Introduction / Overview
For New Hampshire residents seeking more than just a weekend getaway, Loon Lake Campground & Function Lodge in Croydon offers a unique and dedicated opportunity for seasonal lakeside living. Nestled in the serene Dartmouth/Lake Sunapee region, this is not a short-term destination, but rather a community built around the commitment to a full summer season of outdoor enjoyment. The campground boasts over 100 sites set against the stunning backdrop of a pristine, 100-acre private lake. The site operates under the management of Modern America Campgrounds, focusing primarily on providing seasonal sites for RV and extended-stay campers looking for a consistent, summer-long 'home away from home' in the Granite State’s beautiful natural environment.
The appeal of Loon Lake Campground & Function Lodge lies in its emphasis on a peaceful, water-centric lifestyle. The private lake is a major draw, being explicitly reserved for non-motorized watercraft, ensuring a quiet, clean, and tranquil environment for swimming, kayaking, and fishing—a rare and treasured find in New Hampshire’s popular lake regions. Beyond the natural beauty, the property is designed to foster a strong sense of community, with a dedicated Function Lodge acting as a central hub for social events and gatherings throughout the season. The overall atmosphere, as many seasoned visitors confirm, is lovely, peaceful, and full of fun activities that make the camping season fly by in a flurry of lakeside memories.
It is important for prospective campers, particularly those who prefer short-term visits, to understand the campground's model: sites are generally sold for the entire season. This focus on seasonal stays cultivates a stable, friendly neighborhood of fellow New Hampshire campers who return year after year. While management and operations have seen changes over time, as noted in recent feedback, the fundamental draw—the crystal-clear, quiet lake and the opportunities for community engagement—remains the core of the Loon Lake experience.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Loon Lake Campground & Function Lodge is highly suitable for New Hampshire locals who view camping as a seasonal lifestyle rather than a quick vacation. For those living within the state, securing a seasonal site here means having a dedicated, dependable summer home just a short drive away, eliminating the constant stress of booking weekend reservations. The campground's seasonal model fosters an environment where long-term friendships are built, and families spend entire summers together, sharing barbecues, beach bonfires, and community dances.
The key draw for New Hampshire residents is the access to a private lake with a no-gas-motor rule. This is a significant premium in the often-crowded New Hampshire Lakes Region, guaranteeing a quiet, safe, and beautiful waterfront experience for swimming and non-motorized boating. While some public feedback highlights organizational and maintenance issues following the corporate change of ownership—specifically concerning management communication, maintenance response (such as potholes and the access gate), and flood-related fee disputes—the underlying value of a dedicated seasonal lakeside community in a prime location remains undeniable for many. Locals who prioritize the peaceful, community-driven, lakeside atmosphere for an entire season, and who are prepared to navigate any potential administrative frustrations, will find Loon Lake Campground & Function Lodge to be a genuinely treasured part of their New Hampshire summer tradition. It offers the stability of a second home with the relaxation of continuous lake access and a built-in social calendar.

We started camping here when it was still owned by a person and not a corporation like it is now. It was a hidden gem and a very special place, but since it has been purchased by Modern America Campgrounds that is no longer the case. Campers whose seasonal sites were flooded the entire season were not given a break on their rates and were instead told if you don’t like it leave. Campers who complained about numerous pot holes were also told the same thing. Management has no issues referring to people as stupid, etc in group emails that all the campers receive. They will also talk negatively about other campers and their boss to you so I’m sure they will talk about you. They will berate those who don’t follow the rules, but then will also refuse to enforce them because it might impact their bottom line (as told to me by one of the local managers who used to be a used car salesman). The campground is in need of repairs with areas falling apart or simply not being addressed like the access gate that hasn’t worked in over a year. Some people will get charged for things that others don’t and again when the local manager is questioned about it you get told that he will do what he wants to. Most sites are 30amp and even all the 50amp sites won’t support two air conditioners running at the same time. Hopefully the dam to the lake gets fixed so that you won’t be able to walk across it like this year.
Oct 22, 2024 · Amy WhitakerLovely place. Visiting parents and they love it there. Peaceful. Quiet. Fun. Lots of opportunity for activities or to spend a quiet night around the fire. The lake is beautiful and campground is kept up nicely.
Jul 29, 2023 · Rosie LadeauAfter unsuccessful and overwhelming wedding and reception venue visitations, a local told us about this hidden gem it was a great experience. The owners are both so kind and down to earth. Our bus driver said they let her hang out with them and chat while she waited for the event. If you're looking for a low-stress venue, this is it.
Oct 04, 2022 · Kelly LehrOur daughter Cassandra/Jeff got married there Aug.29,2020. What a beautiful place, perfect for their "special day". Owner Scott and Sharon were completely amazing and made this day so memorable. They are so easy to talk to and help with anything you need. Would definitely go back and would recommend Loon Lake to all. Thanks again Scott & Sharon Ken, Jessie, Cassandra & Jeff
Sep 11, 2020 · Ken WanteOur first seasonal site and we're so happy we chose this place. Doesn't have all the glitz and glamour of other places but it has turned into our 2nd home and family. We love this place!!
