Muskrat Lake State Forest Campground About

Michigan is a state blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, from its vast forests to its countless lakes. For those who yearn for a simpler, more authentic camping experience, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, the state forest campgrounds offer an ideal solution. Muskrat Lake State Forest Campground in Lewiston is one such gem, providing a rustic and serene environment that appeals to a diverse range of outdoor enthusiasts, especially those who appreciate the quiet of nature and the thrill of off-road adventures.

Introduction / Overview

Muskrat Lake State Forest Campground is a small, secluded rustic campground nestled along the western shoreline of Muskrat Lake. It's designed for campers who prefer minimal amenities and a deep connection with the natural world. With only 12 to 13 sites available, it offers a sense of privacy and solitude that larger, more developed campgrounds often lack. One reviewer beautifully captured this essence, noting the "Swans trumpeting in the morning sunrise, very peaceful," and looking forward to "seeing the night sky later this week." This speaks to the campground's primary appeal: a tranquil setting for relaxation and contemplation.

However, the campground also caters to a different kind of adventurer. It's explicitly an "ORV campground," meaning it offers direct access to off-road vehicle trails. This dual nature can lead to varied experiences, as some campers appreciate the quiet while others enjoy the motorized recreation. While recent logging in the adjacent area has impacted the forest landscape, leading to "a desolate field" and heavier winds, the core experience remains focused on the lake and the trails. Despite some concerns about noise from ORVs, particularly during peak times, the campground remains a draw for those seeking both peaceful moments and active outdoor pursuits. Visitors have also reported sightings of local wildlife, including "porcupine and turkeys," adding to the natural allure.

Location and Accessibility

Muskrat Lake State Forest Campground is situated in Lewiston, MI 49756, USA. More precisely, it is located 12 miles northwest of Mio via M-33 North, West Miller Road, Richardson Road, and Muskrat Lake Road. This places it within Oscoda County, an area renowned for its expansive state forests and recreational opportunities.

Its location on the western shore of Muskrat Lake provides direct water access, making it convenient for those bringing small boats, canoes, or kayaks. The campground's primary access is via roads that lead directly to the sites. While described as rustic, sites can accommodate tents and small trailers, with a few capable of handling units up to 40 feet in length. For ORV enthusiasts, a major highlight is that the Mio ORV Trail directly ends into the campground, providing unparalleled access for riders. This accessibility makes it a practical choice for Michiganders seeking a getaway that blends lakeside relaxation with motorized adventure, all within a reasonable drive from many parts of the Lower Peninsula.

Features / Highlights
  • Peaceful and Secluded Atmosphere: Despite being an ORV-accessible campground, many visitors find it "very peaceful," especially when not at peak ORV traffic times. The small number of sites contributes to a sense of seclusion and privacy.
  • Direct Lake Access: Located right on Muskrat Lake, the campground offers excellent opportunities for paddlesports (canoeing, kayaking), swimming, and pan fishing. The shallow, warm waters of the lake are inviting for various water activities.
  • ORV Trailhead: For motorized recreation enthusiasts, direct access to the Mio ORV Trail is a major highlight, making it incredibly convenient to ride right from your campsite.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The natural setting provides opportunities to observe local wildlife, with porcupines and turkeys being commonly sighted. The trumpeting swans mentioned in a review highlight the rich birdlife.
  • Dark Skies: For stargazers, the remote location offers a chance to "seeing the night sky" with minimal light pollution, providing a stunning celestial display.
  • First-Come, First-Served Basis: All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning no reservations are needed. This offers flexibility for spontaneous trips, though it can mean uncertainty during busy periods.
  • Affordable Camping: As a state forest campground, the site fees are typically very affordable, making it a budget-friendly option for extended stays or frequent visits.
  • Variety of Fishing: While noted as a shallow lake, Muskrat Lake offers good pan fishing for bass, bluegill, and pike. Nearby, the Au Sable River (six miles south) and East Branch Big Creek (five miles northwest) provide additional fishing opportunities, including trout.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a Michigan State Forest Campground, Muskrat Lake State Forest Campground operates under the standardized fee structure of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). These campgrounds are not typically run with commercial "promotions" in the traditional sense, but rather offer consistent, affordable rates that are a value in themselves.

  • Standard Daily Fee: Sites are available for a fixed daily rate, typically around $13 per night. This flat fee makes budgeting for a trip straightforward.
  • First-Come, First-Served: A key "feature" that acts like a promotion for flexibility is that all sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means no reservation fees and the ability to arrive without prior booking, which is ideal for spontaneous Michigan adventurers.
  • Michigan Recreation Passport: For Michigan residents, purchasing an annual Recreation Passport when renewing your vehicle registration provides unlimited access to all state parks and state forest campgrounds for a single yearly fee. This is a significant cost-saving for frequent campers and outdoors enthusiasts.
  • Seasonality: While the campground is open year-round, amenities like water pumps may be shut off during freezing temperatures. However, camping fees typically remain consistent.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on fees, any temporary closures, or changes to facilities, it is always best to consult the official Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website or contact the managing unit directly.

A beautiful, small rustic campground- only 13 sites but I was the only one here. Swans trumpeting in the morning sunrise, very peaceful. Looking forward to seeing the night sky later this week after these clouds pass thru.

So it’s a decent campground but can barely call it a forest anymore. They logged the whole area across the street and now it’s just a desolate field. Wind comes across very heavy now. Beware of random bikes and sxs’s at all times of the night. They’re loud on purpose. Yes i know this is an orv campground. Seen lots of porcupine and turkeys.

This campground was great until the clearcut the woods around it for miles. Looks like you're in some desolate war zone now, and if it's windy it's VERY windy since there are no trees.
