Lotts Island RV Campground embodies this by focusing on core amenities and providing excellent access to local conveniences. While it may not be a sprawling resort, its emphasis on functionality and its prime location make it a valuable asset for those seeking an unpretentious yet effective camping experience. This article will provide a clear, factual overview of what Lotts Island RV Campground offers, helping you determine if it's the right choice for your next RV adventure in coastal Georgia.

Introduction / Overview

Lotts Island RV Campground is an RV park situated on Lott Island Road in Savannah, Georgia. It operates as part of the MWR (Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) facilities for Hunter Army Airfield, which means its primary clientele includes active duty military personnel, retired veterans, DoD civilians, and 100% disabled veterans. This designation is crucial for prospective visitors to understand, as it influences eligibility for stays and pricing. The campground is well-regarded for being "bare bones" yet highly functional, offering essential hookups on concrete pads. Reviewers often highlight its convenient location, making it an excellent base for exploring Savannah, Pooler, and even further destinations like Hilton Head, SC. While it is not a resort, it provides a quiet environment and accommodates both overnight and longer-term campers, with a noticeable number of long-term residents.

Location and Accessibility

Lotts Island RV Campground is conveniently located on Lott Island Rd, Savannah, GA 31409, USA, in close proximity to Hunter Army Airfield. This location is a significant highlight, offering exceptional accessibility to various local amenities and major regional attractions. Residents appreciate its strategic position for easy commutes to:

  • Savannah and Pooler: Both cities are just a short drive away, providing access to historic sites, cultural events, diverse dining, and abundant shopping opportunities.
  • Hunter Army Airfield: Direct and easy access to base facilities, including the commissary, gym, and exchange, is a major perk for eligible guests.
  • Shopping Centers: Walmart and Target are within walking distance, offering unparalleled convenience for groceries and daily necessities. Other gas stations, restaurants, and shopping centers are also nearby.
  • Regional Hubs: While Atlanta is about a 5-hour drive, the campground's proximity to Hilton Head, SC, makes it a convenient stop for those traveling further up the coast.

Reviewers note the ease of getting in and out, particularly if aware of the specific turn near the Rio gate for larger rigs (suggesting to drive past and turn around for easier access to the sharp turn into the campground). This accessibility makes it a prime spot for exploring all that coastal Georgia has to offer.

Services Offered

Lotts Island RV Campground focuses on providing the fundamental services essential for comfortable RV camping. While it emphasizes functionality over luxury, the core offerings ensure a practical stay:

  • Full Hookups: All RV sites are equipped with essential utilities, including electricity (likely 30-amp and 50-amp), water, and sewer connections. This is a crucial amenity for modern RVs and extended stays.
  • Concrete Pads: The sites feature concrete pads, providing a level and stable surface for RV parking, which is highly appreciated by campers.
  • Picnic Tables and Benches: Each site includes a comfortable picnic table and benches, perfect for outdoor dining and relaxation. Some sites also have brick fire pits, enhancing the camping experience.
  • Big Rig Accommodation: While some larger rigs (40'+ with tow) might need to consider specific spaces like #15 or plan to disconnect, the campground generally accommodates big rigs with level sites and easy access.

It is important to note what is generally not offered, as highlighted by reviews: no playground, no laundry facilities, no restrooms, and no rec room. This reinforces its "bare bones" nature, focusing on providing essential site utilities rather than extensive communal amenities.

Features / Highlights

Despite its "bare bones" description, Lotts Island RV Campground offers several features that make it a compelling choice for its target audience and those seeking a straightforward camping experience:

  • Military Affiliation Benefits: As an MWR facility, it provides preferential access and likely advantageous pricing for active duty military, retirees, DoD civilians, and 100% disabled veterans. This fosters a welcoming environment for those with shared backgrounds.
  • Prime Location for Exploration: Its top highlight is undeniably its location. Being within easy reach of Savannah, Pooler, and even walking distance to major retail stores like Walmart and Target, offers unparalleled convenience for resupply and sightseeing.
  • Quiet and Small Community: Reviewers describe it as quiet and relatively small, which can be a significant advantage for campers seeking a peaceful retreat from larger, busier campgrounds.
  • Functional and Level Sites: The concrete pads and ease of entry/exit into sites are highly valued by RVers, ensuring a stress-free setup and departure.
  • Long-Term Stay Potential: The observation that "quite a few folks stay here long term" suggests it's a suitable and established option for extended stays, offering a stable base for work or leisure in the area.
  • Access to Hunter AAF Amenities: Eligible guests benefit from convenient access to the commissary, gym, and exchange on Hunter Army Airfield, adding significant value to their stay.

While road noise is a factor, the overall convenience, functionality, and military-focused benefits make it a strong contender for its niche.

