For many Michigan residents, the allure of the great outdoors is undeniable. Whether it's the shimmering lakes, the lush forests, or the simple joy of a campfire under the stars, camping offers a unique way to reconnect with nature and unwind from the daily grind. If you're an avid camper or looking for a more relaxed, rustic outdoor experience in the heart of Michigan, Ted Ranch Campground in Brooklyn could be a destination to consider. Located in the picturesque Irish Hills area, this campground offers a back-to-basics approach to camping, focusing on natural beauty and community spirit.
Ted Ranch Campground presents itself as a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle, providing a more laid-back atmosphere for campers. It’s a spot that has attracted both daily visitors and seasonal campers, creating a diverse community of outdoor enthusiasts. While not equipped with all the modern luxuries of some resort-style campgrounds, Ted Ranch focuses on the core elements of camping: enjoying the natural surroundings, engaging in outdoor activities, and building connections with fellow campers. It's often described as having a "family-oriented" atmosphere, providing a space where individuals and groups can enjoy their time in a less structured environment.
As locals, we appreciate variety in our camping options. Sometimes, the state parks with their extensive facilities are exactly what we need. Other times, a more rustic and straightforward approach to camping is preferred, offering a different kind of charm and a potentially more budget-friendly experience. Ted Ranch Campground aims to fill that niche, providing a straightforward camping experience with access to a beautiful lake and plenty of open space to enjoy the Michigan landscape.
Ted Ranch Campground is conveniently located at 12985 Monroe Pike, Brooklyn, MI 49230, USA. This prime location places it squarely in the beautiful Irish Hills region of Michigan, known for its scenic landscapes, numerous lakes, and recreational opportunities. For Michigan residents, reaching the campground is relatively easy, as Brooklyn is well-connected by state and local roads. It’s about a 23-minute drive from Jackson, approximately 45 minutes from Ann Arbor, and under an hour from Monroe and Toledo, Ohio, making it an accessible getaway for a large portion of lower Michigan.
One of the most significant advantages of Ted Ranch Campground's location is its proximity to the Michigan International Speedway (MIS). For racing enthusiasts, this campground is an ideal spot, located just a quarter-mile from Turn 3 of the Speedway. This makes it an excellent base for race weekends, offering convenience for attendees looking to camp nearby. Beyond MIS, the campground is also a stone's throw away from downtown Brooklyn, providing easy access to local shops, restaurants, and other village amenities. Furthermore, its situation on Phelps Lake means direct access to water activities and views that enhance the camping experience. It’s also just a short 9-minute drive to Vineyard Lake Park, offering even more opportunities for swimming, fishing, and boating. This combination of natural beauty, local village charm, and proximity to major attractions makes Ted Ranch Campground a strategically located option for Michigan campers.

For Michigan residents seeking a genuine, no-frills camping experience, Ted Ranch Campground in Brooklyn offers a unique and accessible option. While some reviews highlight its rustic nature and certain limitations, these aspects can actually contribute to its suitability for a specific type of local camper – those who prioritize a back-to-basics approach, proximity to natural attractions, and a laid-back atmosphere over extensive modern amenities.
Firstly, its location in the beautiful Irish Hills region on Phelps Lake is a significant draw. Michigan is known for its incredible lakes and natural beauty, and Ted Ranch provides direct access to these assets for swimming, fishing, and boating. For locals, this means less travel time to reach a scenic waterfront destination, allowing for more time to enjoy the outdoors. Furthermore, its extremely close proximity to the Michigan International Speedway makes it an unparalleled choice for racing fans looking for convenient lodging during event weekends, saving on commute times and offering a unique tailgating experience right from their campsite.
The "family-oriented" and "laid-back atmosphere" often mentioned by positive reviews can be a major benefit for Michigan families looking for a relaxed getaway where kids can play and adults can unwind. While the absence of permanent bathhouses and sewer hookups is a notable point, many experienced campers and those with self-contained RVs are accustomed to such conditions. For them, the charm lies in the simplicity and the focus on outdoor living, rather than resort-style comforts. The fact that many campers become "seasonal" highlights a strong community bond and satisfaction among those who find this particular style of camping appealing.
