Introduction / Overview
Lyman Run Lower Campgrounds provides a fantastic gateway to the rugged beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds, offering a comfortable and well-maintained base camp in the heart of Potter County. Located within the scenic 595-acre Lyman Run State Park, this camping area is one of two loops within the park, specifically designed for those who appreciate modern convenience alongside a true wilderness experience. Surrounded by a mixed northern hardwood forest dominated by maples and cherries, the Lower Campground sits at the southern end of the park, offering a more intimate setting than its larger counterpart.
Managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), this facility caters to a variety of campers, from RV enthusiasts needing electric service to tent campers seeking easy access to amenities. It serves as an ideal staging point for local residents looking to explore the famed dark skies of the nearby region, enjoy the 45-acre Lyman Run Lake, or access the extensive Susquehannock Trail System, including designated ATV trails. The atmosphere is generally quiet, well-kept, and geared toward family-friendly outdoor recreation, making it a reliable choice for your next Pennsylvania State Park adventure.
Location and Accessibility
Lyman Run Lower Campgrounds is situated at 246 Lyman Run Rd, Galeton, PA 16922, USA. This address places it squarely in the scenic heart of Potter County, often referred to as the “Black Forest” region of the Pennsylvania Wilds. The park's central location makes it highly accessible for residents coming from various parts of Pennsylvania, primarily via scenic U.S. Route 6 and local State Forest roads.
As part of a State Park, the main roads leading to the campground are typically well-maintained. The Lower Campground loop itself is positioned away from the main park beach area, contributing to its reputation as a quieter retreat. Its location is strategically advantageous for several key local activities:
Proximity to Galeton: The nearby town of Galeton provides essential services, including groceries and other supplies, making resupply runs convenient.
Cherry Springs Access: It is an incredibly popular alternative base for visitors wishing to experience the world-renowned dark skies of Cherry Springs State Park, which is a short, manageable drive away.
Trail Access: The park provides access to the Susquehannock Trail System for hiking, and the Lower Campground specifically offers convenient access for ATV enthusiasts during the designated season, providing a trail head to the Susquehannock ATV Trail system.
The campground operates seasonally, generally from mid-April through mid-December, aligning with the traditional Pennsylvania camping and recreation seasons.
Services Offered
The Lower Campground is categorized as a modern facility by the DCNR, meaning it offers more extensive services than primitive or rustic campsites. These features are designed to enhance comfort and convenience for both tent and RV campers, ensuring a hassle-free stay for local families and visitors.
Key services available at Lyman Run Lower Campgrounds include:
Modern Electric Campsites: All twelve of the RV-friendly sites in the Lower Campground offer 50-amp electric connections, accommodating RVs and trailers up to 40 feet in length.
Flush Toilets and Hot Showers: Modern, clean restroom facilities are available, which include hot showers, a welcome amenity particularly for those visiting from rustic locations like Cherry Springs, where the showers operate on an honor system for a small fee.
Sanitary Dump Station: A crucial convenience for RV and trailer owners, a sanitary dump station is conveniently located within the Lower Campground loop.
Waste Disposal: A dumpster is provided within the campground loop for the disposal of trash and rubbish, contributing to the "very well-maintained" environment praised by campers.
Individual Site Furnishings: Each individual campsite is equipped with essential outdoor furniture, including a picnic table, a fire ring for campfires, and a lantern hanger.
Pet-Friendly Sites: All sites within the Lower Campground loop are designated as pet-friendly, allowing Pennsylvania pet owners to bring their furry companions along for the adventure.
Seasonal Operations: The campground operates reliably from mid-April (coinciding with the start of trout season) until mid-December.
Features / Highlights
Lyman Run State Park, and the Lower Campground specifically, is rich with features that appeal directly to the Pennsylvania outdoor enthusiast, combining natural beauty with diverse recreational opportunities.
Highlights of the camping experience include:
Gateway to Dark Skies: Its close proximity to Cherry Springs State Park, a Gold-Level International Dark Sky Park, is a massive draw. The campground is often used as a convenient and comfortable base camp, providing the modern amenities like showers and electricity that are not available at Cherry Springs.
Lyman Run Lake Recreation: The 45-acre lake is a central feature, offering excellent year-round activities. It is regularly stocked with rainbow and palomino trout by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, making it a prime fishing spot. Boating (electric motors only) and swimming at the sandy beach (seasonal) are also popular.
ATV Riding Access: The Lower Campground provides a unique advantage by offering convenient access to the Susquehannock ATV Trail system, specifically during the designated season (typically Memorial Day weekend to the last Sunday in September), catering to a dedicated segment of the local outdoor community.
Immaculate Maintenance: Consistently high marks from campers highlight the cleanliness of the facilities, noting that the restrooms, shower areas, and overall campground loops are very well-maintained and "clean," ensuring a pleasant stay.
Quiet and Secluded Atmosphere: Being the smaller of the park's two campgrounds and set slightly away from the main beach area, the Lower Campground loop generally offers a quieter and more secluded camping environment.

Stayed at Cherry Springs the night before came here for the showers. Showers cost $4. It's done on an honor system. Only one shower per restroom. Stayed mid-May so I didn't have any trouble getting in, but I could see it being difficult when it's really packed. Restrooms and shower areas were very clean.
May 19, 2025 · Michael YorkVery well-maintained campground. Bathrooms were clean. A dumpster is available in the campground loop.
Aug 04, 2025 · NicholeClean well lit bathrooms, nice camp sites , well spaced out, each with a fire ring and picnic tables
Jun 02, 2025 · David MontagueNice camp grounds with a very nice bath/shower facility, the showers were very hot and had good water pressure. You have to keep hitting a button to keep the water on, which was a little annoying. The park, camp grounds and shower facilities were very clean and well maintained. They use a composting method for waste, so no water or chemicals are used, no bad smells like you might think. Some of the sites are up in the woods a little ways, which makes for some very nice and private spaces. The lower lot is pet friendly.
Jun 13, 2023 · Joshua Quinnwarm and clean restroom. hot shower is available for free for campers. also dark enough for stargazing. Need to check your reservation location ahead, it will be hard to spot the number under the dark sky. has a fireplace but no wood provided