Promotions or Special Offers

Lotts Island RV Campground, as an MWR facility, typically offers structured pricing that serves as its primary "promotional" benefit, particularly for its eligible clientele. While specific "special offers" beyond these structured rates are not widely advertised, the rates themselves are often very competitive compared to civilian campgrounds:

  • Tiered Daily and Monthly Rates: The pricing is designed to be affordable for military-affiliated individuals, with distinct daily and monthly options. For example, previous information indicated rates around $30/night for eligible military personnel, and monthly rates for full hookup sites at approximately $800.
  • Value for Convenience: The combination of essential full hookups on concrete pads and an extremely convenient location near major retail and military facilities often represents a significant value proposition.

Since the campground is primarily for those with military ties, these advantageous rates are essentially the ongoing promotion. It is always recommended to contact the campground directly for the most current and specific pricing details, eligibility requirements, and any potential availability for non-military guests, as policies can change.

For reservations, inquiries about eligibility, or to confirm availability at Lotts Island RV Campground, you can reach them through the following contact details. Note that management for military campgrounds often falls under the base's Outdoor Recreation (ODR) or MWR department.

Conclusion: Why Lotts Island RV Campground is Suitable for Locals

For Georgians, particularly those with military connections or those simply seeking a highly convenient and functional base for their RV in the Savannah area, Lotts Island RV Campground offers a distinct suitability. Its appeal for locals stems from several key factors:

  • Unbeatable Location for Accessibility: The campground's standout feature is its location. For those needing easy access to Hunter Army Airfield, or simply wanting to be within walking distance of major retailers like Walmart and Target, and a short drive from downtown Savannah and Pooler, this campground is strategically placed. This convenience saves time and enhances the overall experience of living or visiting in an RV.
  • Affordable Long-Term Stays (Especially for Eligible Guests): For military-affiliated locals, the pricing structure provides an incredibly cost-effective option for extended stays, making it a viable alternative to traditional rentals or more expensive civilian RV parks in the region. Even for short stays, the value for its location and basic amenities is clear.
  • Practicality Over Luxury: Many Georgians value functionality and a no-fuss approach. Lotts Island RV Campground delivers on this by providing solid, level concrete pads with full hookups. For those who spend their days exploring Savannah and simply need a reliable place to park their RV at night, this "bare bones" approach is often preferred.
  • Sense of Community (for Military): The focus on military-affiliated guests can foster a strong sense of community and understanding among residents, providing a comfortable and supportive environment for those sharing similar experiences.
  • Gateway to Coastal Georgia: As a convenient base, it allows locals to fully immerse themselves in the rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty of Savannah and the broader coastal Georgia region, from local festivals to exploring the barrier islands.

In summary, Lotts Island RV Campground, while not a resort, offers a highly practical, affordable, and strategically located option for RVers in Georgia. Its focus on essential services and its prime access to key areas make it a suitable and valuable resource for locals seeking a functional and convenient RV experience in the Savannah area.

We spent the past 30 days here and the best detail is its location to Savannah, Pooler and Hilton Head, SC. Atlanta 5 hours. The RV park is also conveniently located near: the mall, gas, restaurants, & shopping centers. Walmart & Target are within walking distance. Hunter AAF is huge and has a commissary, gym and exchange. We had a great time!

This place is exactly what has been described by other reviewers. It’s bare bones but a great place to stay overnight or for a few nights. This is not a resort, is quiet and pretty small. If you have a 40’+ rig with a tow, you may want to request SPACE #15 otherwise, plan to disconnect. The spaces have concrete pads with brick fire pits and comfy tables/benches. From what we could tell, there are quite a few folks that stay here long term, not an issue tho just an observation. We were accommodated same day, end of day - thank you! Oh BTW if you have a big rig, you’ll need to drive past the Rio gate and find a spot to turn around and make your way back as the campground is directly to the left of the Rio gate which is a very sharp turn. FYI no playground, no laundry, no restrooms, no rec room.

No bathroom or laundry, but close to Savanna and each site has pretty good space with shade. The gym and laundry are about 13 mins away on post. There is a road that gets you there without leaving post. The Exchange and Commissary are in that same area. Nice people here but no frills. Fishing 1/2 a mile away at Lotts Island. Walmart is about a mile away. Good location with a decent rate. Enjoy!

Lott Island RV is only for service connected disabled military. It was a nice campground for a quick stay. Full hook ups but no amenities. The camp host does a great job at keeping it clean. My daughter loved walking on "snake trail" that he had just cleared. Thank you

This is a small RV park of 16 sites right off the Rio Gate at Hunter Army Airfield. It's right next to the Savannah Mall, so there is plenty of road noise. The road into the campground is easy to miss. It's literally 100' past the gate on the left. The CG road is dirt and potholed. The sites are grass/dirt although there is a paved pavilion. There is no restroom or bath house. It's currently $25/night.
