Introduction / Overview
For Minnesota residents looking to plunge into the rugged, water-dominated landscape of the state's North Country without the challenge of a boat-in only site, the Ash River Campground offers an exceptional, accessible opportunity. Located in the heart of the Kabetogama State Forest, this charming and often-overlooked public campground is the quintessential base camp for exploring the nearby wonders of Voyageurs National Park.
Ash River Campground, managed by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), provides a classic, no-frills camping experience. It features primitive, drive-up sites that cater primarily to tent campers, car campers, and smaller RVs, positioning it as a convenient staging ground for larger adventures. Unlike the island-based campsites within Voyageurs National Park, you can drive directly to your site here, which is a major convenience for local families and weekend adventurers. The environment is dense with the Northern Minnesota forest character, offering a sense of seclusion and connection to nature that defines the state’s outdoor tradition.
While the setting is undeniably beautiful—located right on the Ash River—potential visitors should be prepared for a truly wild experience. Reviews from fellow campers indicate the sites are "close to primitive," featuring the necessary basics like clean, well-maintained composting toilets and nice fire rings. However, the wilderness setting means facing Mother Nature's less convenient aspects. One candid review warns future visitors: "Small campground with limited sites and tons of mosquitos. I didn’t want to believe the other reviews about the mosquitos but please do not take them lightly and heed their warning. They are relentless. We were going to stay for two nights but left early because we were covered in welts from the bugs." This emphasizes the need for proper gear, including bug repellent and head nets, during the peak summer season, confirming that this is an authentic Northern Minnesota wilderness stay.
Location and Accessibility
The Ash River Campground is officially situated near Orr, MN 55771, USA, deeply within the Kabetogama State Forest. Its strategic location is one of its most significant advantages for local users: it is practically a neighbor to the Ash River Visitor Center, which serves as a key gateway to the spectacular water-based activities of Voyageurs National Park.
Accessibility to the campground is straightforward via paved and well-maintained forest roads. Visitors coming from southern Minnesota typically travel north on US Highway 53 before taking the turn onto Ash River Road (County Road 126), a scenic drive that leads directly to the area. Because this is a drive-up campground, you can park your vehicle directly at or very near your campsite, which is a rare amenity in this lake country region where most camping within the National Park itself requires a boat.
The campground’s proximity to the water is excellent, lying adjacent to the Ash River public landing. This landing features a boat ramp, making it simple for local boat owners to launch their craft directly into the river, which then provides an easy idle to the vast waters of Kabetogama and Namakan Lakes, the main arteries of Voyageurs National Park. This seamless transition from car to campsite to water access makes Ash River Campground a logistics dream for Minnesotans planning fishing or touring excursions into the park.
Services Offered
Ash River Campground, being a State Forest facility, provides essential, well-maintained basic services tailored to the primitive camping experience. It operates on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning reservations are typically not accepted, which is a crucial detail for local users planning a trip, especially during peak season.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
Ash River Campground is an invaluable resource for Minnesotans, providing the most straightforward, drive-up entry point to the colossal beauty of the Voyageurs National Park area. While the area is known for its challenging mosquito season, this very factor—the ruggedness and the need for preparedness—is what appeals to the resilient Minnesota outdoor enthusiast. It is a genuine piece of the northern wild.
It is perfectly suited for locals because it serves as the essential, affordable staging area for exploring the huge water-based National Park. Instead of paying for a remote water taxi or facing the logistics of a boat-in only campsite, local families can drive in, set up their base camp quickly, and then launch their own boat (or a rental from a nearby resort) for a day of world-class fishing or exploring the hundreds of islands in the Kabetogama and Namakan lakes. For those who appreciate a quiet, grassroots camping experience and value accessibility to major wilderness attractions above five-star amenities, Ash River Campground is the pragmatic, authentic choice. It offers the familiar, basic comfort of a State Forest camp while providing a direct connection to Minnesota's most significant water-wilderness destination.
Just a beautiful place to stay on the river, cabins look fresh and cozy, yard well kept, docks maintained. A bit of an idle to get to Kabetogama.
Jul 08, 2025 · Kelly MooreSmall campground with limited sites and tons of mosquitos. I didn’t want to believe the other reviews about the mosquitos but please do not take them lightly and heed their warning. They are relentless. We were going to stay for two nights but left early because we were covered in welts from the bugs. There are two composting toilets that are clean and maintained very well and the fire rings are quite nice as well. No frills, close to primitive.
Aug 25, 2022 · Janna MSpent 3 nights there last half June. Large RV’s left for at least 3 days with no occupants. Apparently that’s how you reserve a site? Meanwhile travelers coming in have no place to stay. Generators running all night. Woodcutting at 7:00 AM
Jun 25, 2021 · Larry HokensonMy husband and his parents just arrived back from staying here for the weekend. IT IS RUSTIC>>>yet close to the cabins other family members were staying at. All in all they had an enjoyable time..thank you for being so close to the Lodge
