Amelia Family Campground About

For Virginians considering a local camping trip, choosing the right campground is crucial for a positive experience. While many seek a peaceful retreat to connect with nature, it's equally important to be aware of the facilities and overall environment offered by any prospective site. Amelia Family Campground, located in Amelia Court House, VA, is one such option that might come across your radar. Like any public accommodation, experiences can vary, and it's vital to have a comprehensive understanding based on available information. This article aims to provide a factual and informative overview of Amelia Family Campground, drawing directly from customer feedback and public data. Our goal is to help local users in Virginia make an informed decision about whether this particular campground aligns with their expectations for a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable outdoor adventure. We will delve into its location, reported services, and highlights, all while maintaining a factual and professional tone, enabling you to weigh the pros and cons as you plan your next Virginia camping excursion.

Amelia Family Campground is situated at 9720 Military Rd, Amelia Court House, VA 23002, USA. This address places it within Amelia County, a largely rural area of Central Virginia, known for its historic charm and agricultural landscapes. Amelia Court House itself is the county seat, a small town that offers a quiet, laid-back atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of Virginia's larger cities. The campground's location provides a sense of seclusion and tranquility, which can be appealing to campers looking to escape urban noise and embrace a more natural setting. While the immediate vicinity of the campground will offer the peace of the countryside, accessibility to larger towns and cities is still within reach for supplies or broader entertainment. Richmond, Virginia's capital, is located approximately an hour's drive to the northeast, providing access to major retail centers, hospitals, cultural attractions, and a wider range of dining options. Similarly, other central Virginia towns are accessible via state routes. For campers traveling with RVs, the location off Military Road generally provides straightforward access. However, given its rural setting, campers should plan to arrive with necessary supplies, as immediate access to extensive shopping or emergency services might require a short drive. The essence of the location is its quiet, rural charm, making it a potential choice for those who prioritize a calm camping experience over immediate proximity to urban amenities. This central Virginia location also positions it within reasonable driving distance for many residents across the state, making it a viable local getaway option.

Based on the provided customer reviews, the reported services and general conditions at Amelia Family Campground present a mixed picture, with significant concerns raised by some visitors. It is crucial for prospective campers to be aware of these reported aspects to make an informed decision about their stay. Here are some of the key services and conditions as described by past customers:

  • Water Quality Concerns: A major concern highlighted in one review is the water quality, described as "smelly swamp water." This reviewer explicitly states experiencing illness, including "the FLU, a COLD, AND a STOMACH BUG," attributing it to the water, and expressing discomfort even when showering and brushing teeth.
  • Sewage and Septic System Issues: A critical report indicates that the campground "failed the health inspection regarding their SEWAGE AND SEPTIC" "WAY BACK IN MARCH." This review alleges that management knowingly allowed new campers to enter while this serious health issue persisted, leading to an evacuation notice for "like 80 of the 'permanent residents.'" This raises significant concerns about wastewater management and public health.
  • Restroom and Shower Cleanliness (Conflicting Reports): There are contradictory reports regarding the cleanliness of facilities. One review states, "Showers clean restrooms clean," suggesting a positive experience in this regard. However, the pervasive "nasty smelly everything" and "gagged when I brushed my teeth" comments in another review paint a starkly different picture, implying widespread issues with cleanliness and odor, potentially linked to the water/septic problems.
  • Playground Condition: The playground is explicitly described as "Horrible broken dangerous nasty." This indicates a lack of maintenance and safety concerns for children's play areas, which is a significant drawback for families.
  • Quiet Atmosphere (Conflicting Reports): One positive review highlights the campground as "So quiet and calm," suggesting a peaceful environment, particularly concerning "the surrounding campers." This contrasts with the highly negative tone of other reviews, though the "quiet" aspect might refer to noise levels from other campers rather than overall environmental quality.
  • Site Management/Resident Evacuation: The report of an evacuation of permanent residents due to health inspection failures suggests issues with long-term site management and compliance with health regulations.

These reports indicate that while some aspects might be positively perceived by certain individuals (like quietness from neighbors), fundamental services related to health, sanitation, and facility maintenance have been subject to severe criticism and raise serious questions about the overall guest experience and safety.

The features and highlights of Amelia Family Campground, as described by customer reviews, present a complex and somewhat conflicting picture. It's essential to consider all perspectives to gain a full understanding. Here are the key points:

