It's a place that, with the right expectations, can be a wonderful escape into the natural landscape that defines our beautiful state.
This location, recognized as "Boy Scout Camp," is more than just a name; it points to a history and a spirit of outdoor exploration. While it may not always boast the manicured perfection of a commercial RV park, its true value lies in its raw, untamed essence and its immediate connection to the St. Marys River. It’s a space where locals can truly embrace the Floridian wilderness, from paddling serene waters to enjoying a picnic with a riverside view. It caters to those who prioritize authentic outdoor experiences, offering a rustic charm that some more developed sites simply cannot replicate.

The accessibility of this particular spot is one of its strong suits. Situated right on the St. Marys River, it offers direct and easy access to the water, which is a major draw for kayakers, canoeists, and those with small john boats. The roads leading to the site are generally manageable, making it relatively easy to navigate with vehicles carrying gear or trailers for watercraft. Its location also means it’s not too far off the beaten path, allowing for quick resupply in Macclenny if needed, yet still providing that sought-after feeling of being away from it all. For Floridians looking for a quick nature fix without a lengthy journey, the Macclenny location is ideal.
While the Boy Scout Camp area might be described as a more rustic or informal camping spot, it does provide several essential services and facilities that enhance the visitor experience, especially for those utilizing the river access.
Well-Maintained Public Boat Ramp: This is a significant amenity for anyone looking to get out on the St. Marys River. The boat ramp is publicly accessible and reportedly well-maintained, allowing for easy launching of canoes, kayaks, and small john boats. This direct water access is a primary reason many locals frequent the area.
Shaded Parking: Ample shaded parking is available overlooking the St. Marys River, a welcome feature, especially during Florida’s warmer months. This makes it convenient for visitors to park their vehicles and prepare their watercraft or picnic gear without enduring direct sun exposure.
Picnic Pavilion: A dedicated picnic pavilion provides a covered area for groups to enjoy meals, offering protection from sun or light rain. This is ideal for family outings, small gatherings, or simply a shaded spot to relax and enjoy the riverside views.
Porta-Potties: Essential for any outdoor recreational area, porta-potties are available on-site, offering basic restroom facilities for visitors.
Open Meadow for Recreation: The presence of a nice meadow provides open space for various recreational activities, from tossing a frisbee to simply enjoying the expanse of nature.
Potential for RV/Tent Camping (with hookups): While some reviews indicate a need for maintenance in camping areas, there is mention of RV/tent camping with electric and water hookups, particularly near St. Marys Cove. This suggests that with prior inquiry or specific site selection, some level of traditional camping support might be available.
The natural features and recreational opportunities are the true highlights of the Boy Scout Camp area, making it a appealing destination for those who appreciate Florida's unique ecosystems.
Direct St. Marys River Access: The undeniable star of this location is its direct and easy access to the St. Marys River. This blackwater river, forming part of the border between Florida and Georgia, is renowned for its tranquil beauty and is perfect for paddling, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The ability to launch small boats directly from the site is a huge advantage for water sports enthusiasts.
Scenic Riverside Views: The location offers picturesque views of the St. Marys River, providing a serene backdrop for picnics, photography, or simply unwinding by the water. The natural setting creates a peaceful ambiance that’s hard to find in more urbanized areas.
Unmarked Trails Along the River’s Edge: For those who enjoy exploring on foot, the area features unmarked trails that lead to various spots along the river’s edge. These trails offer opportunities for quiet walks, birdwatching, and discovering hidden nooks of natural beauty. While not formally maintained, they provide an adventurous element for those willing to explore.
Excellent for Paddling: As highlighted by many, the location is particularly excellent for launching canoes, kayaks, and small john boats. The river here offers a gentle current, making it suitable for both experienced paddlers and those newer to the sport, allowing for leisurely excursions on the water.
Potential for Wildlife Sightings: Given its natural setting along a river, the area likely offers opportunities for observing various local wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and perhaps even some riverine mammals, enhancing the outdoor experience.
Natural, Rustic Environment: For those seeking an authentic outdoor experience away from overly manicured parks, the rustic nature of this location can be a significant draw. It offers a chance to experience Florida's wilderness in a less commercialized setting.
As Boy Scout Camp appears to function more as a public access point and potentially a rustic camping spot rather than a commercial campground with a regular booking system, formal promotions or special offers are not typically advertised. Given its informal nature, visitors should not expect traditional discounts or seasonal packages that might be found at privately-owned or larger state-run campgrounds.
However, the "special offer" of Boy Scout Camp lies in its inherent value: free public access to a well-maintained boat ramp and picnic facilities on the beautiful St. Marys River. The low-cost, or potentially free, access to these amenities is, in itself, a significant benefit for Floridians looking for affordable outdoor recreation.
