It’s a place where you can unwind, connect with nature, and create lasting memories without straying too far from the comforts and conveniences you might need. Let's dive in and explore what makes Soo Locks Campground a gem in the heart of the Upper Peninsula.

Location and Accessibility

One of the most significant advantages of Soo Locks Campground is its prime location. You'll find it at 1001 E Portage Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783, USA. This address puts you right on the banks of the beautiful St. Marys River, which forms the international border with Canada. This means you’re not just camping; you’re experiencing a vital part of the Great Lakes shipping industry firsthand.

The campground is incredibly accessible for travelers from across Michigan and beyond. If you're coming from downstate, a scenic drive north on I-75 will bring you directly to Sault Ste. Marie. Once you take Exit 392 off I-75, simply turn right onto the I-75 Business Spur. Continue to the sixth stop light, turn right onto Easterday Ave., and stay on Easterday until you reach Portage Ave. A right turn onto Portage, and about 600 feet later, you'll see the Soo Locks Campground entrance on your left. Its proximity to the Soo Locks itself is a major draw, allowing campers to walk or bike to the Locks Park and Visitor Center to experience the marvel of engineering up close.

While the campground is within city limits, offering easy access to local amenities like grocery stores, gas stations, and eateries, it still provides that feeling of being away from it all, especially for those coveted waterfront sites. The setting allows for stunning views of the St. Marys River, with freighters often passing by just a few hundred yards from your campsite. This unique combination of urban convenience and natural spectacle is hard to beat.

Features / Highlights

What truly sets Soo Locks Campground apart are its distinct features and highlights that enhance the camping experience, particularly for those interested in the local Sault Ste. Marie attractions and the unique river environment.

  • Unbeatable Freighter Views: This is arguably the biggest draw. Being situated directly on the St. Marys River means you have an unparalleled vantage point to watch massive freighters, tugboats, and other vessels navigate the waterway en route to and from the Soo Locks. Many sites offer direct river views, and even those without direct views can access a common waterfront area to enjoy the spectacle.
  • Proximity to Soo Locks: The campground is just a short distance – about a mile – from the famous Soo Locks Park and Visitor Center. This allows for easy walks or bike rides to observe the engineering marvel up close and learn about its history and operation.
  • High Water Pressure: RVers will appreciate the high water pressure (around 80 lbs) at the sites, though it's recommended to use a regulator to protect your RV's plumbing.
  • Mix of Site Types: The campground offers a variety of site surfaces, including grass, small gravel, and some concrete pads. While some concrete sites might feel more like a parking lot, they still offer convenient hookups. You'll find a mix of back-in and pull-through sites, accommodating different RV sizes.
  • Friendly Staff: Numerous reviews highlight the friendly and helpful nature of the campground staff, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Access to Downtown Sault Ste. Marie: Being within city limits means easy access to local restaurants, shops, and other attractions in downtown Sault Ste. Marie, allowing you to explore the area's rich history and culture.
  • Fishing Opportunities: The St. Marys River is renowned for its fishing, and campers can enjoy this activity directly from the campground or nearby access points.

Campground pricing typically starts around $35 per night, offering a reasonable value for its unique location and amenities. Michigan residents might find that off-peak seasons or longer stays could occasionally come with local incentives, so a direct call is often the best way to uncover any available deals.

Older Campground. You go for the views more than the park itself. Clean and manicured sites. A mixture of grass or small gravel on the sites. Some have concrete but those are more like a parking lot vs a site. They have High water pressure ( 80lbs use regulator). They need to work on WiFi signal to cover park, looks like they’ve tried but the antenna needs some work. Waterfront sites don’t get very good cell phone coverage (Verizon and T-Mobile) either. They allow you to pull into river-sites w RV but utilities will be on opposite side. Honestly I think the upper sites are nice and offer just as nice view. 50 amp on some but not all. They offer a dump station but has water on all sites. Office has game room with pool table and hot coffee served all day. For the money you can’t go wrong

Very behind the times. Email wouldn’t be sent until later that day or they would mail me a confirmation. I’m on the road so that wouldn’t work. Laundry closes way too early. Charges per person over four people. Old buildings.

Our first time at this campground and we loved it! We saw many freighters and a Canadian Snowbirds Airshow. Also, a Canadian fire-suppressing aircraft demonstrated loading and dumping water in the river. The campground used to be a KOA years ago, but is now privately owned . Showers are very clean and everyone is friendly and helpful. Lots are well-maintained and most all have some view of the water. We are planning next year's trip already.

If you need a place to stay in a pinch, this place is good. If you have a clear idea as to where you’d like to reserve your spot in the campground, I highly recommend that you be as clear as possible when making a reservation over the phone. I told the woman who picked up we wanted to be on the water and be able to see all the ships that pass by. She said ok and that she’d get us the best site available. She led me to believe we would have what we asked for. She was not transparent about there being to no sites with water frontage. We had to walk from our site to go look at the freighters passing through. The terrible communication left a sour taste in my mouth, and she didn’t take accountability for misleading us. Instead she retreated to my husband that she never promised me a spot on the water. The point is, read BETWEEN the lines when reserving. The extra $5.00 to reserve over the phone was pointless, and we were just in front of a very busy highway. Bring earplugs if don’t want to be startled awake every couple of hours. Also, this is a very crowded small campground. If you want something more private, or to be surrounded by trees, this is definitely not the place for you. Sites are VERY close together. The showers are hot, and the facilities are relatively clean.

Great location it's right on the St Mary's river. Site are a little small and could use some upgrade but the view from our camper is fantastic. No Sewer hook up but that's part of being on the river. Definitely recommend and will return for sure. Oh the employees are great.
