Location and Accessibility

Oceanside Walk-In Campground is ideally situated in Berlin, MD 21811, USA. This places it directly on Assateague Island, a barrier island renowned for its stunning beaches and, most famously, its wild horses. While the general address is Berlin, MD, it's crucial for locals to understand that the campground is specifically located within Assateague Island National Seashore, on the Maryland side.

Accessibility is generally straightforward via US-50 East towards Ocean City, then taking MD-611 South (Stephen Decatur Highway) to Assateague Island. Once on the island, the campground is clearly marked. Being a "walk-in" campground means that vehicles are parked in a designated lot, and campers then walk their gear to their individual sites. This design enhances the natural, serene atmosphere by minimizing vehicular traffic within the camping areas. This type of access, while requiring a bit more effort, contributes significantly to the peaceful and immersive experience that draws campers back year after year. The proximity to Ocean City means easy access to amenities and attractions if desired, while still offering the secluded natural beauty of Assateague. This balance makes it incredibly convenient for Maryland residents looking for a true escape without an arduous journey.

The focus is on providing public access to natural resources at a reasonable fee rather than offering discounts.

However, there are ways for Maryland locals to potentially save on entry fees for the National Seashore, which would indirectly act as a cost-saving "promotion":

  • Annual Passes: If you plan to visit Assateague Island National Seashore multiple times within a year, an Assateague Island Annual Pass or an America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Annual Pass (which covers entrance fees at all national parks and federal recreation sites) can offer significant savings. Loved this campground. I stayed at site 68, it is a short walk from the parking area to the site. There were some ticks, but the flying pests weren't bad Unfortunately we didn't see any horses on the beach or around the campground. The only horses we spotted were right at the entrance in the marsh. Beautiful beach.

We loved camping along the beach with the horses walking through the campsite. Watch out for goathead burrs. Our poor dogs were loaded with them before we realized the burrs were everywhere.

We camped here a couple of nights and very much enjoyed everything. The site was nice and provided a picnic table and fire pit. There were 2 toilets, showers and water pump. The beach is quiet and didn't have tons of people there like at other beaches. It's a nice place to take your family and pets. Just gotta watch out for horses entering the camp site.

I drove by looking for wild horses. It seems like this area is where they hang out. Unfortunately I didn't see any, but I didn't realized people camp in tents here!! Not just in RV. Great idea!! There are very roomy restrooms in each area. Note, the toilets are not flushable. Just a toilet with a huge hole. I'm posting a picture I look by the beach to give you an idea how the toilets look.
