Introduction / Overview
For Pennsylvanians seeking an authentic, nature-immersed camping experience with the added benefit of excellent amenities, the Tionesta Recreation Area Campground is a must-visit destination. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), this site is beautifully situated on the Tionesta Lake project, right along the tranquil Tionesta Creek, just below the Dam. The campground is well-known among locals for its deeply forested setting, offering a refreshing escape from the daily grind and serving as a gateway to the vast public lands of the region.
Tionesta Recreation Area Campground is a favorite for RV and tent campers alike, providing a mix of sites ranging from primitive spots to those with full hook-ups. The environment here is intentionally designed for relaxation and reconnection—with nature and with one another. Many sites are generously sized and heavily shaded, providing privacy that can be hard to find in other parks. As one local camper noted, the lack of strong cell service is actually a highlight, forcing guests to “disconnect from the world and spend time talking and playing games.” This focus on quality time, combined with direct access to water recreation and the surrounding wilderness, makes it a true gem in the Pennsylvania Wilds. It is an ideal basecamp for anyone looking to enjoy the abundant fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing opportunities that Forest County has to offer.
Location and Accessibility
The Tionesta Recreation Area Campground is located at the Tionesta Lake in Tionesta, PA 16353. Its placement is strategic for outdoor enthusiasts, nestled in the rugged hills of northwestern Pennsylvania. To reach the site from the center of Tionesta, campers typically travel a short distance south on State Route 36 and follow the clear signs directing them into the recreation area.
This location places the campground in Forest County, a region famous for having nearly half of its land preserved as public grounds, including parts of the massive Allegheny National Forest and various State Game Lands. This means that while the campground itself is highly accessible and offers comfortable amenities, the surrounding environment is pristine and ripe for adventure. It is situated directly below the Tionesta Dam and alongside the Tionesta Creek, offering a variety of water levels and landscapes. For locals traveling from Western and Central Pennsylvania—including those from Pittsburgh, Erie, or Clarion—the drive is manageable and incredibly scenic, rewarding travelers with an immediate sense of quiet isolation upon arrival. The ease of getting off the main roads and into this peaceful, heavily forested valley is a major draw for local Pennsylvanians looking for an authentic, convenient outdoor escape.

Very beautiful campground. Right along the Tionesta Creek. Some sites are along the creek, others are only a few yards away. Some sites are more secluded while others are great if you’re traveling with a group to camp together. Does not have great cell service but that helps you disconnect from the world and spend time talking and playing games. Some bathhouses are better than others. We’ll definitely stay here again.
Jun 16, 2025 · CarlyAwesome campground, plenty of space, got a primative site right next to bathrooms, warm private showers in a huge warm bathroom. Quick walk to the outflow and creekside trail. Always came to visit growing up but our first time camping here, definitely would like to come back in the future! Prices for camping isnt too expensive at all, lots to explore within campground and town.
Aug 19, 2025 · Beverly LaskowskyGood spacing, level sites. Seems like all sites are full hookup. Mostly shaded sites but a few with sun. Several bathrooms, they are functional but older and showing their age. Several sites along the river. Sites near the outflow have white noise. Grounds are well kept. Friendly volunteers and staff.
Jul 26, 2025 · James JenkinsOur favorite campground hands down! It's a nice place to ride bikes, hike, boat, or swim in the lake. We make several trips to this campground each season. They have full hookups, bathhouse, playground, & paved roads. Sites are gravel with picnic tables and fire rings. Cross over the dam and enjoy a day on the lake fishing, boating, swimming, skiing, or tubing.
Jun 19, 2025 · Cynthia JordanGreat Campground with full hookups. Depending on the site, you may have some trees for hammocks. All sites seems to be very shaded. Bathrooms are clean. I have not seen the showers (not sure they have). Majority of the campsites are close to each other.
