Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground About

Kentucky, with its stunning natural beauty, from the majestic mountains of Appalachia to the serene winding rivers, offers countless opportunities for outdoor adventure and relaxation. For those seeking a unique camping experience that blends rustic charm with essential amenities and a connection to nature, Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground in Williamsburg stands as an interesting option. This campground caters to a variety of preferences, from shaded riverfront tent camping to RV sites with hookups, providing a flexible base for exploring the rich landscapes of Southern Kentucky.

Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground is located at 1901 River Rd, Williamsburg, KY 40769. Its name and address hint at a prime location alongside a river, offering picturesque views and direct access to water. Reviews from real customers offer a comprehensive look at what to expect. While one review points out challenges for large groups, especially during wet weather, noting that "only 2 of the 6 sites were usable" and recommending "tent platforms if rain within 7 days turns the entire campground into a mud pit," another detailed review paints a more nuanced picture. This extensive review highlights the campground's distinct areas: "Upper campsites" with "Room for 5 campers/RVs with hook ups" and "No real shade though for the campers," and "Lower/riverfront campsites" that are "Very shaded area with riverfront view" with "at least 8 possible tent sites." The amenities include "Toilet plus shower in grey building," a "Standalone toilet room & standalone shower room," and "Vending machine." Firewood can be purchased and delivered, and "Farm fresh eggs" are available. Two "resident cats" are also noted for keeping campers company! While the road to the lower sites is described as "rough and bumpy with ruts," the overall sentiment for many is that camping here is "quiet and peaceful," making it a promising option for Kentuckians seeking a tranquil retreat, especially for smaller groups or those prepared for a rustic experience.

Location and Accessibility

Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground is located at 1901 River Rd, Williamsburg, KY 40769, USA. This address places it squarely in Williamsburg, the county seat of Whitley County in Southern Kentucky. This region is known for its proximity to numerous natural attractions, including the Daniel Boone National Forest, Cumberland Falls State Resort Park (often called the "Niagara of the South"), and Laurel River Lake. The "River Rd" in the address strongly suggests a direct connection to a local river, offering scenic views and potential for water access.

Accessibility to the campground from various parts of Kentucky is generally good, as Williamsburg is directly off Interstate 75 (I-75), a major north-south artery running through the state. This makes it a relatively easy drive for locals coming from Lexington, Louisville, or even Knoxville, Tennessee, which is "not that far" as one reviewer noted. Once off I-75, the drive to the campground will involve local roads. The detailed review explicitly states: "Road leading to the lower riverfront campsites is rough and bumpy with ruts, so take your time traveling this road in both directions." This is an important detail for those with lower-clearance vehicles or large RVs heading to the riverfront area. However, the upper campsites are more easily accessible. The proximity to the town of Williamsburg means campers have convenient access to amenities like "fast food, shopping, coffee shop, visitor center," including stores like IGA, Walmart, Dollar Tree, and various dining options, providing essential supplies and conveniences just a few minutes away. A "Waterpark within a few minutes from campsite" also adds to its family appeal.

Services Offered

Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground offers a range of services designed to accommodate various camping styles, from RVs to primitive tent camping, focusing on essential needs and a peaceful environment.

  • RV Campsites with Hookups: The "Upper campsites" provide "Room for 5 campers/RVs with hook ups," indicating availability of electric and potentially water connections for RVs.

  • Tent Campsites (Upper & Riverfront): The campground offers both upper tent sites, some with "several trees grouped together for shade," and numerous "Very shaded area with riverfront view" tent sites down by the river.

  • Restroom Facilities: The campground provides multiple options for restrooms, including a "Toilet plus shower in grey building," a "Standalone toilet room & standalone shower room next to each other," and a "port-a-potty only" at the riverfront camping area.

  • Shower Facilities: Both a combined "Toilet plus shower" building and a "standalone shower room" are available, offering campers the convenience of hot showers.

  • Vending Machine: A "Vending machine in shed near bath facility on corner of property" offers quick access to snacks or drinks.

  • Firewood for Purchase: "Firewood can be purchased by the wheelbarrow for only $15 & is delivered to your site," providing a convenient way to enjoy campfires without bringing your own wood.

  • Farm Fresh Eggs: A unique and charming service, "Farm fresh eggs available for $3-$4, text host," offering a taste of local produce.

  • Trash Disposal: "Two large community garbage cans" are located at the driveway intersection, and some tent sites have "a large trash barrel," providing convenient waste disposal options.

Features / Highlights

Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground boasts several distinctive features and highlights that contribute to its unique camping appeal in Kentucky, catering to a specific type of outdoor enthusiast.

  • Diverse Camping Zones: The campground is notable for its distinct upper RV/cabin area and lower riverfront tent camping zones. The "Very shaded area with riverfront view" for tent sites is a significant draw, offering a more immersive natural experience.

