Introduction / Overview
For New Jersey residents seeking a true escape from the hustle and bustle of the state's more populated areas, the Bodine Field Campground offers a compelling return to nature. Located deep within the expansive and historically rich Wharton State Forest in the heart of the storied Pine Barrens, this campground is a treasured destination for those who appreciate a more rustic, primitive camping experience. It’s a favorite among local tent campers, outdoor enthusiasts, and particularly those looking to launch a canoeing or kayaking trip down the picturesque Wading River. Bodine Field is known for its large, relatively flat sites and its dedication to preserving a simple, forest-focused environment.
Unlike heavily developed RV parks or amenity-rich family campgrounds, Bodine Field embraces simplicity, offering an atmosphere where the focus is firmly on the natural surroundings. It is one of the largest primitive camping areas within Wharton State Forest, providing a blend of open and more secluded sites scattered throughout a sandy field setting. This emphasis on natural, no-frills camping attracts New Jerseyans who want to disconnect from digital life and reconnect with the tranquility of the Pine Barrens, a unique ecosystem found nowhere else in the world. It’s an ideal spot for first-time primitive campers and seasoned veterans alike who are seeking a very reasonably priced gateway to the state’s largest protected wilderness area.
Location and Accessibility
Bodine Field Campground is situated in the south-central portion of New Jersey, placing it conveniently within a manageable drive for a large segment of the local population. The campground’s official address places it near the Hammonton area, a key entry point to the vast Wharton State Forest. Specifically, it can be found alongside the Wading River, making it a strategic location for water activities. Its remote nature within the forest is a large part of its appeal, though initial navigation can require attention, as its turn-off can be subtle.
The access to the campground is typically via unpaved dirt roads common to the Pine Barrens. While generally accessible by most conventional vehicles, visitors should be mindful of the loose, deep "sugar sand" in some areas within the campground itself, which is a signature feature of the region. Free-standing tents are often recommended due to the sandy ground. For those driving, the park’s main Batsto office—where permits are typically obtained—is located a short drive away, offering a central resource for directions and information before venturing to the more secluded campsite. The relatively central South Jersey location ensures that this Pine Barrens retreat is a convenient weekend getaway for residents from the Delaware Valley and points further north in the state.
Services Offered
True to its designation as a primitive campground, Bodine Field offers minimal, essential amenities designed to support a rustic outdoor experience. The focus is on providing necessary basic facilities without the luxuries of modern camping, ensuring the environmental integrity of the State Forest is maintained. This commitment to simple services keeps the costs low and the environment natural.
Features / Highlights
The defining features of Bodine Field Campground are inextricably linked to its location within the unique landscape of the Wharton State Forest and the Pinelands National Reserve. These highlights are what draw New Jersey's local outdoor community to this specific spot year after year.

Bodine Field Campground is exceptionally well-suited for New Jersey residents looking for an authentic and accessible natural retreat. For locals, this campground represents a vital opportunity to experience the unique ecological and historical character of the Pine Barrens—an area often overlooked but deeply cherished by those familiar with its quiet beauty. It offers an easy, affordable, and close-to-home option for true primitive camping that feels worlds away from the Garden State's urban sprawl.
The combination of its riverside location, access to the extensive trail network like the Batona Trail, and the availability of large group sites makes it a versatile choice for a weekend adventure. Whether you are a family looking to introduce children to tent camping, a group of friends planning a canoe trip down the Wading River, or a solo hiker seeking solitude, Bodine Field provides the perfect low-cost, high-value backdrop. I like bodine. Pit toilets are 50/50. I’ve never seen so many cockroaches in the wild. Also found a wolf spider covered in hundreds of babies. Would recommend.
Jul 12, 2025 · N ALarge, flat sites. But, there's a lot of sand so I would recommend using free-standing tents. Very reasonably priced, group sites available.
Sep 06, 2025 · I'm Notta GeekJust a big open space good for group camping . Had a fire to cook dinner . Wading River runs by the camp 🏕. We always have a good time there .
Apr 24, 2023 · philip martynPure, natural, serene beauty at it's best out here. Beautiful cedar water creek with swimming holes, rope swings and landings for canoes/kayaks. The best way to experience the NJ pine barrens 👍
Jun 24, 2020 · Kevin KBodine Field campground was the perfect camping stop before heading down to Cape May for vacation. Make sure you reserve a site on the park's website beforehand. This particular campground had a bit of a bumpy dirt road drive to get to it, so be conscious of your vehicles' abilities. The pit toilet was fairly clean and I liked the distance between campsites. There was a bit of trash in the firepit when I arrived and the fire pit looked like it was run over. But! I simply took the trash with me when I left and notified the park staff about the firepit and they informed maintenance would take care of it. Camp neighbors took a bit to quiet down, but I had some very restful sleep and enjoyed the NJ pine barrens. Would have loved to go for a swim in the river if I had the time. Check this place out!
