New River Gorge Campground About

For West Virginians looking to dive headfirst into the heart of outdoor adventure, the New River Gorge area is an undisputed gem. Among the many options for lodging, the New River Gorge Campground in Lansing offers itself as a potential basecamp for exploring this iconic region. While some past visitors have shared mixed experiences regarding its upkeep and facilities, the campground's significant advantage lies in its unbeatable location, placing you incredibly close to some of the state's most thrilling activities and natural wonders.

This campground positions itself as a family-friendly destination, aiming to provide nature's beauty with some of the comforts of home. With over 30 years of experience, the management strives to meet expectations, particularly for RV and tent campers seeking convenience and accessibility to the vast recreational opportunities that the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve offers. It’s important to manage expectations, especially regarding the on-site amenities, as user reviews indicate that some advertised features, like a shop, may not be currently available or as depicted in older materials. However, if your priority is a prime location for launching your adventures, this campground might just fit the bill.

Location and Accessibility

The New River Gorge Campground is conveniently located at 632 Milroy Grose Rd, Lansing, WV 25862, USA. This address places it squarely within the vibrant New River Gorge region, an area synonymous with outdoor recreation in West Virginia. Its proximity to the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve is a major draw, offering campers direct access to a plethora of activities.

Lansing itself is a small community known as a gateway to the New River Gorge, with Fayetteville, a popular town for outdoor enthusiasts, just a short drive away. This means that while you might be nestled in a more rustic setting at the campground, supplies, dining options, and additional attractions are easily reachable by car.

Accessibility to the campground involves navigating local roads. While general access to the New River Gorge area is straightforward via major highways like Route 19 and I-64, visitors should be prepared for local roads that may be winding or less developed as they approach specific outdoor sites. User feedback suggests that the campground's internal layout can be confusing, and sites might be uneven, so travelers, especially those with larger RVs, should approach with caution and perhaps contact the campground directly for specific guidance on site suitability. Despite these potential navigational quirks, the core benefit remains its strategic placement near the heart of the New River Gorge's adventure scene.

Features / Highlights

Despite some of the critical feedback regarding amenities, the New River Gorge Campground's primary highlight is undeniably its strategic location and the access it provides to the surrounding natural wonders.

  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Being 100% dog-friendly is a significant highlight for many travelers, allowing them to bring their beloved pets along for their outdoor adventures without extra fees.
  • Proximity to Local Attractions: Beyond the national park, the campground is near other attractions like Babcock State Park (offering swimming, tennis, horse stables, and hiking) and Hawk's Nest State Park (with a mountain-to-river tram and jet boat riding). Additionally, local points of interest like The Salvaged Station, a nearby store featuring unique crafts, add to the local flavor.

It's important for potential visitors to weigh these locational and activity-based highlights against the reported condition of some on-site facilities, as the primary value of this campground appears to stem from its excellent access to the broader New River Gorge experience.

This campground is awful. Sites were very confusing and not very large and very uneven, nothing to do, nobody to talk to when you go there. That is the worst experience ever and DO NOT recommend. I ended up stay at Bear mountain cabins and campground. They thankfully had full hookup and and Large and beautiful sites.

Loved the Antique Shop next to this campground! The campground not crowded and the area is very nice. Not far at all from the main road. Great if you are traveling through or not wanting a big crowd. Still close to Fayetteville and surrounding sites/adventures; but a nice quiet spot that's easy to pull an RV into. It's a win. (Beautiful quilts at the Antique store.)

They have a lot of work to do to make it worth what they charge...Sites are not level, mostly dirt and grass. Water lines are bare pex lines, even in the dirty shower... on-site sewer treatment plant, do drink the water.. we could have stayed at the KOA or another resort for less. Only positive is the location is close to the new river gorge national park. But they're not the only ones...I don't think we'll be returning any time soon...

Not a good place to tent camp. Our site was under a shelter right next to the 4 lane highway. Very noisy all day and night. Could still hear the traffic with ear plugs in. Long term campers there. Appears people live there permanenty. Large utility truck left at 430am and woke us up every day. Shower house was gross and smelled of mildew. Hair all over the sinks. Everything in the shower house needs a good thorough cleaning. We showered elsewhere as it was too gross to use. Location is good, but would not stay there again.
