Introduction / Overview
For our valued service members, veterans, and affiliated DoD personnel residing in or visiting the Ocean State, Carr Point Recreation RV Park stands as a unique and highly desirable destination. Located within a U.S. Military Installation in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, this facility offers an exclusive opportunity for authorized users to camp in one of the most scenic areas of New England. It provides a peaceful, basic, yet incredibly beautiful waterside retreat with unmatched views of the harbor and surrounding islands.
It is important for Rhode Island-based users to note the current status of the park: the Carr Point RV Park is currently closed for major renovations. This closure is temporary, and prospective visitors are encouraged to check the official Navy MWR Newport website for the latest updates on its re-opening date. While the full amenity schedule is being restored, the value proposition remains clear: a clean, quiet, and exceptionally located basecamp for exploring the Newport area at an unbeatable price point for eligible guests. Even with limited amenities, the spacious sites, easy accessibility, and stunning sunsets—as consistently praised by previous guests—make it a perfect fit for a quiet, low-key RV getaway, provided guests are prepared for a rustic experience, especially regarding utilities.
Location and Accessibility
Carr Point Recreation RV Park is situated on the Defense Highway in Portsmouth, RI 02871, USA. Its location is a primary selling point, especially for those seeking to explore the renowned Aquidneck Island and the historic city of Newport.
The RV park is strategically located in the northern section of Aquidneck Island, offering quick and easy access to major local attractions. Downtown Newport, famous for its opulent Gilded Age mansions like The Breakers, its bustling wharves, and the scenic Cliff Walk, is just a short 20-minute drive away. This proximity allows local service members and their families to easily enjoy world-class dining, shopping, and historical tours without long commutes. Furthermore, the location within a military installation provides an added layer of security and convenience for base access. The facility itself is part of the larger Carr Point Recreation Area, which offers other reservable amenities like pavilions, making it a comprehensive spot for authorized DoD community members to host gatherings and picnics with commanding water views.
Services Offered
Carr Point RV Park operates as a 'FamCamp' focused on core RV necessities and a peaceful environment, though amenities are considered basic, and some services have historically been intermittent or unavailable.
Features / Highlights
Despite its basic amenities, Carr Point RV Park is celebrated by its users for its distinct and valuable features that elevate the camping experience for the military community in Rhode Island.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For the military community residing in Rhode Island, Carr Point Recreation RV Park is suitable precisely because of its exclusive nature and unparalleled value in a high-demand area. It offers a secure, peaceful, and visually spectacular waterfront setting that simply cannot be matched by most local civilian campgrounds at a comparable price for authorized users. Locals appreciate the easy access to the region’s best attractions—from the mansions to the beaches—making it the ultimate staycation or weekend getaway location without the financial strain typical of Newport accommodations.
While the basic amenities require some self-sufficiency (generator, planning for dumping), the trade-off is a spacious, quiet site right on the water, offering perfect sunsets and an escape from the city. Its small size guarantees a peaceful experience, and the connection to the military community provides a familiar and welcoming atmosphere. For eligible Rhode Island residents with an RV, Carr Point is not just an RV park; it’s an exclusive, high-value amenity that brings the beauty and history of the Newport area right to their doorstep.

Our stay was perfect! Site was clean (although the trash was full) and spacious! Easy access, quiet, beautiful sunset and a nice easy bike ride to Newport! Sites have electric, water and picnic table, close and clean portapotty too. We’ll be back!
Oct 22, 2024 · AandL WilletteI liked the area, the large lots right on the beach only to be superstructure by a fence and shells galore. Lots of grass, great for dogs. Ok I stayed 2 weeks I think or close to that paid 30 nightly for nothing but water so just be prepared no electricity or sewed, the electricity has been non- operational for some time. Bummer... But if you have a generator and tons of fuel you're good👍 Not to mention it's really windy.
Jul 19, 2023 · Gretchen LeeI am rating it for what it claims it is and what it is. This is not a famcam, there are no bathrooms, showers that type of thing, just an outhouse. It does have electricity and water as well as a picnic table. It is very basic but very quiet and has a beautiful view. We love it!
Oct 15, 2023 · Gail WagnerUpsides--Quiet, clean, great view. Downsides--No bathhouse (does have an outhouse), no shower, no sewer hookup, no dump station (told to go to another campground and use their's for a fee), no handicapped site, and the office is over 5 miles away. Hint to management--not all campers have toilets and showers and there are a lot of disabled people who camp.
Jun 29, 2019 · Burt HillBoat ramp is nice and wide. Very steep and has some big hole in the ramp itself. But was able to launch our 32' pontoon boat. People still park in the NN parking area in front of the ramp.
