WMA Pearl River WMA Camp Grounds About

For Louisiana locals craving an authentic outdoor experience, far from the hustle and bustle but still within reach, the WMA Pearl River WMA Camp Grounds in Slidell offers a unique and appealing option. Nestled within the vast Pearl River Wildlife Management Area (WMA), this campground is a true gem for those who appreciate primitive camping, RV boondocking, and immersing themselves in the state's incredible natural landscapes. Unlike highly developed commercial campgrounds, Pearl River WMA Camp Grounds provides a more rustic and serene environment, allowing you to truly connect with the wild beauty of Louisiana.

This campground is perfect for the adventurer at heart, whether you're bringing your RV for a quiet boondocking experience or setting up a tent for a traditional camping trip. Many local campers have lauded its peaceful atmosphere, offering a refreshing break from everyday life. While there might be some mild highway noise in the distance, it generally fades into the background, replaced by the sounds of nature. The area's appeal extends beyond just a place to sleep; it's a gateway to exploring the rich ecosystems of the Pearl River WMA, known for its diverse wildlife and stunning swamp scenery.

What makes WMA Pearl River WMA Camp Grounds particularly attractive to Louisiana residents is its accessibility for those looking for a "back to basics" camping experience that isn't just another parking lot. It provides an excellent opportunity for "boondocking" or dispersed camping, which is a highly sought-after style for many RVers and tent campers. This type of camping means fewer amenities but often translates to more solitude and a deeper connection with the environment. It’s a chance to truly unplug and enjoy the natural wonders that our state has to offer, right on our doorstep.

Location and Accessibility

The WMA Pearl River WMA Camp Grounds are situated at 41300-41398 Crawford Landing Rd, Slidell, LA 70461, USA. This location places the campground within the extensive Pearl River Wildlife Management Area, a significant natural preserve in Southeast Louisiana. For Louisiana residents, accessing this campground is relatively straightforward. It is located about 6 miles east of Slidell and approximately 1 mile east of the town of Pearl River. You can reach the WMA by vehicle from Old Hwy 11, and the specific campground at Crawford Landing is directly accessible via Crawford Landing Road. Several boat ramps are available along U.S. Hwy 90, with concrete ramps at Davis and Crawford Landings, all offering ample parking for those arriving by boat.

While the campground is easily accessible by car, its setting within a wildlife management area means it provides a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. Despite its proximity to major routes, the primary draw is the natural environment. One of the unique advantages of this location is its walking distance to swamp tours, as noted by visitors. This offers an incredible opportunity for campers to experience Louisiana's iconic bayous and observe its unique wildlife up close, making it more than just a camping spot but a true adventure hub. The area is known for its flat terrain and is subject to annual flooding, particularly during certain periods. Therefore, it's always advisable to check local guidelines and weather conditions with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) before planning your trip to ensure optimal accessibility and safety.

For Louisiana residents, there are specific fees and requirements:

This place is great. Mild highway noise, but otherwise peaceful and had no issue with other campers. Grab a Wild Louisiana stamp from walmart for less than $10 and enjoy 14 days boondocking here. One of the only spots to camp in the area in an RV that isn't a parking lot.

Awesome place. Stayed here a few nights doing hurricane relief. It's clean and there is a swamp tour within walking distance of the camp ground. Super cool.

Free for over-59 YOs (under 59 requires state hunting or fishing license). No assigned sites, just pick a shady spot under the beautiful live-oaks. A big pile of trash was left by one previous camping group. No source of water I could find; restrooms are two porta-potties. No picnic tables or fire rings. Very close to I-10; too loud for tent campers but may be tolerable for van or RV campers. A good deal for a solo, self-contained van-tripper like me.

Please be aware that this campground is only "free" if you obtain a Louisiana Wildlife permit (fishing, hunting, etc). If you don't have a permit you could receive a citation for camping here. It is patrolled by Louisiana Wildlife officers. This is especially true for non residents of Louisiana. I am only posting this to correct the other reviews that mention this as a free campground.

Decent for a pit stop only. Bathrooms nasty, cleaning schedule bi monthly. Constant highway noise right next to l 10. Pretty open field under big trees with Spanish moss makes it much better than a parking lot.
