunt, NY 14846, USA provided also points to the park region).
For those driving from the greater New York region, the park is a significant drive upstate, often taking several hours, but the journey culminates in reaching one of the most spectacular natural landmarks in the entire northeastern United States. It's an accessible drive for a weekend or multi-day escape for New Yorkers looking to explore their state's natural treasures. The D Cabins are situated on the less-traveled side of the gorge, contributing to their peaceful atmosphere.
Access to the D Cabins, as well as the nearby E Cabins, typically requires entry through the southern part of the park, such as the Castile Gate. Importantly, guests for the A, B, D, and E Cabin areas must check-in at the Visitor Center, located near the South end of the park, which is a key navigational point to remember upon arrival. This separation of the cabin areas ensures that the immediate vicinity remains relatively quiet and reserved for cabin guests.
It is also vital for visitors to know that cell service can be spotty, particularly in the South-end of the park where these cabins are located, adding to the feeling of a true, unplugged retreat. Guests should print or download necessary maps and information before their arrival.
Services Offered (D Cabins Specific)
The amenities provided with the D Cabins focus on comfort and utility while maintaining a rugged, camping-like experience. The services and amenities generally found in a small, two-person log cabin (such as the D003 model described by a customer) include:

Overhead and porch lighting
Small electric stove
Small refrigerator
Cots for sleeping (note: cots may not be suitable for combining)
Small table and wooden chairs
Outdoor fire-ring for cooking and gathering
Access to new, well-maintained, and ADA-compliant communal bathroom and shower facilities
Features / Highlights
The appeal of the Letchworth D Cabins lies in a combination of their location, amenities, and proximity to the park's world-class attractions.
Seclusion and Quiet: Located on the less public, quieter side of the Genesee River gorge, near the Parade Grounds, offering a peaceful, private, and remote camping experience.
Essential Comforts: The cabins provide a significant step up from tent camping by offering a dry, secure shelter with electricity, a fridge, and an electric stove, making it an excellent 'log cabin tent' alternative.
Access to World-Class Facilities: Despite the rustic nature of the cabins themselves, guests have access to new, clean, and modern communal bathhouses with nice showers.
Rustic Outdoor Living Focus: The inclusion of an outdoor fire-ring and ample space for setting up an overhead tarp encourages guests to spend the majority of their time outside, fully immersed in the natural environment.
Gateway to Letchworth State Park: Guests are just a short distance from the countless miles of hiking trails, whitewater rafting, kayaking, hot air ballooning, and the spectacular gorge overlooks that define Letchworth State Park.
Important Considerations for Guests:
Potential renters should be aware that these are rustic cabins in a natural park setting. Critter encounters, such as mice, have been noted by previous guests. The cabins are described as 'barely' maintained in some accounts, emphasizing their truly rustic nature. Furthermore, the ground and site conditions around the cabins themselves have been noted as very rough and potentially not ADA-safe, though the communal bathrooms are ADA compliant. Linens, bedding, and cookware are not provided, and pets are generally NOT allowed in Cabin Area D, making it crucial to confirm all rules and restrictions with the park office prior to booking.
Contact Information
The D Cabins are an accommodation option within the larger Letchworth State Park system. The primary contacts for all information, reservations, and general inquiries are:
Address (Mailing/General Park Office): 1 Letchworth State Park Castile, NY 14427-1124
Phone Number (Park Information): (585) 493-3600
Reservations (Campsites & Cabins): Bookings are typically made through the NYS Cabin/Camping Reservation System. Call 1-800-456-2267 or visit the Reserve America website.
Check-In Location: All A, B, D, and E Cabin renters must check in at the Main Visitor Center, located near the South end of the Park.
Conclusion: Why Letchworth D Cabins are Suitable for New York Locals
For residents across New York, the Letchworth D Cabins offer a compelling and authentic upstate escape. In a state that boasts incredible urban and coastal attractions, the deep gorge, dramatic waterfalls, and verdant forests of Letchworth State Park represent a vital piece of the state's natural heritage. The D Cabins, in particular, provide a secluded and peaceful retreat away from the more crowded areas of the park. They serve as a perfect, rustic basecamp—your personal 'log cabin tent'—that provides shelter and basic power without disconnecting you from the wilderness. It's a place where you can enjoy the simplicity of a campfire under the stars and wake up ready to tackle 66 miles of hiking trails.
This experience is fundamentally about quality time outdoors. While the rustic conditions and lack of luxury amenities are part of the authenticity, the convenience of a small fridge and electric stove, coupled with access to clean, modern showers, means you are truly camping in comfort. For locals seeking a genuinely unplugged adventure, an affordable alternative to high-end resorts, and a direct connection to the awe-inspiring beauty of the 'Grand Canyon of the East,' the Letchworth D Cabins provide a destination well worth the drive. They are an essential part of the New York State Parks experience, promising tranquility and an unforgettable communion with nature.
There are many cabins at Letchworth Park, and this review only applies to one, cabin D003, a small two-person-log-cabin. The D and E cabins are located on the not so public, much quieter side of the gorge, by the parade grounds. We stayed at the end of September 2020 from Tuesday to Friday morning. We typically tent camp, but I wanted something to get us up off the ground and give us some headroom. So I considered this to be our "log cabin tent." And as you can see, it was only slightly larger then our tent. It came with two cots that could not be put together, so if you are planning on a good time, you better be flexible. The cabin had electricity with plenty of outlets, one overhead light, one porch light, a small electric stove, a fridge, a small table, and two wooden chairs. We had to take out one of the chairs just to get the beds to fit. The site had a fire-ring as apparently fireplaces are out of fashion. There was room for a overhead tarp which we set up to give us more covered outdoor space. The site was very rough and not ADA safe at all. The bathrooms were a treat, very new, with nice showers, and they were ADA compliant so I imagine that some of the cabins are also. The check in is at the Visitors Center. We went nutty trying to figure that out. All in all, it was worth it to rent the cabin. We stayed dry in the heavy overnight rain, if we needed to warm up, we turned on the oven, we didn't need to buy ice for the cooler. And we camp to sit outside by the fire, not sit inside.
Oct 02, 2020 · Michael RileyCabins are full of mice. I understand they are rustic but mice walking around in the room is a straight health hazard. I talked to the park manager and she told me D and E cabins are "barely" maintained and it is normal. I will write to Health department about it. Let's see how normal it is.
May 30, 2024 · YunusSecond time staying in D-1. Love the park and the rustic cabin. This cabin is very private and a short walk to the recently renovated restroom/shower facilities which are well maintained. The cabin has an apartment sized electric range and refrigerator. It also has a usable fireplace and electric heat.
Oct 14, 2016 · RayThe cabins are very rustic, the cots are quite uncomfortable. I wasn't expecting glamping, but holy cow, this place is great if you like being in the outdoors. I was disappointed with the bathrooms. It was a brand-new bathroom/shower facility, and despite seeing the guy check the bathrooms almost daily, it only got cleaned once (and they were pretty rough).
Aug 26, 2022 · Jimmie FriesImagine waking up with the sound of the birds and opening the door and watch the deer walking around. This place is beautiful. The waterfalls and hiking trails are awesome. We camp here for 7 days while visiting the area. The restroom is clean and newly constructed. We brought our own beddings. The cabin has refrigarator and stove. If you love the simple outdoor life then this is the place.
