For those of us in Oklahoma who cherish the beauty of our state's natural landscapes and are always on the lookout for a peaceful, well-equipped camping spot, Potato Hills Central Campground in Clayton, OK, is a true gem. Nestled near the stunning Sardis Lake, this campground offers a serene escape, blending picturesque lakeside views with convenient amenities. It’s a destination that has pleasantly surprised many, providing a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature, enjoy water activities, and create lasting family memories, all without breaking the bank.
Visitors consistently praise the campground for its "really nice" and "very picturesque location with beautiful lakeside pitches." One family "couldn't find any pictures of a playground" online but was "so glad we stopped" to discover an "awesome playground, clean, and simple walk to the water." The added bonus of "Free entry too" makes it an even more attractive option for budget-conscious adventurers. While one detailed review noted an abundance of bugs in the bathroom/shower area, the overall sentiment remains overwhelmingly positive, with campers eagerly looking forward to returning. Potato Hills Central Campground truly encapsulates the quiet beauty and welcoming spirit of Oklahoma's outdoor offerings.
Potato Hills Central Campground is located directly off OK-2, in Clayton, OK 74536, USA. This prime location places it right on the shores of Sardis Lake, a sprawling reservoir known for its clear waters and excellent fishing opportunities. Clayton, a town in southeastern Oklahoma, serves as a gateway to this beautiful region, which is characterized by rolling hills (the "Potato Hills") and dense forests.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward, as it sits right off a state highway. This ensures easy navigation for both cars and larger RVs or trailers. Upon arrival, the "Free entry" aspect is a significant advantage, simplifying the check-in process. The campground's layout and its proximity to the lake mean that many pitches offer direct or very easy access to the water's edge. While specific internal roads aren't detailed, the overall impression is one of well-maintained grounds, facilitating easy movement within the campground itself. Its location provides a perfect blend of seclusion and convenience, being far enough from major urban centers to offer true peace, yet accessible enough for a comfortable drive from various parts of Oklahoma.
Given that Potato Hills Central Campground is described as having "Free entry," it operates outside the typical commercial campground model that offers promotions or discounts. The primary "offer" is the free access and use of the well-maintained facilities.
As a publicly managed recreation area (likely by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, though not explicitly stated), any cost savings would come from its inherently free nature. There are no paid services for which promotions would apply. Visitors might, however, find that local businesses in Clayton or surrounding areas offer discounts on fishing supplies, boat rentals, or other recreational gear. It's always a good idea to check with local chambers of commerce or bait shops for any community-wide promotions that might indirectly benefit campers at Potato Hills Central.

It is always advisable to call ahead for current conditions, especially regarding the status of the bathroom/shower facilities or any temporary closures. Given its free nature, reservations are typically not available, and sites are likely on a first-come, first-served basis, so calling can help gauge occupancy during peak times.
Potato Hills Central Campground stands out as an exceptionally suitable destination for Oklahomans looking for an authentic and budget-friendly outdoor experience. Its "Free entry" is a massive draw, making quality lakeside camping accessible to everyone without financial barriers. For families across Oklahoma, this means more frequent and stress-free getaways, especially with the "awesome playground" providing excellent entertainment for children and the "simple walk to the water" ensuring easy access to refreshing lake activities.
The "beautiful lakeside pitches" and the "very picturesque location" near Sardis Lake offer a genuine sense of escape into our state's natural beauty. It's a place where you can unwind, enjoy a campfire under the stars (with convenient honor-system firewood), and simply appreciate the tranquility. While the issue of bugs in the bathroom is noted, the overall cleanliness and functionality of the facilities, coupled with the overwhelming positives, make it a minor concern for most dedicated campers.

It's a testament to the fact that you don't need expensive resorts or far-flung destinations to find peace, beauty, and family fun. For any Oklahoman yearning for a refreshing break by the water, this campground offers a fantastic, free, and memorable experience right in our own beautiful backyard.

Stopped here for a rest with the family. Couldn't find any pictures of a playground, so I took a gamble. So glad we stopped. Awesome playground, clean, and simple walk to the water. Free entry too.
May 04, 2025 · Adina ManshackThis place is really nice! Very picturesque location with beautiful lakeside pitches. Just outside the entrance, there is an honor system firewood sale stack. All the pitches were clean and well maintained with the pitch, a covered concrete table and bench seat, and a fire pit/ grill. The ONLY thing that might be a concern is the bathroom/ shower. It's clean, well maintained, and the water was warm.... but the BUGS! WOW! A lot of bugs which are of course attracted by the lights but still.... even I was grossed out, but my GF and teenage daughter, had they been with me, probably wouldn't have used them! That said, I look forward to coming back here again.
Apr 22, 2024 · Paul Landreth-SmithWe needed a place to rest up after a day of traveling in storms. Was met by a nice young man that greeted us and told us about the area. We had never been there and he was so helpful. It was a pretty place. We plan on going back to see more of the campground.
Apr 22, 2025 · Shari HarrisonNice, open camp areas. Level pads, lots of water access. There is a nice walk-on pier and multiple species of fish (including walleye). They have horse camping with trails and several camp sites with horse stalls. Be warned, tho, the bathrooms have regular sinks and toilets but no water. They don't flush and were FULL of poop.
