It’s part of the broader Thousand Trails network, which often implies a certain level of amenity and service for its members and guests. However, like any travel destination, it has its unique characteristics and offerings that are important for prospective visitors to understand.
This article will provide a detailed look at Thousand Trails St. Clair, offering insights into its location, the services and features it provides, and what you can expect during your stay. We’ll also consider why this particular campground might be a suitable choice for local Michigan residents looking for their next outdoor adventure.
Location and Accessibility
Thousand Trails St. Clair is situated at 1299 Wadhams Rd, St Clair, MI 48079, USA. This location places it within convenient reach for many residents in Southeast Michigan and beyond. St. Clair is a picturesque city known for its beautiful waterfront and historic charm, nestled along the St. Clair River, which flows between Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair.
The campground's accessibility is a significant advantage. It is noted to be "close enough to Detroit and Port Huron," making it an appealing option for urban dwellers seeking a quick escape without extensive travel. The proximity to major interstates and state routes means that reaching the campground is relatively straightforward. While some interstate noise was mentioned in a review, this is often an expected trade-off for such convenient accessibility to larger metropolitan areas and major roadways.
Being in the St. Clair area also means campers have easy access to local attractions, including riverfront parks, charming downtown shops, and various dining options in St. Clair and the nearby communities of Port Huron and Marine City. This blend of natural surroundings and nearby urban conveniences ensures that visitors can enjoy both the peace of the campground and the amenities of the region.
Services Offered
- RV and Tent Sites: Thousand Trails St. Clair provides dedicated spots for both RVs and traditional tent camping. This caters to a wide range of camping preferences, from those seeking full hook-ups for their motorhomes to others who prefer a more traditional, rustic tent experience.
- Annual and Open Spots: The campground offers both "annuals" spots, likely for long-term or seasonal residents, and "open spots" for transient visitors. This flexibility allows for different types of stays, catering to both extended getaways and shorter camping trips.
- Gated Access: The property features a gated entrance, which often provides an added layer of security and peace of mind for campers. However, one review noted an issue with receiving the access pin upon arrival, highlighting the importance of clear communication upon check-in.
- Bathhouse Facilities: A bathhouse is available for campers, providing restrooms and showers. It's worth noting that a previous review indicated concerns about cleanliness, specifically mentioning a "no pooping in shower" sign and comparing the condition to a gas station bathroom. While management strives for cleanliness, it's prudent for visitors to be prepared for varied conditions and to report any issues to staff.
- Staff Assistance: Positive feedback was received regarding the staff, who were described as "nice." Responsive and helpful staff are crucial for a positive camping experience, assisting with check-ins, inquiries, and addressing concerns.
Features / Highlights
- Recreational Amenities: Thousand Trails St. Clair offers a selection of recreational facilities. While specific details on each are not extensive, customer reviews mention a golf course (described as "good"), a basketball court ("okay"), and a volleyball area ("looked okay"). These amenities provide opportunities for active recreation within the campground.
- Swimming Pool: A pool is present at the campground. While one review noted it "looked good," it was not yet open during their visit. This indicates that the pool is a seasonal amenity, typically available during warmer months, and campers should confirm its operational status before arrival if it's a key feature for their stay.
- Reasonable Rates: According to a customer review, the rates at Thousand Trails St. Clair are considered "pretty reasonable." This suggests that the campground offers good value for its amenities and location, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious campers.
- Proximity to Attractions: Its location near Detroit and Port Huron means campers can easily explore urban attractions, cultural sites, and waterfront activities in addition to enjoying the campground's natural setting.
- Variety of Sites: The availability of both RV and tent sites, as well as annual and open spots, indicates a versatility that can accommodate different camping styles and durations of stay.

Customer Reviews
Bathrooms were gross, with a “no pooping in shower” sign in the bathhouse. Worse than a gas station bathroom. We didn’t have sewer and stayed 8 days, so we had to use it. Golf was good. Pool looked good, but wasn’t open yet. Basketball was okay. Volleyball looked okay. We had people smoking pot next to us, so joy! Our site was okay, overgrown grass coming through the rock. This could be really nice, but it’s not. We likely won’t stay again here, unless out of necessity. No issues with staff, they were nice. Gated, which is great…except we weren’t given a pin and had to call 4 numbers before someone answered to give us the pin. That was terrible. Close enough to Detroit and Port Huron, so location was fine. Interstate noise, but we expected that. Overall it just needs attention and elbow grease.
Visited some friends at this campground. Pretty nice set up. The have spots for annuals and also open spots. Their rates are pretty reasonable.
Beautiful park that feels more like a tight knit community that you automatically become a part of just by showing up. People are extremely friendly and have fun activities every weekend! This place is AMAZING for kids, but it just a great for adults. Can’t say enough about this park. Only bad parts were: the sewage treatment pond does give off a pretty pungent odor and some of the RV spot are a little tight. It is big rig friendly, my only advice is take it slow if you not experienced, like myself.
Clean restrooms and showers. Beautiful pool. Staff was friendly. Pull-through sites are super close together. They are "buddy sites" where every two campers have their front door facing each other. This is confusing to dogs who assume the whole area belongs to them. My husband was bit by neighbor's dog. The staff handled it well and professionally. The water tastes terrible here. We bought bottled water the whole time. We found things to do, but all in all, this was one of our least favorite campgrounds we've stayed in all year.
This is one of the better Thousand Trails we have been too. A lot to do here and location allows you to hit some great historical spots. We showed up in time for the Labor Day weekend but even then as crowded as it was the spacing between campers hidden away in the woods makes it seem less so. I love these types of camp grounds where it looks like a Camp Ground, feels like a campground. Only gripe is the Firewood they sell at $8 a pop is worthless. It doesn't burn as it is all quite wet and not properly cured. Other than that?? We will be back. We love this place.
