Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground, located in McGregor, MN, is just such a place. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Mississippi Headwaters Project, this campground offers a diverse camping experience, particularly appealing to those who love spending time on the water. With its strategic location on Big Sandy Lake and the Sandy River, it’s a hub for fishing, boating, and swimming, while also providing numerous facilities that cater to families. Whether you're planning a weekend fishing trip, a week-long family vacation, or just a relaxing escape to the serene northwoods, Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground provides a welcoming environment. While some aspects might appeal more to specific types of campers, its overall commitment to maintenance and guest services makes it a noteworthy destination for many Minnesotans.
Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground is situated at McGregor, MN 55760, USA. This location places it directly on the shores of Big Sandy Lake and the Sandy River, offering exceptional water access and scenic views. The campground is conveniently located about 13 miles north of McGregor, MN, on State Highway 65. It's divided into a north and south side by the Sandy Lake Dam, each with separate vehicle access roads. For those heading to campsites 1-21, tent sites 1-4, and the south group campsite, follow the "South Entrance" signs (turn right onto 531st Lane, then left on 531st Lane). If you’re destined for campsites 22-49, tent sites 5-8, the north group campsite, or the camper cabin, follow the "North Entrance" signs (turn right onto 537th Lane, then right on 222nd Place). This clear division helps manage traffic and provides defined areas. The park's accessibility by two-wheel drive vehicles along a sealed road makes it easy to reach, and its location ensures quick access to the surrounding forest, water bodies, and the small-town charm of McGregor, which offers dining, golf courses, and various public lands.
Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground boasts an impressive array of services and amenities, going beyond what you might expect from many public campgrounds. This extensive offering caters particularly well to families and those focused on lake activities.

For us Minnesotans, Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground offers a compelling blend of amenities and natural beauty, making it particularly suitable for certain types of local getaways. If your family thrives on lake activities – fishing, boating, and swimming – this campground is an absolute gem. The fantastic boat ramps, ample docks, and even the option to moor your boat right at your site on the south side of the dam are huge draws. The abundance of well-maintained playgrounds, clean modern facilities like flushing toilets, hot showers, and especially the free laundry, make it incredibly comfortable for families with kids. While it might not be the top choice for tent campers seeking deep wilderness solitude and extensive hiking trails (as nearby Savannah Portage State Park offers more of that), it excels as a base for lake-centric fun and family-focused recreation. The friendly staff and educational museum add to the welcoming atmosphere. For those who prioritize convenience, a full suite of amenities, and direct access to Big Sandy Lake for all your water-based adventures, Sandy Lake Recreation Area Campground is a highly recommended Minnesota destination.
Our first camping experience at this campground as seasoned park campers left us with mixed feelings. We stayed at tent site #4, a walk-in site with electricity at the end of a peninsula, offering more seclusion than other sites but not without drawbacks. The journey to our site revealed an overcrowded RV area, which would feel claustrophobic for tent campers. While our site was more private, a nearby fishing access path led to occasional foot traffic. Wildlife was abundant, with bold chipmunks clearly habituated to human presence. At night, frog sounds and early morning boat noise disrupted our sleep, and we faced unexpectedly aggressive mosquitoes at dusk despite using pretreated gear. The campground offers flushing toilets and showers, though their quality falls short compared to other parks we've visited. The lack of on-site firewood was inconvenient, requiring a 10-15 minute drive to purchase some. This campground seems primarily geared towards families and boating/fishing enthusiasts, with several play areas and a small swimming area, but lacks hiking trails which we typically enjoy. Most sites, particularly those south of the dam, are cramped and lack privacy. For tent campers seeking a nature-focused experience with hiking opportunities, this campground falls short. It's better suited for those planning to spend most of their time on the lake or families looking for playground amenities. In conclusion, while the campground has its merits for certain types of campers, it didn't align well with our preferences. We're unlikely to return unless we plan a lake-centric trip in the future.
Jul 21, 2024 · AnthonyThis is a great, well maintained campground with amenities you don't find at the vast majority of public campgrounds. The north side of the dam the sites are better spaced, but still pretty open and close to the road. The south side the spots are much closer together and not much privacy. The pros on the south side are that you're much closer to the showers and at least on the peninsula you can dock your boat right at your camp spot, even overnight. The south boat ramp was one of the best I'd ever seen with free loaner lifejackets available , a washing station at the top of the ramp, and a nice little access road to make backing in mich easier. The north side there are shared docks with lots of space at the north boat launch, and the bathrooms are all vault toilets, but the vault toilets are extremely clean and well lit and vented so they aren't stinky and full of bugs like most vault toilets. The camper cabin was pretty small, but located in a very private spot so it's quiet and peaceful. It is very well maintained and accessible and has two sets of bunk beds, one set with two double beds and one set with three tiers of twin beds (bottom tier is on the ground so it's not super tall). Showers were very clean and well maintained and the shower house even had free laundry for guests. There are free yard games and activities available at the office and the dam and visitor center were pretty cool. Fishing was good even just from the docks. There were several well maintained playgrounds and a beautifully maintained beach for kids to play on. And finally the staff and rangers were excellent, friendly and helpful. You should definitely consider staying here.
Jul 17, 2023 · Michael GallagherReally nice campground and fishing piers. Has a boat launch onto Big Sandy Lake and another for the Sandy River. Historical information about the dam and the Sandy Lake Tragedy. There is a nice fish cleaning house near the lake boat launch and a restroom/shower house. There is also a nice swimming beach and playground available as well.
Oct 01, 2023 · Autumn MolletFantastic state park extremely well managed. The campsites are gorgeous and spacious. Restrooms and showers impeccably clean. Megan was a great help at check-in and answering my questions regarding the area. Laundry facilities were a nice bonus. Minnesota does state parks right. Maybe a slight reduction in price so more Americans can enjoy your gorgeous state.
