Introduction / Overview
For New Yorkers seeking the quintessential Adirondack experience—where world-class recreation meets accessible camping—Wilmington Notch Campground stands out as an exceptional choice. Located strategically within the magnificent Adirondack Park, this New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) facility offers a blend of natural beauty and essential convenience, making it a reliable destination for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet in length. The campground is nestled in a scenic birch and pine grove, a landscape carved by glacial forces, lying directly at the base of the iconic Whiteface Mountain.
Wilmington Notch Campground, first established in 1926, provides 54 individual campsites. While some visitors note the sites are functional rather than deeply secluded, the major appeal is its unparalleled location, which serves as a central hub for the Tri-Lakes and High Peaks region. It’s a favorite among fishermen due to its adjacency to the West Branch of the Ausable River, famous for its trout-filled rapids. It is not designed as a luxury resort but as a robust and practical basecamp—a place to rest, refresh with a hot shower, and prepare for another day exploring the surrounding wilderness and Olympic history. The commitment here is to provide a clean, safe, and affordable starting point for your adventures, ensuring you spend less time worrying about logistics and more time on the trails or rivers.
The setting itself is inspiring, with the soaring slopes of Whiteface Mountain visible just across the river. This campground’s friendly, professional atmosphere and crucial amenities make it a top-tier option for New York families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize location and accessibility to major attractions. While one past reviewer noted some frustration with the firewood and absence of a specific service like ice, the core infrastructure—clean bathrooms, hot showers, and a dump station—remain strong reasons why many return year after year.

Its location is strategically perfect: a short drive to the cultural highlights of Lake Placid and directly connected to the boundless recreational opportunities of Whiteface Mountain and the Ausable River. It offers the practical amenities—hot showers, flush toilets, and a trailer dump station—that make camping comfortable for families and RV owners, without losing the rugged feel of a state park. This campground provides the necessary base for deep dives into hiking, fishing, and mountain biking across the High Peaks region. We've come here for camping 4 years in a row. The location is perfect for what we do. The camp sites are about average at best. No hookups of any kind. They really need to rake the grounds more regularly. And it would be great if they had some ash buckets. Not full sized trash cans. I wonder if the care takers ever camped in their life? The good thing was that they offered ice and wood. That makes the cramped camp ground more useful. I don't have to go out for anything. But they stopped selling ice. And the wood is soaked. You need a flamethrower to light it. We'll likely be trying a new spot next year as a result. For the fee, there needs to be something you offer.
Jul 20, 2025 · Henry McCartyIt's got bathrooms, showers, and is conveniently located only a short distance from Lake Placid. Only gripes are that the campsites could be a bit more secluded, and it could be farther back from the road. Overall pleased though.
Sep 12, 2025 · Jared DavisThis was our first time at this campground. We loved it. Bathrooms were clean. People were friendly if we get up for that part of New York. We will certainly stay there again. You have to go see the waterfalls down the hill.
Aug 22, 2025 · Dave GeorgeWe enjoyed our stay here while vacationing in the Lake Placid area. It was close to the Whiteface region as well as Lake Placid attractions. On the first night there were tent campers in a site directly behind us which felt like we were sharing the same "backyard" (we were at site 42, they were at site 39). When we booked our reservation in December, site 39 was next to the bathhouse but it looks like they are cutting down some trees in that section now so site 39 has been moved. I think it made the both of us feel uncomfortable because they ended up moving their picnic table and we positioned all our equipment to be away from them too. That was the only downside of our trip. The bathrooms were clean. Although it is right along a busy road, it gets quiet enough in the late night hours for sleeping. We would recommend staying here!
Jun 30, 2025 · Lynds FraserThis was a really nice state campground kept clean. While were there leading into 4th of July all the campers and staff were so friendly. Nice hike down to waterfalls with a nice flat hike along going up the river with a few easy boulder access to the river.
