Camp Ground Road Woods, located in Des Plaines, Illinois, is not a traditional overnight campground with designated campsites for tents or RVs. Instead, it is primarily a forest preserve area renowned for its extensive network of trails and natural beauty. It’s a place where you can "feel peace as soon as I walk in the door," as one visitor noted, highlighting its serene atmosphere. While its name might suggest camping facilities, its core identity is that of a natural oasis for day-use activities. The area is particularly celebrated for its "picturesque trails," including challenging mountain biking paths that create the illusion of being "deep in the woods without actually being far from civilization." This duality makes it an ideal spot for those who crave a significant nature experience that's still convenient for a local outing. It's a testament to the Forest Preserves of Cook County's efforts to provide vital green spaces for public enjoyment and conservation within the heavily populated Chicago metropolitan area.
Camp Ground Road Woods is conveniently located at 2001 Berry Ln, Des Plaines, IL 60018, USA. The location offers easy access from major roads and highways, facilitating quick trips for local outdoor enthusiasts. Importantly, Camp Ground Road Woods provides access to the extensive Des Plaines River Trail, a multi-use path that spans over 56 miles along the Des Plaines River corridor through various forest preserves in Lake and Cook Counties. This connection means that visitors can embark on longer excursions beyond the immediate bounds of Camp Ground Road Woods. While parking is available, some feedback suggests that parking areas might be hidden, and road crossings near the trails should be approached with caution due to traffic. Despite these minor considerations, its prime location offers a perfect balance of natural immersion and suburban convenience, allowing Illinois locals to easily integrate outdoor activities into their routines.
