Oceanside Group Campground About

A Coastal Escape for Your Group: Oceanside Group Campground on Assateague Island

For those in Maryland seeking an unparalleled outdoor adventure, Oceanside Group Campground on Assateague Island offers a distinctive camping experience that brings you closer to nature. Nestled on a barrier island known for its windswept beaches and iconic wild horses, this campground provides a unique setting for organized clubs, family reunions, and any group looking to create lasting memories. It’s a place where the rhythmic sound of the Atlantic Ocean is your lullaby, and the sight of wild ponies grazing near your site is a daily delight. This guide will walk you through what makes Oceanside Group Campground an exceptional choice for your next group getaway.

Location and Accessibility: Your Path to Island Paradise

Oceanside Group Campground is strategically located within the stunning Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland. This prime location places your group within easy reach of both the expansive ocean beaches and the tranquil bayside waters.

The physical address is 6633 Bayberry Dr, Berlin, MD 21811, USA. Accessing the campground is straightforward, typically involving a drive east on US Route 50 to MD Route 611 South, then over the Verrazano Bridge. Upon entering the national seashore, you'll find the campground just north of the Oceanside Drive-in Campground.

It's important to note that while the campground offers a beautiful beachside experience, the campsites themselves are situated on a sand beach, which can make moving gear a bit challenging. Campers should be prepared for a walk of 100-200 feet from the centralized parking area to their tent-only sites. However, the reward is an immersive natural environment that truly sets this campground apart.

Services Offered: What to Expect During Your Stay

  • Tent-Only Group Sites: Oceanside Group Campground specializes in accommodating organized clubs and affiliated groups with dedicated tent-only campsites. These sites are designed for group use, providing ample space for multiple tents.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings with Grills: Each group site is equipped with several picnic tables and fire rings, complete with grills. This allows for comfortable group dining and the classic campfire experience under the stars.
  • Year-Round Operation for Group Camping: Unlike some other campground options on Assateague, Oceanside Group Campground is open year-round for group camping, though reservations are required from March 15 through November 15 and are highly recommended year-round due to high demand.
  • Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities in the form of vault toilets are available year-round.
  • Seasonal Cold Water Showers: From mid-March through mid-November, campers have access to cold water showers, providing a refreshing way to rinse off after a day at the beach.

  • Trash/Recycling Collection: The campground offers year-round trash and recycling services, encouraging responsible waste disposal.
  • Food Storage Lockers: To help protect your food from the island's inquisitive wildlife, including the wild horses and other critters, food storage lockers are available year-round. This is a crucial amenity for securing your provisions.
  • Camp Store (Seasonal): A camp store is available seasonally, offering basic supplies, ice, and locally purchased firewood.
  • Firewood for Sale (Seasonal): Firewood is available for purchase on-site seasonally. It's important to note that campers are not permitted to bring firewood from out of state; all firewood must be purchased locally.
  • Dump Station (Year-Round): For those with RVs (though group sites are tent-only, other areas of Assateague accommodate RVs), a dump station is available year-round.
  • Staff On Site (Seasonal): During peak seasons, staff are on-site to assist campers and ensure a smooth experience.

Features / Highlights: Why Oceanside Group Campground Shines

  • Wild Horses: One of the most iconic features of Assateague Island is its resident population of wild horses. Encountering these majestic animals roaming freely near your campsite is an unforgettable experience, though it's crucial to maintain a safe distance (at least 40 feet) and never feed them.
  • Oceanfront Access: While the group campsites are set back from the immediate shoreline, they offer excellent access to the vast stretches of Assateague's pristine ocean beaches. The sound of the waves is a constant, soothing presence.
  • Stargazing Opportunities: With minimal light pollution, the night sky over Assateague Island is truly spectacular. Group campers can enjoy incredible stargazing opportunities, often with clear views of the Milky Way.
  • Nature Immersion: The campground provides an unparalleled opportunity to immerse your group in a unique coastal ecosystem, complete with sand dunes, salt marshes, and a diverse array of wildlife beyond just the horses.
  • Community Vibe for Groups: The group camping setup fosters a strong sense of community, perfect for scouting troops, school groups, church retreats, or large family gatherings.
  • Scenic Views: Even though the campsite is on a sand beach, the surrounding natural beauty, especially at night with the stars, is breathtaking.
  • Proximity to Activities: Beyond camping, Assateague Island offers numerous activities such as swimming, beachcombing, fishing, crabbing, kayaking, and hiking on nearby trails.

It's hard to move things to the camp site since it's on a sand beach, but the view is beautiful at night. You will need to careful about food restoration. It'd be better to put it under the table and make sure it's secure. The wild horses are not the only one wants to taste you food.
