The Upper Manistee River State Forest Campground is situated at Manistee 1 and 2, Grayling, MI 49738, USA. This location places it strategically within the heart of Northern Michigan, a region renowned for its vast state forests and pristine waterways. Grayling, the nearest notable town, is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly known for its connection to the Au Sable and Manistee Rivers.
Accessibility to the campground is generally straightforward, though it is a rustic state forest campground, meaning the approach roads within the forest might be gravel or unpaved. However, these are typically well-maintained for vehicle access. The campground's setting within a "red pine plantation" indicates a natural, undeveloped environment, contributing to its secluded and peaceful ambiance.

Promotions or Special Offers:
As a state forest campground operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Upper Manistee River State Forest Campground adheres to a standard fee structure rather than offering commercial promotions or special deals. The inherent "promotion" of these campgrounds lies in their affordability and the pure, rustic outdoor experience they provide. Daily camping fees are typically set at a very reasonable rate, making it an economical choice for Michiganders seeking an authentic wilderness getaway.
The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, which, while not a discount, offers a unique kind of "flexibility promotion." It means you don't need to navigate complex online reservation systems or plan months in advance, allowing for spontaneous trips whenever the urge for a natural escape strikes. This often means there are open sites even during popular times, as noted by a reviewer who found plenty of space on a rainy July weekend.
Any broader state-wide discounts, such as those associated with the Michigan Recreation Passport (which grants access to all state parks and state-managed recreation areas for a single annual fee), or specific discounts for seniors or veterans as part of Michigan DNR programs, would apply here. However, these are not site-specific promotions but rather state-level initiatives. For the most accurate and current information on fees and any applicable state programs, Michiganders should consult the official Michigan DNR website or contact the relevant district office. The true appeal of Upper Manistee River State Forest Campground remains its excellent value for a truly serene and rustic camping experience.

Customer Reviews
An idyllic rustic campground cut into a mature red pine plantation. The tall pines provide some screening between campsites, though there is little to no forest floor vegetation here. Sites are generally well spaced from one another. One hand pump at the campground entrance had good tasting and relatively clear drinking water. Several river access points are provided, though few to no campsites are actually on the river. There were plenty of open sites on the rainy July weekend I passed through.
My girlfriend and I wanted a little weekend getaway. I came across this gem and very happy that I did. TONS of sites. We showed up Saturday evening and there were only a handful of people. Pit bathrooms were decent. Firepits were great. Very smooth and well placed campsites with a picnic table. We very much enjoyed ourselves. Well pump right before you enter the location.
Great spot for the fall season! Must bring cash or checks to register for campsite. All self serve closest store is about 10 miles away in Grayling. There are 40 sites 10 sites that you have to carry your camping gear too. Those 10 lots seem to be the best they are so close to the river with breathtaking views. The hiking was great beautiful tall pines surrounding you. These sites are rustic they do have out houses that were kept up but we went at the end of the season and would have hated to see how they were in 90 degree weather. Overall I’m very pleased with this location. If you do decide to stay please keep it clean and respect the area! You won’t be disappointed at this little gem in the forest.