Moreover, the flexible daily, weekly, and seasonal rates cater to various local needs, from short weekend escapes to an entire summer spent by the lake. This affordability, especially for rustic sites, can make camping accessible to a wider range of Michigan residents who might find state parks or more luxurious private campgrounds to be outside their budget or preference for a truly simple outdoor retreat.
In essence, Ted Ranch Campground is suitable for Michigan locals who appreciate rustic camping, the beauty of Phelps Lake, and a relaxed community vibe. It's for those who are prepared for basic facilities and prioritize direct access to nature and local attractions like MIS, offering a different, yet valuable, kind of Michigan camping adventure.

This place was rather disorganized and definitely not family friendly. It’s more of a large field decorated with porta-potties, broken playground equipment, and random farming machines. The lady at the front office kept her records on a steno pad and gave us quite the runaround because she didn’t know who we were or what our reservation was for. Site planning was abysmal. The large sites barely accommodated our 40ft fifth wheel and maneuvering was made near impossible by the whimsical placement of neighboring hookups, narrow roads, and porta-potties placed at the head of the sites. Despite only having partial hookups, the place didn’t have a proper bathhouse. We wouldn’t have noticed as much of it weren’t for the fact that a tornado went through just south of the campground and we had no place to shelter. I’d boondock in a Walmart parking lot before staying here again.
Aug 18, 2021 · Kristiana WhisnantFirst off, BE ADVISED THERE ARE NO SHOWERS OR PERMANENT RESTROOMS HERE, ONLY PORTA POTTIES SCATTERED THROUGHOUT CAMPGROUND. ALSO NO SEWER HOOKUPS AT ANY SITES, EVEN SEASONAL ONES!!!!!! We stayed here on a dpur of the moment trip (have friends that are seasonal campers) when we got there, office was closed. I called the main number, and the office lady came down and got us checked in. Went to where our site was, had to be told by "neighbors" where the site was, as it was only marked by occasional spray paint marks on the ground. Got camper positioned and needed extensions for both power and water. Both were 55' from my camper (I was on the closest edge of the site). The site was all dirt and rocks, as were a lot of the sites. Our first two (of 3) nights, the site next to us, was still partying at 230 am (and I don't mean just sitting around campfire enjoying nature). Quiet time is 10 pm to 8 am. Second night, I asked them at MIDNIGHT to take it down a few notches as we were going to bed. They were still going strong at 215 am. At that point, I called the office, and the "manager" said she'd try to reach them (which she did on a video call on messenger). The next day, the two seasonal sites involved were served with eviction papers, and my family spent our last two days and one night getting dirty stares and rude comments. Management/owners went to excessive lengths trying to assure us that it's not the ordinary at their campground and trying to get us to return at another time. That currently is up in the air. But eith NO SHOWERS OR PERMANENT BATHROOMS I won't be in any hurry to return. Especially since I can pay $6 more a night at state parks and have water, electric and sewer at my sites (I don't need the sewer since I have no holding tanks) nightly patrols to deal with "rowdy" campers AND multiple bathhouse for showers and restrooms (electric only sites AT SP are on average $5 cheaper than here) The lake here is very nice with a sandy/pebble bottom. The playground is VERY nice.
Jul 08, 2024 · Phil AKA FlipperTed's Ranch Campground has amazing staff and they keep the grounds clean. For Faster horses they make sure the camper's are safe. Thank you, for another awesome year
Jul 23, 2019 · Jennifer JohnsonVery lovely campsite. Tons of Rustic options available and pretty close to the race track. Lovely views of the lake with Rv rentals available. Also to the woman who worked last night to help us get in late, you were a life saver! 😀 We almost had to sleep in our car because we had to wait for my husbands job to let us know what his next assignment was. So thanks for keeping your prices where they are for the sites, even on race week. 🙌 Bless you and your Ranch! They have such a cool peacock 🦚 near the house too.
Jul 12, 2023 · Baby SpiritWe have been seasonal for almost 3 years. Very quiet. We love the private ownership. Glad we moved to this camp.