For any specific inquiries regarding potential group use, event hosting, or the possibility of any special arrangements, it would be best to contact the relevant local authorities or organizations managing the property. Since this location is linked to Boy Scouts, there might be specific guidelines or reservation procedures for Scout groups, which may include special rates or access not available to the general public. For the average visitor, the primary "promotion" is the readily available and scenic river access.
Given the nature of "Boy Scout Camp" as described in the provided information, which points to it being a public access point with certain amenities rather than a commercial campground with a central booking office, direct contact information for a 'campground management' might be less straightforward than for a typical RV park. However, based on the address provided and the context of public access, here's the relevant information:
Address: St Marys Cove Rd, Macclenny, FL 32063, USA
For general inquiries about the public boat ramp and park facilities, or if you are looking to understand any local regulations for camping or usage, it would be advisable to contact the Baker County Parks and Recreation Department or the local county government offices, as they typically oversee such public amenities. While a direct phone number for "Boy Scout Camp" as a commercial entity isn't available, information related to the broader Boy Scouts of America North Florida Council might provide context for any organized Scout activities that take place in the area. For any specific questions regarding site availability for camping or other direct inquiries, seeking local information sources once on-site or contacting the Baker County Chamber of Commerce may yield further details.
For Floridians, the area known as Boy Scout Camp in Macclenny offers a genuine slice of natural Florida that is both accessible and invaluable for various outdoor pursuits. While some past feedback indicates areas for improvement in terms of maintenance and privacy for traditional camping, its core strengths make it particularly suitable for local residents. The immediate and well-maintained public boat ramp on the St. Marys River is a goldmine for anyone looking to paddle, fish, or simply enjoy the unique ecosystem of a blackwater river. This easy access to the water is a significant advantage for families, anglers, and adventurers who own canoes, kayaks, or small john boats and seek a convenient launch point.
Beyond the river, the shaded parking, picnic pavilion, and open meadow provide excellent facilities for day-use visitors. It’s an ideal spot for a spontaneous family picnic, a leisurely afternoon by the river, or a gathering with friends who share a love for the outdoors. The presence of unmarked trails offers an invitation to explore the natural surroundings on foot, allowing for birdwatching, photography, or simply a peaceful stroll amidst the trees. For locals, this means less travel time and more time enjoying nature.
In essence, Boy Scout Camp serves as a vital community asset for outdoor recreation in Baker County and beyond. While it might appeal more to the adventurous and self-sufficient camper than those seeking resort-style amenities, its direct connection to the St. Marys River and the fundamental facilities it provides make it a cornerstone for local outdoor life. It reminds us of the raw, unadulterated beauty that Florida offers and serves as a reminder that some of the best outdoor experiences are often found in places that prioritize natural access over manufactured luxury. For Floridians looking to connect with their state’s unique environment, Boy Scout Camp is a practical and appealing choice for getting back to basics.
Customer Reviews
Unfortunately, our visit to the Boy Scout camp was underwhelming. The place felt trashy and poorly maintained, with litter around some of the campsites and common areas. It lacked the natural charm and care you'd expect from a place meant for outdoor adventures. Privacy was another big letdown—sites were way too close together, and there wasn’t much in the way of trees or buffers to give you that quiet, tucked-away feeling. If you're looking for a peaceful, private camping experience, this probably isn’t it. Overall, it just didn’t live up to expectations. With a little cleanup and better site planning, it could be something special—but as it stands, we won’t be back.
There is a well maintained public boat ramp here with shaded parking overlooking the St.Mary's River, a pic-nic pavilion, porto-potties and a nice meadow for recreation. There are unmarked trails that lead various spots along the rivers edge as well. This is also an excellent place to launch canoes, kayaks and small john boats from!
love it here. great to bring kids and also have opened containers to chill and drink without having to worry about enforcement. play your music, relax in the sand or in grass with shade, float in the water.. all the above.
My son and I go there pretty much every day, it’s the best place to swim out here that I know of. Looking for places to go camping though without being bothered by the riffraff that show up at night time. I just don’t want to have my tent smashed in by a belligerent drunkards liquor bottle, Or have to fear for any of our lives due to reckless people waving guns around. Which I have heard of happening quite often, And don’t get me wrong I enjoy a little fear as much as the next guy, but these kids out here who Drink, have pretty high opinions of themselves. A drunk jit finds his place reaaaal quick.
A great place for picnics, family outings, swimming and boating on the St. Mary's River. White sandy beach with a sandy bottom. Fishing is great. A free boat ramp and parking.
