Introduction / Overview
Patten Pond Campground, officially known as Patten Pond Camping Resort, is a premier camping destination in the heart of the DownEast region, offering Maine locals and visitors a high-quality, amenity-rich vacation experience. Located right on the shores of the massive, 749-acre body of water confusingly called Patten Pond (truly a lake!), this resort provides spectacular water views and direct access to swimming, boating, and fishing. Operating as part of the Thousand Trails network, the campground is well-regarded for its friendly and helpful staff, clean facilities, and its impressive array of site options—from spacious pull-thru RV spots with full hookups to rustic cabins and comfortable cottages.
The resort strikes a perfect balance: it feels like a peaceful, natural escape with a private beach and quiet pond frontage, yet it pulses with a lively calendar of family-friendly activities. Whether you are looking for a weekend retreat or a seasonal stay, Patten Pond Campground offers an outstanding Maine camping trip, with the added benefit of thoughtful services like not charging for package pick-ups, a small detail greatly appreciated by its long-term and Thousand Trails guests.
Location and Accessibility
The location of Patten Pond Campground at 1470 Bucksport Rd, Ellsworth, ME 04605, USA, is one of its greatest assets, offering unmatched convenience to the best of coastal and inland Maine attractions. Ellsworth itself is known as the "Gateway to DownEast Maine," providing quick and easy access to essential shopping, dining, and regional landmarks.
For Maine residents looking for a strategic basecamp, the accessibility is excellent, allowing for day trips with minimal stress:
Ellsworth Hub: The campground is only about 15 minutes from the central part of Ellsworth, making all necessities—grocery stores, hardware stores, and general shopping—quickly reachable for stocking up.
Acadia National Park: A short drive, approximately 30 to 40 minutes, places guests conveniently near the entrance of one of the country's most famous national parks, allowing for multiple visits and hikes without the hassle of staying closer to the 'madness' of the park entrance areas.
Bar Harbor: Located about 30 minutes away, offering easy access to the historic streets, shopping, and dining of this iconic coastal town.
Bangor: Accessible in about the same travel time, providing a convenient route to city amenities, theaters, and more extensive shopping options.
Regional Camp Base: The campground’s position between major towns and national attractions makes it a highly rated and strategic spot for Maine locals who want to explore the Downeast coast, from Bucksport to Mount Desert Island.
Services Offered
Patten Pond Campground is well-equipped with amenities that enhance comfort and entertainment, catering to both short-term visitors and seasonal guests:
Comprehensive Campsite Hookups: Offers a wide variety of sites including spacious pull-thrus and wooded back-ins, with full hookups including 30-amp and 50-amp electric, water, sewer connections, and cable hookup on many sites.
Diverse Lodging Options: Provides several rental options beyond traditional camping, including rustic cabins (no kitchen/bath but with electricity/fridge/microwave), comfortable cottages (some with full kitchens and baths), and RV model rentals.
Waterfront Facilities: Features a peaceful, private beach area, boat docks and a marina, plus on-site rentals for boats, canoes, kayaks, and pedal carts for enjoying the 749-acre pond.
On-Site Convenience: Includes a well-stocked resort store for essentials like ice, firewood, and propane, as well as a full laundry facility and clean bathhouses.
Package Handling Service: A highly praised service where the campground accepts mail and package deliveries for guests at no charge—a significant benefit for long-term campers.
Recreational Facilities: Offers a game room/billiards, a playground for children, basketball and volleyball courts, and a horseshoes field.
Community Building: Features a clubhouse/pavilion area and planned activities like pancake breakfasts, ice cream socials, community potlucks, and bingo.
Features / Highlights
Patten Pond Campground's biggest draw is the quality of its location and the value it provides to its guests, creating a memorable Maine vacation experience:
Majestic Pond Views and Beach: The large, beautiful pond offers a stunning natural setting. A major highlight is visiting the beachfront at night for a truly "majestic" experience. Guests can watch loons and enjoy a peaceful, private beach.
Abundant Water Activities: The 749-acre pond is an ideal setting for fishing (with plenty of pickerel reported), swimming, and all forms of non-motorized and motorized boating, with rentals conveniently available on-site.
Exceptional Staff Service: Consistently highlighted in customer feedback, the staff is described as very friendly, helpful, and accommodating, going above and beyond—even moving friends to adjacent sites to enhance the family experience.
Family-Focused Programming: The resort maintains a lively activities schedule, including organized events like bingo and planned entertainment, ensuring that there is "a lot there for kids to do" throughout the weekend.
The Ellsworth Advantage: Its close proximity to Ellsworth means campers have immediate access to necessary supplies and dining, a significant convenience when traveling with families or large groups.
High Standards of Cleanliness: The campground is repeatedly described as very clean and well-kept up throughout, including the bathhouses, contributing to a comfortable stay.

The staff is very friendly and helpful. My kids loved the bingo and the kayak rentals. I also LOVE that this campground does not charge for package pick ups..... Something I sadly see a lot of Thousand Trails campgrounds are starting to do. Thank you for offering this service included in our stay. We appreciate it. My biggest tip: Visit the pond beachfront at night, it is majestic!!!
Sep 14, 2025 · AndreaMy wife and I stayed here for labor day weekend. This place is great. Staff is friendly and helpful. Our site was plenty roomy and shaded. They had stuff going on throughout the weekend which was nice. The pond is beautiful and there is a lot there for kids to do. Very clean and kept up throughout the campground. The lady that checked us in was amazing and she moved friends that were staying there with us to the site right across from us so that was great. The location is awesome. 15 minutes from everything in Ellsworth. 30 minutes from Bar Harbor and about the same to Bangor. We will definitely go back.
Sep 01, 2025 · Mike RoweIt’s a nice campground more or a family friendly place. Lots going on. So if you’re looking for like those more in nature camp grounds that’s not really the case here. They have events and such so if you wanna just go out and also have things going on it’s a decent spot. Good amount of space at the camp site. Probably one of the better spots you’ll find near Acadia. Has a nice store with common things you can buy. Also the restrooms probably one of the best you can get at a camp ground. Private showers and standard restrooms with stalls. And a place to do laundry. People can be up late here though. The mornings are pretty quiet. Dogs can’t swim where people are but can off to the side.
Aug 04, 2025 · Justin NealFirst year as a seasonal and so far it has been amazing. Fred and Deb are amazing along with the other staff. Have seen reviews were they placed Patten Pond as not kid friendly. Well far from true. Seasonal campers and other campers are very friendly and the kids that are seasonals are very respectful. Great family atmosphere. Great entertainment on weekend. Very quiet and very relaxing. Would definity recommend Patton Pond
Aug 05, 2025 · Joe WhiteOverall, we enjoyed place. Cleanest porta-potty down by water. Good area for kids to swim, separate from boaters. Staff was good. Some activities for kids, which we appreciate. Rocks all over property proved to be huge obstacles for a lot drivers with less experience, but personally doesnt make place less fun and appealing. Golf cart rentals would make this a 5 star as its a little hike up to trash and activity hut.
