For seasoned New York campers and newcomers to the Adirondacks alike, Camp Whiteface Mountain, located in the scenic town of Wilmington, represents a welcome return to classic, 'no-frills' outdoor adventure. Situated just a stone's throw from the majestic Whiteface Mountain and a short drive from the historic village of Lake Placid, this campground has recently undergone significant renovation and reopened its gates, much to the delight of the local camping community.
Operating on the former grounds of a popular, long-standing Adirondack campground, Camp Whiteface Mountain has been thoughtfully refreshed to emphasize the core of the camping experience: clean, comfortable, and scenic sites surrounded by the towering pines and birch trees of the Adirondack Forest Preserve. It offers a crucial balance—full hookup convenience for the modern RV traveler, combined with a peaceful, shaded, and quiet atmosphere that many sought in the area’s original camping spots. Unlike larger resort-style facilities, the focus here is on providing a clean, accessible, and high-quality basecamp for exploring the world-class recreation found throughout the Whiteface Region. This spot is quickly re-establishing itself as the premier choice for New Yorkers prioritizing nature and location over excessive, distracting amenities.
Camp Whiteface Mountain boasts a prime location in the Adirondacks, placing campers minutes away from some of the region's most famous natural and Olympic-related attractions. Its address on Fox Farm Road in Wilmington, NY, positions it at the very foot of Whiteface Mountain, New York State's fifth-highest peak.
Accessibility is straightforward for both large RVs and passenger vehicles, though new visitors are advised to note the campground’s specific entrance details. The layout is well-designed, featuring wide, pull-through sites in the main RV area, but the entire park is surrounded by an abundance of mature trees, maintaining a necessary layer of seclusion and shade.

I arrived on a Thursday at about 4:55 p.m. (check in ends at 5). My paperwork was ready to go into the late check-in box, but the camp host was friendly and didn't act like she was in a hurry to close up shop. She even quickly filled out a second parking pass, as my wife would be joining me later that evening. I was in my site and setting up within 10 minutes. The site itself was neat and clean (pull through with full hookups). My only complaint would be that I couldn't pick a specific site when making reservations online, and they put me in the front row, right by the entrance to the campground. This might have been an oversight on my part, but I would have preferred the next row back to at least give the illusion of privacy. Speaking of which, I found out later that this campground had only recently reopened after some major renovations. My family and I had actually tent camped here about 15 years earlier under different ownership. As a "refreshed" older campground, there was an abundance of trees and the sites, while close, were farther apart than the glorified parking lots you get at many RV "resorts." No, this was not a resort. In fact, it was a very basic campground. There were no amenities like a playground or pool for the kiddos. There were two bathroom blocks, each with four very new and clean bathrooms (toilet, sink, and shower), and one toilet (and sink? I didn't peek in) back by the tent sites. I'm aware that I'll sound like a grumpy old man here, but I like the "no frills" aspects of Camp Whiteface Mountain, and I'd happily go back even after the promotional rates are long gone. Leave the pool and splash pads (and utter lack of shade) to the KOA down the street. I like my home base to be quiet and shady, just like this was.
Aug 30, 2025 · Tim BrownThis is the former Lake Placid whiteface mountain KOA on Fox Farm road. They just reopened a couple weeks ago and only the first 5 or so rows were available. Wi-Fi should be operational as of this writing but it wasn't while we were there. The layout of the campground is all still there but all cabins and other remnants of the old KOA are gone. Thankfully the glamping plan appears dead and over the next several years it will reemerge as a full KOA again. For now it's just RV and tent sites. RV sites have full hookups. No other amenities. I've gone to this location for over 40 years. It was sad when it closed - we were there on the last day of operation. It's bittersweet seeing it all cleared out but I'm optimistic it'll return to what it once was in terms of popularity and setting.
Jul 30, 2025 · Kristofer GiganteIt was a brand new campground so everything was in pristine condition but I wasn't aware the most of the campground wasn't set up yet and there was no WIFI setup like advertised which was one of the reasons I chose the campground. Outside of that little tiny issue, it was a great campground and I would recommend it to anyone coming up that direction. Also the lady in the office recommended the Twisted Raven for a place to eat. It was an AWESOME place to go! Food was excellent as was the live entertainment.
Jul 28, 2025 · Todd GraffGreat rustic campground in the middle of the Adirondacks. Our site had Water electric and sewers and the bathrooms were pristine. I believe they just reopened so hoping it stays like new. No pool or playground but didnt need one as the campground is next to one of the best natural swimming pools around in the Flume Gorge. Waterfalls, cliff jumping and natural waterslides, our 3 children 12, 11 and 7 absolutely loved it. You can walk to the flume from the campground or drive 2 minutes to a parking area. Walking will take you through the old aboned section of the KOA which was nostalgic for me as i remember camping there as a kid. Lots of other activities nearby like Whiteface mtn, Lake Placid, Saranac lake and others in between. Overall great experience.
Aug 13, 2025 · Mark PongonisNice campground. No wifi. It said on the website that there was but there is not. Bathrooms and showers were nice.