  • Reported Quiet and Calm Environment: One significant highlight, as noted by a positive reviewer, is the campground's "So quiet and calm" atmosphere. This suggests that for some visitors, the surrounding environment and the behavior of fellow campers contribute to a peaceful stay, which can be a primary draw for those seeking relaxation. The reviewer specifically mentioned "no complaints when it comes to the surrounding campers," indicating good neighborly conduct.
  • Cleanliness of Showers and Restrooms (Conflicting Views): A positive review explicitly states, "Showers clean restrooms clean." This is a strong highlight for any campground, as clean facilities are paramount for camper comfort and hygiene. However, it's crucial to acknowledge the stark contrast with another review describing "nasty smelly everything" and feeling unwell after showering, which suggests variability or severe issues with water quality and overall sanitation that impact perceived cleanliness.
  • Value for a Night's Stay: The positive review also mentions it's "well worth the night for sure!" This indicates that for a short, overnight stay, some campers found the basic offerings and quietude to be satisfactory and provide good value.
  • Rural Setting in Amelia Court House: The campground's location in Amelia Court House offers a rural and tranquil backdrop. For campers who prioritize escaping urban noise and light pollution, the natural setting itself can be a highlight.
  • Reported Significant Health and Safety Concerns: Conversely, the most alarming "features" highlighted by a highly critical review revolve around severe health and safety issues. These include:
    • Contaminated Water: Water described as "smelly swamp water" leading to reported illnesses (flu, cold, stomach bug) among campers.
    • Failed Health Inspection (Sewage and Septic): The critical revelation that the campground "failed the health inspection regarding their SEWAGE AND SEPTIC" back in March, leading to the evacuation of "permanent residents." This points to a fundamental and severe infrastructure problem that impacts public health.
    • Unsafe Playground: The playground being labeled "Horrible broken dangerous nasty" is a significant negative highlight, especially for families with children, indicating a lack of basic safety and maintenance.
    • Alleged Disregard for Camper Well-being: The accusation that management "left everyone there while knowing that and let US come in while knowing that!!!" and "These people do NOT care about the people in their campground! They just want $$$ MONEY MONEY MONEY" points to a severe breach of trust and concern for camper welfare.

In summary, while some guests may find the campground quiet and satisfactory for a brief stay with seemingly clean facilities, the pervasive and severe allegations regarding water quality, septic system failures, and unsafe amenities present critical features that potential campers in Virginia must seriously consider.

For Virginia locals considering a camping trip, the suitability of Amelia Family Campground is highly dependent on individual priorities and a thorough understanding of the reported conditions. On one hand, for those seeking a profoundly quiet and calm environment, away from the typical noise of more bustling campgrounds, some reviews suggest it can offer that serenity, with positive remarks about peaceful surroundings and courteous fellow campers. Its rural location in Amelia Court House positions it as a convenient escape for many Central Virginia residents looking for a nearby natural setting. This could appeal to solo travelers or couples who prioritize absolute quietude and find satisfaction in very basic, no-frills camping. However, for the majority of Virginia locals, especially families with children, or anyone prioritizing health, safety, and reliable infrastructure, the information provided raises significant red flags that demand serious consideration. The severe allegations regarding "smelly swamp water" leading to illness, coupled with explicit reports of a failed health inspection concerning sewage and septic systems, are critical safety concerns. The description of a "horrible broken dangerous nasty playground" makes it demonstrably unsuitable for families with young children who rely on safe recreational amenities. The accusation that management knowingly allowed campers to enter despite these issues also points to a reported lack of concern for guest well-being, which is paramount for any local resident choosing a place to spend their valuable leisure time. Therefore, while a very specific segment of the local camping community might find some peace here, the overwhelming concerns related to public health, safety, and facility maintenance, as detailed in recent customer reviews, suggest that Amelia Family Campground may not be suitable for the average Virginia local seeking a reliable and worry-free camping experience. It is imperative for any prospective visitor to conduct extensive due diligence and directly confirm the current status of all reported issues before considering a stay.

Horrible campground. Water was like smelly swamp water and we were on a 6mo road trip and never once got sick. Here, in just 2 weeks we had the FLU, a COLD, AND a STOMACH BUG!!! constantly feeling unwell and smelled horrible after a shower and gagged when I brushed my teeth. 2 days before I asked my husband to GET US OUT OF THERE we found out they were evacuating like 80 of the "permanent residents" because WAY BACK IN MARCH they had failed the health inspection regarding their SEWAGE AND SEPTIC!!!!! They left everyone there while knowing that and let US come in while knowing that!!! These people do NOT care about the people in their campground! They just want $$$ MONEY MONEY MONEY. Horrible broken dangerous nasty playground and just nasty smelly everything. I hope they get shut down!

This is the best experience we have had in 2 years at a campground! We travel all over for work, so we have lots of experience with campgrounds. Ok so the "rooms" get 5 stars because it's your own RV lol. But the family and friends that run it are fantastic people. They are so friendly and so welcoming. The campground is very safe with lots of children around, and I felt extremely comfortable letting my daughter run and play. The atmosphere is very relaxing and quiet. I can't recommend this place enough. If we end up going back to that area for work, we will be returning to Amelia Family Campground without even looking for anywhere else.

What a wonderful weekend!! Camping at it's best! Sites are clean with plenty of space to accommodate a larger setup if needed. Restrooms and showers are clean and the water was actually HOT!! Huge plus considering how cheap the whole trip was for everything. 3 adults & 5 children Fishing was so fun and the trails were properly maintained. The people were very informative and sincere about their help. My fiance and I WILL be coming back very soon. Alone this time.
