Waverly Lake Campground is conveniently located at 500 Waverly Lake Rd, Franklin, IL 62638, USA. This address places it just northwest of the town of Waverly and southwest of Franklin, in Morgan County, Illinois. For many residents across Central Illinois, its location offers straightforward and relatively quick access, making it an excellent choice for a spontaneous weekend trip or a planned fishing excursion.
The campground's proximity to Franklin means it’s easily reachable via state routes, generally involving well-maintained roads leading right up to the lake. From Springfield, the state capital, it's roughly a 45-minute drive southwest. From Jacksonville, it's an even shorter trip, approximately 20-30 minutes southeast. This accessibility minimizes travel time, allowing Illinois locals to maximize their time enjoying the outdoors rather than being stuck in transit.
While the campground embraces a rustic feel, its address ensures it's not overly remote or difficult to find. The main entrance off Waverly Lake Road leads directly to the camping areas and the lake itself. It’s important to note that a train track runs to the west of the lake, meaning occasional train noise might be heard, but for many, this simply adds to the unique, rural Illinois charm of the location, reminding you that you're truly out in the countryside.
Waverly Lake Campground prides itself on offering a free, rustic camping experience, focusing on essential amenities to support your outdoor adventure. While it's not a full-service RV park, it provides key necessities for a comfortable stay:
- Free Camping: A major highlight for budget-conscious campers, camping at Waverly Lake is entirely free. However, a permit may be required for boat use on the lake, available for a yearly fee at Waverly City Hall or the Water Plant.
- Primitive Campsites: The campground offers various primitive sites suitable primarily for tent camping. Some sites may accommodate small RVs or trailers, but there are no electrical hookups, potable water at individual sites, or sewer services.
- Restroom Facilities: Porta-potties are strategically spread out across the park. While rustic, visitors note that they are generally clean, though, as expected in a natural setting, a few bugs might be present.
- Trash Receptacles: Adequate trashcans are conveniently located throughout the park, encouraging visitors to keep the area clean and beautiful.
- Ground Fires Permitted: Campers are allowed to have ground fires, perfect for cooking or enjoying a traditional campfire experience. Some campsites even have makeshift fire rings available.

Waverly Lake Campground offers a variety of features and highlights that make it a compelling destination for Illinois outdoor enthusiasts:
- Excellent Fishing: The lake is renowned for its diverse fish population, making it a favorite spot for anglers. Enthusiastic fishermen have reported catching channel catfish, yellow bullhead catfish, striped bass, largemouth bass, and plenty of panfish. The lake is also known to have a good population of shad baitfish.
- Productive Baits: Local anglers have had great success with ordinary nightcrawlers for bullhead and channel cats, often outperforming store-bought baits.
- Small, Manageable Lake: Waverly Lake is a 112-acre reservoir, offering a more intimate fishing and boating experience compared to larger, more crowded bodies of water. Its maximum depth is 15 feet.
- Boat Launch Access: A boat ramp with a dock provides convenient access for launching small boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. A yearly permit for boat use is required.
- Abundant Picnic Areas: The presence of "quite a lot of picnic tables" makes it easy for day-trippers and campers alike to enjoy outdoor meals and gatherings.
- Peaceful, Rustic Setting: The campground offers a quiet environment, away from the hustle and bustle, perfect for those seeking a true escape into nature.
- Wildlife Viewing: The natural surroundings provide opportunities to observe local wildlife, enhancing the outdoor experience.
- Free Camping: As a significant highlight, the fact that camping is free allows visitors to enjoy the outdoors without financial burden.
- Accessibility to Shore Fishing (Limited): While shore fishing spots may not be abundant due to the lake's size, there are still opportunities for casting from the bank.
- Train Activity: The proximity to a train track to the west of the lake means occasional train noise. For some, this adds a unique character to the rustic setting.
As a free, primitive campground, Waverly Lake Campground does not typically offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a private, fee-based campground might. Its primary "offer" is the inherent value of free camping, which is a significant benefit for anyone looking to enjoy the Illinois outdoors on a budget. This free access is a consistent feature, not a limited-time deal.
However, it is important for visitors to be aware of the specific usage rules to ensure a continuous positive experience. Camping is permitted for up to four consecutive days per month. This rule helps ensure fair access for all and prevents over-usage of the primitive sites. While there are no monetary discounts, this policy allows for regular, short-term enjoyment of the lake and its surroundings.
For those planning to use a boat (including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards) on Waverly Lake, a yearly permit is required. This permit, which costs $25.00, can be obtained at Waverly City Hall or the City of Waverly Water Plant. While not a "promotion," understanding this small fee is crucial for boaters to comply with local regulations and fully enjoy the lake's aquatic features.
Visitors are encouraged to check with the City of Waverly or local signage at the campground for any updates on rules or specific events that might be held at the lake, which could offer additional value or recreational opportunities.
For information regarding Waverly Lake Campground, including details about camping, fishing, or boat permits, the primary point of contact is the local municipal office. While the campground itself does not have a dedicated phone line, inquiries can typically be directed to the City of Waverly.
- Address: 500 Waverly Lake Rd, Franklin, IL 62638, USA. (Note: For administrative inquiries, the City of Waverly City Hall or Water Plant would be the appropriate contact points for permits or general information about the lake.)

Customer Reviews
Spent a couple days here traveling from Arizona to Maine. A few people drove through but we were the only overnighter. Train noise occasionally, porta pottys and trashcans spread out across the park.
I really enjoy this place. We usually just fish but have camped a time or two. Like most places when camping it's difficult to find a decently level campsite for a tent. There's no electricity or potable water but camping is free. There's not an abundance of shore fishing spots but it is a small lake. There are three or four porta potty' s that for the most part are clean but like everything camping there's a few bugs. There are quite a lot of picnic tables and adequate trash receptacles. I've caught channel catfish, yellow bullhead catfish, striped bass, large mouth bass and plenty of panfish here. There seems to be a lot of shad baitfish and from what other fisherman in the area have told me, the channel cats love live shad. I have had really good luck with ordinary night crawlers for bullhead and channel cats. Nightcrawlers seem to get me more bites than stink bait or other store bought baits. I haven't had much luck with strawberry Jello hotdogs. Ground fires are permitted and some camp sites have makeshift fire rings. There's is a small pavilion/ shelter at one of the camp sites. There is a train track to the west of the lake and the few times that I tent camped overnight I was woken up multiple times by the trains that came through. Just be aware that might happen. There's a boat ramp with a dock. All in all this is one of my favorite places to spend time outdoors that is in close proximity to my home.
Great view, peaceful, and free for 4 days..includes a nice little fishing spot.
Nice free 4 day camping by Waverly Lake..one bathroom..that's not kept clean..3 camping spots upon entering Nice shade .and a shelter with 2 picnic tables .fire pits and trash cans....as I walked around saw trash on the ground and cans and glass in the fire pits..with all the garbage cans there ..that tells me people is so friggy lazy they can't walk a few steps to the garbage can ...There is a boat dock down the road where IL residents can fish ..it's a dead end and small turn around ..A 19 ft travel trailer could turn around but nothing bigger..I did my part by picking up the trash and cleaning glass and cans of the fire pits ..I believe in leaving a place cleaner then I found it..And as a FYI ...a local cop patrols the campground to make sure No One over stays their 4 days....I will definitely return some day.
Any size rig will fit in the first two sites, no services but full internet Vz and ATT. Quiet with occasional train, no other free options nearby. Quite nice!
