For Mainers and visitors seeking the ideal balance between a traditional outdoor camping experience and convenient access to a bustling city, Paul Bunyan Campground in Bangor, Maine, stands out as a premier destination. Named for the legendary lumberjack figure whose statue proudly resides in Bangor, this campground embodies the spirit of Maine's deep-rooted connection to the outdoors, while being strategically located for modern convenience. It’s an ideal spot for anyone looking to set up a base camp for exploring the beautiful Maine Highlands, the dramatic Down East coast, or simply enjoying a relaxing weekend close to home.
Operating typically from May 1st through October 15th, Paul Bunyan Campground welcomes every type of camper. Whether you arrive in a large motorhome, a fifth-wheel trailer, or prefer the simplicity of a tent, the grounds are set up to accommodate your needs. The property features approximately 88 sites that offer a peaceful mix of sunny, open spots and shaded areas, all nestled on a gently rolling, well-maintained terrain. The owners, Dennis and Amy Hachey, pride themselves on fostering a friendly, family-oriented atmosphere, which is frequently highlighted in local reviews. Campers often praise the spacious, level sites that are "not stacked on top of each other," contributing to a sense of privacy and comfort that enhances the overall stay. This commitment to a welcoming environment is what makes many guests—especially those with local ties, such as being close to grandchildren—become repeat visitors.
However, as a true in-city campground, prospective campers should be aware of a practical reality noted by some guests: the proximity to the Bangor International Airport (BGR). As one reviewer pointed out, the campground "can be loud" due to planes taking off frequently. While this may not bother heavy sleepers or those planning to be out exploring during the day, it is a factual trade-off for the park's exceptional in-city convenience and accessibility.
The unparalleled accessibility of Paul Bunyan Campground is arguably its greatest asset for both Mainers and regional travelers. Located at:
1858 Union St, Bangor, ME 04401, USA
The campground holds the distinction of being Bangor's only campground situated within the city limits. This location on Union Street provides immediate access to all of Bangor's amenities and local attractions.
For the local Maine user, the convenience is clear:
Paul Bunyan Campground is fully equipped to cater to the needs of modern RV and tent campers, focusing on clean, well-maintained facilities and convenient utility options.
The true appeal of Paul Bunyan Campground, especially for Mainers looking for a staycation or a recurring family gathering spot, lies in its engaging amenities and community-oriented activities.

Paul Bunyan Campground is perfectly suited for local Maine residents as a convenient, amenity-rich escape that doesn't require a long drive into the remote wilderness. For families in the greater Bangor region, it offers a hassle-free, "close-to-home" vacation spot—a place where you can easily pop in to see local family (as noted by a happy returning customer) while still enjoying the full camping experience. The combination of a friendly, accommodating staff, meticulously clean facilities, and the high concentration of engaging activities makes it a compelling choice for multi-generational families.
While the airport noise is a known characteristic, the trade-off is significant: instant access to Bangor’s best features—including the Cross Insurance Center, Hollywood Casino, and the Maine Savings Amphitheater. Whether it's serving as a temporary home while visiting relatives, a weekend retreat for attending a concert, or a launching pad for a trip to Acadia, Paul Bunyan Campground provides a high-quality, memorable, and wonderfully convenient camping experience right in the heart of the Queen City. It offers the best of both worlds: a taste of Maine’s famous outdoor lifestyle with the necessary comforts and services of a major regional center.
Firstly, this campground can be loud. There's an airport close by where planes take off frequently. This wasn't a problem for me, but im a heavy sleeper. That being said, this campground was wonderful. Clean, offered activities, communicated well. We spent four nights with tents and had a great time. Will definitely be returning to this location if we decide to take another Maine vacation.

Sep 18, 2025 · Ali KirbyWell kept campground with clean facilities. Convenient location on the edge of Bangor. Quite busy on the weekends with families out for a weekend camping trip. The staff was extremely helpful to us during our stay. Highly recommend this campground if you are traveling through the area.
Aug 14, 2025 · Michele P.Very nice camp ground. It was neat seeing all the aircrafts fly by. Clean place that is well maintained. My son and I will return. Nice finding a relaxing campground that actually has a quiet evening. Prices are VERY reasonable.
Aug 11, 2025 · Darren RobertsMy family and I stayed at this campground for a week in July. Beautiful well kept campground at a great value. Very friendly and helpful staff. The pool was the cleanest I’ve ever been in. Very nice, shaded, mostly level sites for travel trailers/RV’s. New picnic tables and nice fire rings. Well manicured campground with events for kids and adults. We definitely plan on returning next year! Highly recommend.
