For New Hampshire residents looking to gather their entire extended family, scout troop, or hiking club for an unforgettable White Mountains experience, the Barnes Field Group Campground provides the perfect solution. Tucked away within the expansive White Mountain National Forest (WMNF) near the base of Mount Washington, this historic site is uniquely tailored for larger gatherings, offering generously sized campsites that truly set it apart from typical individual campgrounds. It is one of the few dedicated group camping facilities in the area, making it a highly valuable resource for local organizations and families seeking a shared adventure.
This facility, adjacent to the much larger Dolly Copp Campground, is organized on a field that was once farmed in the early 1900s, giving it a unique sense of history and an open, yet forested, feel. It successfully blends the rustic, essential services of WMNF camping with the necessary space and amenities required for a comfortable group stay. From accommodating a 75-person fishing camp to hosting multiple families splitting a single site, the feedback is consistent: Barnes Field offers tremendous value and space, acting as an exceptional launching point for all the recreational treasures of the northern White Mountains.
Whether you're planning a summer hiking blitz into the Presidential Range or seeking a quiet, first-come, first-served winter camping location, Barnes Field is a reliably spacious and well-maintained option for the discerning New Hampshire group organizer. Its convenience to major hiking trails and the nearby town of Gorham for resupply makes it a strategic choice for multi-day excursions.
Barnes Field Group Campground boasts a premier location approximately six miles south of the town of Gorham, New Hampshire, placing it directly at the foot of the magnificent Presidential Range. This prime positioning ensures excellent access to some of the most popular and challenging hikes in the entire Northeast, including trails leading into the Great Gulf Wilderness and towards the massive Mount Washington.
The campground’s physical address is on Dolly Copp Road, just off NH Route 16. This provides locals with a straightforward drive-in location, making it ideal for groups arriving in multiple vehicles, trailers, or even RVs, as many sites offer ample parking capacity.
Key Accessibility Points:

I went with a Tenkara fishing camp and it was a beautiful experience to come to this camp that was big enough to accommodate for 75 of us campers! We packed it out and it was cozy. We had enough space to do our fishing lessons in a large open field in the middle of the camp sites. The area (all around White Mountain) has tons of rivers and creeks that allowed us to all enjoy the fishing without feel overcrowded. Each camp site has 2 wooden tables and a fire pit, and there are also 2 sets of 2 bathrooms (4 toilets total) on two different opposite sides of the camp sites. The toilet paper was also always well stacked during the 4 days we were there. As well as the bear/raccoon trash bin was in the middle of the sites. I would say a very good option if you're in the area!
Jun 18, 2024 · Ashley HoffnerGreat for groups of 6+ people, or two families looking to share single sites, all have plenty of room. 1,2 & 7,8 are the smallest, estimated size of 30'x35' each. The rest of the sites are much larger, 50'x50' or larger. Camp features 2 double pit toilets buildings, camp keepers kept them clean. Plenty of parking at each site for 2+ vehicles or trailers, or RVs. A pump water station for filling up. No site provided electric. There is also a bear proof dumpster. Each site also had large picnic tables and large fireplaces with fold-over grill tops. Very quiet, no road noise and no light pollution, tons of stars at night. The camp does feature a small 100'x120' recreation field by the entrance for all campers use. Quick access to all of the hiking and river swimming spots and a 5 minutes drive to Mt Washington or Gorham for resupplies. Posted with pics of each site. 10 out of 10, recommended, Enjoy.
Sep 05, 2022 · Brian FoxVery quiet place with clean large group camping spots. Pump water and pit toilets only. We spent 3 nights in an RV. There is no dumping station, but there is one at the neighbor's campground that costs 5 $ for non registered guests.
Aug 27, 2025 · Claudie CoteHighly recommended. First come first serve off season. Honesty box with self registration. Toilets on the site with potable water from pump well. RV Sani / sewer dump and water available nearby.
Oct 17, 2023 · Francis ClarkeFantastic small place to camping, close to many hike spots. Note: it doesn't include the dog in the pics. Jeje
