This article will serve as your comprehensive guide to White Pine Canoe Campground, designed to help local Michiganders understand what makes this a prime destination for their next outdoor excursion. We'll delve into its location, the services it provides, its unique features, and why it's ideally suited for those looking to connect with the heart of Michigan's wilderness.
Location and Accessibility
White Pine Canoe Campground is ideally situated at 6761 Woods Rd, Grayling, MI 49738, USA. This location places it directly on the banks of the mighty Au Sable River, a waterway legendary among canoeists, kayakers, and fly fishermen across Michigan and beyond. Grayling, the nearest significant town, is a vibrant community in Crawford County, known as the "Canoe Capital of Michigan" and a gateway to the vast recreational opportunities of the Huron-Manistee National Forests.
The campground's accessibility is excellent for Michiganders. It's relatively close to major arteries such as I-75 (the primary north-south highway through Michigan's Lower Peninsula) and M-72 (an east-west route). This makes the drive from southern Michigan cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids, or Lansing quite manageable, leading you directly into the heart of "Up North" country. While Woods Road may be a county road, it is typically well-maintained, ensuring a smooth approach for most vehicles and trailers.
The beauty of this location lies not just in its direct river frontage but also in its immersion within the natural landscape. Grayling offers essential services including grocery stores, gas stations, bait shops, and various outfitters for canoe, kayak, and tube rentals, making it easy for campers to stock up on supplies or arrange their river adventures. The proximity to numerous other state and national forest lands means that beyond the river, there are endless opportunities for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing. The combination of easy access to both wilderness and necessary town amenities makes White Pine Canoe Campground a highly convenient choice for Michigan outdoor enthusiasts.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
White Pine Canoe Campground stands as an ideal destination for Michiganders seeking an authentic and accessible outdoor experience in the heart of their home state. Its suitability for locals is multifaceted, combining prime location with a focus on genuine wilderness enjoyment.
Firstly, its direct frontage on the legendary Au Sable River is an unparalleled draw for anyone interested in paddling, fishing, or simply enjoying the serene beauty of one of Michigan's most iconic waterways. The spacious, well-maintained tent sites, complete with new fire rings, offer a comfortable yet rustic base for a true camping experience. While the vault toilets are a common rustic feature, their presence ensures essential facilities are available.
Furthermore, its location near Grayling provides the best of both worlds: immediate access to vast state forest lands for hiking and exploration, coupled with the convenience of a nearby town for supplies and any forgotten essentials. This balance makes it highly practical for a weekend trip or an extended stay for Michigan residents.

Clean and quiet with great river spots, new rings, and water point
Aug 05, 2023 · Lyle JohnsonWell maintained campground, space for probably a hundred tents or more. Nice landing for the boat. Easy ramp up off the river. The toilets were extremely smelly but I think that is to be expected, I was just glad they were there. The ground I put my tent on was level and very nice for a tent. We brought our own firewood so I did not see if there was any to be found on the ground. The woods were pretty around the campground.
Aug 17, 2022 · Curtis CastoWe stayed here overnight on our canoe trip. Very quiet and full of wildlife during the weekdays.
Sep 29, 2024 · Vanessa CaseyIt's a big camp ground on the river. It's got one main landing and two small ones that people used in the past. It's got well pump water, pit toilet and lots of room. Nice place to camp when your paddling down river on the Au Sable.
Aug 30, 2021 · Drex PagtalunanOn the river access is good. Finding by vehicle is near impossible. I could not locate it via road so I don't suggest any RVs coming back as it is a tight two-track to get there and all I saw was a gate. From the river though it's perfect for an overnight stop with a big or small group.
