Petersburg Campground is a well-established and beloved camping destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Located on the vast and beautiful J. Strom Thurmond Lake, often referred to by locals as Clarks Hill Lake, this campground offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and essential amenities. Its unique combination of natural beauty, essential amenities, and a consistently peaceful atmosphere makes it a preferred choice for residents looking for a convenient and rejuvenating outdoor escape within their home state.
Firstly, the campground’s location directly on the vast and beautiful J. Strom Thurmond Lake (Clarks Hill Lake) is a significant draw. For Georgians, having such a pristine and expansive body of water readily accessible means endless opportunities for water-based recreation right on their doorstep. Whether it’s fishing for bass, cruising the lake in a boat, kayaking at sunrise, or simply enjoying a refreshing swim from one of the two designated beaches, the lake provides a perfect backdrop for a variety of activities. This proximity also significantly cuts down on travel time, allowing locals to maximize their leisure hours and make frequent trips without extensive planning.

The provision of essential amenities like electric and water hookups, fire rings, and picnic tables further enhances the convenience, making it suitable for a wide range of camping styles, from rustic tent camping to comfortable RV stays. The spacious and level sites are particularly appreciated, simplifying the setup process and providing ample room for enjoyment.
Furthermore, the availability of diverse activities, beyond just lakeside enjoyment, adds another layer of appeal for locals. The "great access point for the bike trails" encourages active exploration of the surrounding natural landscape, catering to cycling enthusiasts and those who enjoy hiking. This variety ensures that there's always something to do, whether you're seeking adventure or simply quiet contemplation.
Finally, as a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campground, Petersburg generally offers good value for money, and eligible locals can often benefit from federal passes that provide discounts on camping fees. This commitment to maintaining public recreational spaces, coupled with their inherent beauty and utility, makes Petersburg Campground a cherished resource for the Georgia community. It's a place where lasting memories are made, friendships are fostered, and the natural splendor of Georgia can be truly appreciated, making it a perfect retreat for residents year after year.

Nice size site (7A) mostly level pad with a great view of the lake. Directly across from the bathhouse. The Bathhouse is old and outdated BUT everything was functional and cleaned. We regrettably only stayed two nights. Would have loved to stay longer.
Sep 24, 2024 · VJ SiehlWe enjoyed our short stay at this campground. The sites are large, the trees are tall, the sunsets are beautiful. Our site was right on the water, so peaceful and restful. The nights were quiet, the days were peaceful but for some boat noise in the distance. This was a great access point for the bike trails which we thoroughly enjoyed!
Feb 27, 2024 · AdvencharestsThis is a very nice place to camp. The staff Mr Bill and Christy are the best! Please don’t let them go anywhere. They are the best campground attendants that Petersburg has seen since Don and Margaret Ward. Bill and Christy are very friendly and very knowledgeable about the area and the rules. They go above and beyond to see that there gust have a positive and fun stay at Petersburg.
Sep 21, 2024 · Greg AbercrombieWe come here often and stayed here after getting kicked off the blue ridge parkway due to hurricane Helene. We were one of six sites that were here for the storm. No one was injured but that beautiful park is a mess. Camp hosts Kevin and Amy lost their trailer when destroyed by a pine tree but thankfully they were in the other end. Very nice people and a pleasure to meet them. We've left 5 star ratings in the past but this time it's for the rangers, park service and volunteers that wasted no time checking on us and cutting us a pathway out, even before there was gas or a place to go to. These are pictures of the road in the first loop, the host's trailer and the boat ramp. I couldn't get through to the rest of the park. They've got a big job ahead of them but It was a five star park before the storm and it'll be a five star park when they're done.
Feb 07, 2025 · Florida SailorThe spot we stayed had a continual water running a cross it and when we got there the first day, I had to setup with muddie and water puddle on the spot. Even before all the rain, after the rain I kept thinking I had a leak from my RV. Also we have a class A RV and even coming down the main road if I stayed on my side of the road the tree branches hug across the road scraped against the RV. Also not their fault but the other guests that stay there are not friendly at all. Another thing to note they close the gate at 10pm open at 7am ( they will open it for emergency). So if you need to get out before 7 for work, you will need to park outside the gate. It's a good walk especially before day light. The park is beautiful and I would stay there again.
