It’s a developing property that opened in 2021, and its focus is on providing a reasonable expectation of privacy for its guests. The English Pale Campground and Resort is conveniently located at W14153 WI-54, Melrose, WI 54642, USA. This address places it along the Black River in Jackson County, approximately one mile west of the charming Village of Melrose. This location offers an excellent balance of accessibility and the secluded, natural environment that defines the campground.
Melrose itself is situated in west-central Wisconsin, making The English Pale a manageable drive from many parts of the state. It's accessible via State Highway 54, which connects to larger highways and interstates, allowing for a relatively straightforward journey for campers traveling from cities like La Crosse, Eau Claire, or even Madison. While the campground offers a rustic and private feel, it is not so remote as to be difficult to reach, ensuring that your journey to relaxation is as smooth as possible.
Upon arrival, guests will find themselves immersed in 70 acres of private property, including a mile of riverfront. The main campground area is situated about 70 feet above the Black River, offering elevated views and a sense of detachment from the immediate riverbank. Access to the key feature – the expansive 4+ acre private sandy beach along the Black River – is typically via a 10-to-15-minute walk on trails through the woods from the rustic parking lot, adding to the sense of adventure and discovery.
The location along the Black River provides direct access to water-based activities, which are a major draw for the campground. Despite its rustic nature and focus on privacy, the ease of access to a state highway means that essential supplies in Melrose are not far away, balancing convenience with the desire for an off-grid experience. This thoughtful positioning allows for both adventurous exploration and comfortable self-sufficiency during your stay.
The English Pale Campground and Resort prides itself on offering a rustic yet accommodating camping experience, with services tailored to provide privacy and comfort without the typical commercial campground amenities. It focuses on facilitating a self-sufficient stay in a natural setting.
These services underscore The English Pale's commitment to providing a comfortable, private, and rustic camping experience, with a focus on self-sufficiency and personalized attention from the host.
The English Pale Campground and Resort offers a distinctive set of features and highlights that make it a truly memorable destination for campers seeking a unique and secluded experience in Wisconsin. These elements contribute to its rustic charm and appeal.
These features combine to make The English Pale Campground and Resort a unique and highly desirable destination for those seeking a tranquil, adult-focused, and pet-friendly camping experience deeply connected to Wisconsin's natural beauty.
While The English Pale Campground and Resort doesn't broadly advertise numerous, rotating promotions in the traditional sense, it does offer a value proposition that is inherently appealing, particularly for longer stays and group bookings. Given its unique, rustic, and private nature, the focus is more on the intrinsic value of the experience rather than discounted rates.
One notable offer is related to its pricing structure for multi-night stays at the rustic RV/Travel Trailer/Tent sites. The rental is typically $190 for the first two nights, with a reduced rate of $75 per night after that, up to a maximum of 7 nights. To secure this discount for longer stays, guests are advised to contact Cal (the owner) before booking. This structured pricing essentially acts as a standing promotion for those planning a more extended visit, encouraging deeper immersion in the natural surroundings.
Another significant "offer" is the option for a full property takeover. For groups looking for ultimate privacy and exclusivity, the entire property, including the Manor House, all campsites, and the beach, can be rented. This private takeover is available for a minimum of a 2-night, 3-day weekend starting as low as $850 for up to 40 guests, with additional nights at $350 each. This is an excellent value for large family reunions, wedding groups, or friends wanting a completely private experience, and is the only scenario where children are permitted on the property.
Additionally, The English Pale offers outdoor winter storage for RVs, campers, and boats for a total fee of $180 for the winter season (ending May 1st). While not a camping promotion, it's a valuable service for locals needing seasonal storage solutions.
For the most current pricing, availability, and specific details regarding booking the property or extended stays, it is always recommended to contact The English Pale Campground and Resort directly. Their personalized approach means direct communication is the best way to secure your desired experience and understand any current offerings.

For Wisconsinites, The English Pale Campground and Resort offers a distinctly appealing option for a local getaway, perfectly aligning with a desire for genuine outdoor experiences, privacy, and the unique charm of our state's natural landscapes. Its suitability for locals stems from several key aspects that resonate with the preferences of residents across Wisconsin.
Firstly, the adult-only (21+) policy creates a tranquil and relaxed atmosphere that many locals, particularly those seeking a break from family demands or simply a more mature environment, will deeply appreciate. It’s a space where peace and quiet reign, allowing for genuine unwinding and reconnection with nature without the typical noise of a family-oriented campground. This targeted appeal makes it a perfect retreat for couples or groups of friends.
Secondly, the emphasis on rustic camping with spacious, private sites caters to a growing desire among Wisconsinites for more authentic, less commercialized outdoor experiences. The absence of full hookups at every site encourages a degree of self-sufficiency and a closer connection to the natural surroundings, while still providing essential comforts like a water station and an outdoor shower. This blend of "roughing it" with thoughtful amenities strikes a chord with those who value simplicity and independence in their adventures.
Furthermore, the property’s extensive features – a 70-acre private expanse, a mile of Black River frontage, a 4+ acre private sandy beach, and wooded trails – offer a wealth of recreational opportunities right on site. This means locals don't need to travel far to enjoy fishing, kayaking, hiking, or simply relaxing by the water. The ability to have dogs off-leash at the private beach is also a significant draw for Wisconsin pet owners, who often seek places where their furry companions can truly roam free and enjoy the outdoors.
Lastly, the personalized attention and accommodating nature of the owner, Cal, add a layer of genuine Wisconsin hospitality to the experience. Supporting a local business that is so dedicated to guest satisfaction creates a feeling of connection and trust, encouraging repeat visits. For those in Wisconsin who cherish their outdoor spaces, appreciate a unique, private, and adult-focused environment, and value direct, friendly service, The English Pale Campground and Resort offers an exceptional and highly suitable choice for their next local adventure. It's truly a place to embrace the quiet beauty of our state.

Best rustic camping spot I've ever stayed at. Eagles fishing, private sandy beach dogs off leash.
May 27, 2025 · ricky yawnA few of us stayed at campsite #4 on the beach and it was a great time! Cal is extremely accommodating with transportation to camp, chopped firewood, ice, and even alcohol if you want. We weathered rain for almost 2 days, but Cal made sure to come down and check on us and warned us of potential flooding. The river was amazing and us and our dogs had the best time! We even had a double rainbow right in on the river.
Jul 07, 2024 · Fayth SeibelThis is our 3 rd. year 8th time camping at the English Pale. It is very quiet and peaceful. Our Golden Retrievers I think like it as much as we do. We are definitely Glampers and Cal makes every effort to make sure our stay is a memorable one. There is always a stack of firewood waiting when we get there. The beach is right along the Black River and is very nice for swimming, kayaking or tubing. Cal is constantly making improvements, and it shows. The property is very clean and maintained. See you next year.
Aug 11, 2024 · ben samSuper awesome massive beach along the river! Amazing customer service. Completely rustic experience if you want it, with the right amount of amenities haha. Thank you!
Jun 09, 2024 · Isaac CarrHad a great time at English Pale with a few friends at Rustic Site 4 last weekend (mid-July). Camped on the beach, anchored some tubes in the water, played some spike ball in the sand—loved it. Cal was super friendly and helpful, site price, as well as offered amenities like ice delivery, wood, and supplies shuttle were all reasonably priced. Pit toilet up by “lodge” is clean and well kept, there’s a real outdoor sink to wash hands, and the shower area is extremely nice. Will definitely be coming back next summer
