The park itself is named after Adeline Wanatee (1910-1996), a respected artist and advocate for Native American and women's rights, and a 1993 Iowa Women's Hall of Fame honoree, reflecting a commitment to local heritage and natural preservation.
This campground has garnered a reputation for its well-maintained facilities and diverse recreational opportunities. For those coming from Cedar Rapids, it's just a short drive, offering a quick escape to nature without extensive travel time.
The convenience of its location is one of Wanatee Park's most significant advantages for local Iowans. Despite feeling like a tranquil countryside retreat, the campground is remarkably close to urban amenities. As noted by a local reviewer, "It feels country but you're only 5 min from Marion which has lots of shopping and dining options." Campsite Availability and Reservation System: The campground offers 69 campsites, divided into two main areas: A Loop and B Loop.
- A Loop: This loop is primarily for reservations and allows advanced booking from 5 days up to 1 year in advance. This is the only family campground in the Linn County Park system that allows advanced reservations, offering peace of mind for those planning their trips well in advance. All but sites 14, 15, 17, and 19 in A Loop have sewer hookups, making it suitable for RVs seeking full amenities.
- B Loop: This loop operates on a first-come, first-served basis. It's an excellent option for spontaneous campers or those who couldn't secure a reservation in A Loop, and many visitors find plenty of spaces available. Campers must self-register and pay the required fees at a kiosk upon arrival.
-
Modern Restroom and Shower Facilities: A significant highlight of Wanatee Park Campground, as frequently praised by reviewers, is its "clean and amazing" modern restroom and shower facility. These state-of-the-art facilities are well-maintained, providing a comfortable and refreshing experience, especially after a day of outdoor activities.
-
RV Dump Station: While not all sites offer sewer hookups, the campground provides an on-site RV dump station. This essential service allows RV campers to conveniently empty their waste tanks before departing, ensuring a hassle-free end to their trip.
-
Water and Electric Hookups: Campsites in both A and B loops typically offer electric hookups. Many sites also provide water hookups, enhancing the comfort and convenience for RV and trailer campers. Specific details on amperage (e.g., 20, 30, 50 amp) may vary by site and should be confirmed upon booking or arrival.
-
Pet-Friendly Policy: Wanatee Park Campground is pet-friendly, allowing furry companions to join in on the camping fun. Pets must be kept on a leash, except in designated off-leash areas, and owners are responsible for cleaning up after them.
-
Firewood Sales: For campers looking to enjoy a classic campfire, firewood bundles are available for purchase within the park, ensuring a convenient source of fuel for cozy evenings.
Wanatee Park Campground offers a diverse range of features and highlights that cater to various outdoor interests, making it a popular choice for locals.
-
Extensive Trail System: The park boasts a comprehensive trail system, popular for hiking, walking, and mountain biking. A four-mile trail begins in the upper park area, with portions also designated for horseback riding. During the winter months, parts of the trail system are even groomed for cross-country skiing, extending recreational opportunities year-round. These trails offer fantastic opportunities to explore the park's natural beauty and observe local wildlife.
-
Inclusive Playground: A standout feature, particularly for families, is the "amazing" and wheelchair-accessible playground located within the campground area. This modern playground is designed to be inclusive, with flat ground allowing easy access for wheelchairs and direct roll-on access to the main play structure. This thoughtful design ensures that children of all abilities can enjoy the fun.
-
Off-Leash Dog Park: For dog owners, Wanatee Park is home to an off-leash dog park where canine companions can run free and socialize. While one reviewer noted difficulty finding it, this dedicated area is a significant highlight for pet owners looking to let their "fur-babies get out and run off some energy."
-

While specific, regularly advertised "promotions" for individual campsites at Wanatee Park Campground are not typically offered in the way a retail business might, Linn County Conservation, which manages the park, does provide cost-saving opportunities and a structured fee system.
Instead of promotional discounts, visitors to Wanatee Park Campground should be aware of the following fee structures and potential savings:
-
Daily Camping Fees: Fees vary based on the type of site (e.g., electric, electric with sewer, non-electric). For instance, A Loop sites with electric and sewer may have a daily rate of $35, while electric-only sites could be $30. B Loop (electric) might be $25. These fees are set to provide consistent and affordable access to the facilities.
-
Discount Camping Coupon Booklets: Linn County Conservation offers "Discount Camping Coupon Booklets." These booklets provide 28 nights of camping for a set price, often around $600. Each coupon pays for one night of camping. It's important to note that these coupons are typically valid for first-come, first-served sites (like B Loop) and are generally not applicable to reservation sites (A Loop). Coupons are usually valid for the year of purchase and the following year. These can be a significant saving for frequent campers within Linn County Parks.
-
Annual Permits: While not a direct camping promotion, Linn County Parks require an annual permit for vehicle entry. Purchasing an annual permit for $50 (as opposed to a $10 daily permit) can be a cost-effective choice for locals who plan to visit Wanatee Park or other Linn County Parks multiple times throughout the year.
-
Group Rental Discounts: For the lodges and shelters within Wanatee Park, Linn County Conservation occasionally offers discounts, such as a 15% discount if three consecutive days are booked for certain facilities. These types of offers are for rentals of larger facilities rather than individual campsites.

Customer Reviews
Really nice park. 1/2 by reservation (A loop) in advance, 1/2 first come first served (B Loop). We did not have reservations, but found plenty of spaces to choose from in the B Loop. The on-site showers were clean and amazing after a long drive. Only complaint would be no sewer hookups at the sites, but they do have an RV dump on-site. There were signs for a dog park, but we never found it. Maybe more signs could point travelers in the right direction so their fur-babies can get out and run off some energy.
This is a great campground with nice showers/restrooms and plenty of hiking trails. It feels country but your only 5min from Marion which has lots of shopping and dinning options. I highly recommend the water park in town. The playground at the campsite is amazing! I want to highlight that it is wheel chair accessible. The ground is flat and you can easily roll onto the main play structure.
Wanatee Park (Linn County) is our 149th stop and we stayed for 4 nights. If you want a full hook up, you need to reserve early as there are a small number. All reservations are done online and there is no office to check in - easy process. A beautiful county park with paved interior roads with the sites very spread out from one another. The pads are very long and you have a section of concrete on many sites which was nice in loop A. Nicely landscaped and well-maintained where it seems each site has at least one shade tree. One fyi is in the A loop, you may have to go around the wrong way to ensure your utilities are on the correct side. Overall, I would rate this a 4.5. Connectivity (1 pm): No park WiFi available; Verizon 35.5 down/1.21 up; T-Mobile 362.0 down/1.43 up.
Very well kept. Exceptional showers and restrooms. For an improved camp ground the sites are not as level as one might expect. Full hookups 30 and 50.
Very well maintained Campground and park! We really enjoyed our stay here. We will be back! Spacious spots for campers, well maintained restrooms, the park is perfect for kids of all ages because they have a toddler area and a big kid area! I like the composite wood chips because they aren't sharp and pokey.