  • Shade Availability: While upper RV sites lack shade, the riverfront tent sites are explicitly described as "Very shaded area," a crucial feature for comfort during warmer Kentucky months. Some upper tent sites also offer shade.

  • Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Consistently highlighted, the "Overall camping here is quiet and peaceful," despite the sounds of "rural living; dogs barking, roosters crowing, etc." This makes it ideal for those seeking tranquility.

  • Access to the River: Given its location on "River Rd" and the presence of riverfront sites, direct access to the river is a major highlight for fishing, wading, or simply enjoying the water views.

  • Farm-Fresh Offerings: The availability of "Farm fresh eggs" for purchase directly from the host adds a charming, local touch to the camping experience.

  • Friendly Resident Animals: The presence of "Two resident cats... very well behaved and only requested scratches and pets" adds a unique and endearing element to the campground's character, especially for animal lovers.

  • Proximity to Local Amenities: The campground is conveniently located near the town of Williamsburg, providing easy access to "fast food, shopping, coffee shop, visitor center," including a Walmart, Dollar Tree, and various eateries. A nearby "produce stand" is also a plus.

  • Close to Major Attractions: Being within a few minutes of a "Waterpark" and offering "easy access to nearby state parks" (like Cumberland Falls and Laurel River Lake areas) significantly broadens the recreational opportunities for campers. The short distance to Tennessee also opens up further exploration.

  • Firewood Delivery: The convenience of having firewood delivered to your site for a reasonable fee is a practical and appreciated feature.

Promotions or Special Offers

Given the detailed and personal nature of the reviews, which highlight direct interaction with the host and unique offerings like farm-fresh eggs and firewood delivery, Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground likely operates with a flexible approach to pricing and special arrangements rather than formalized, widely advertised promotions. However, based on the services and features, potential "offers" for campers might include:

  • Group Booking Flexibility: While one review mentioned challenges for large groups in wet weather, the ability to "rented the whole side of the river for a large group" indicates that the campground does accommodate large group bookings, which might come with specific arrangements or negotiated rates depending on the season and duration.

  • Extended Stay Discounts: Campgrounds often offer reduced rates for longer stays (e.g., weekly or monthly), which might be something to inquire about if planning a longer retreat.

  • Off-Season Rates: During the quieter times of the year, there might be lower rates available, though the specific operating season is not provided.

  • Value-Added Services (Implied): The availability of firewood delivery and farm-fresh eggs at a reasonable price acts as a value-added "offer," enhancing the convenience and experience without necessarily being a direct discount on the site fee.

The best way to learn about any potential special offers, group rates, or specific pricing structures is to directly contact Clayton Geneva Memorial Campground using the provided phone numbers. Given the detailed review about the host, it implies a direct line of communication for booking and inquiries.

This site looks great for small groups in only favorable weather, but we rented the whole side of the river for a large group and only 2 of the 6 sites were usable. I would suggest putting in some tent platforms if rain within 7 days turns the entire campground into a mud pit. We ended up finding another place to camp in the area thankfully, but I can’t recommend this campsite to large groups or if there is rain in the radar within 2 weeks of your camping trip. The sites were not kept up and the host was unwilling to work with us on more suitable accommodations for our group size.

June 2024 Upper campsites: -Room for 5 campers/RVs with hook ups. No real shade though for the campers. -Birdsong Cabin is also located.on this level. -Two tent sites to the right upon entry. One has several trees grouped together for shade These are just to the right before the driveway intersects. (Turn left to RV camping. Turn right and down the hill into the woods takes you to riverfront camping). One of the tent sites has a large trash barrel; bring your own big black garbage bags. There are 3 large community garbage cans you can place your trash bags in; these are located at the driveway intersection when you first come in. Two resident cats kept us company; we affectionately called them Kitty & Boy. They were both very well behaved and only requested scratches and pets. Lower/riverfront campsites: Road leading to the lower riverfront campsites is rough and bumpy with ruts, so take your time traveling this road in both directions. Very shaded area with riverfront view. -I counted at least 8 possible tent sites,  possibly more. Campground amenities: -Toilet plus shower in grey building next to "The Groomer" building. -Standalone toilet room & standalone shower room next to each other in corner of property. They look like sheds, see photo. -Vending machine in shed near bath facility on corner of property. -Riverfront camping has a port-a-potty only, no showers. -Firewood can be purchased by the wheelbarrow for only $15 & is delivered to your site. -Farm fresh eggs available for $3-$4, text host. Town of Williamsburg is nearby for fast food, shopping, coffee shop, visitor center. (IGA, Walmart, Dollar Tree, Bourbon Barn, Burger King, McDonald's, The Coffee Spot, to name a few. There is a little produce stand down the road from the campsite, toward Williamsburg). Waterpark within a few minutes from campsite. Overall camping here is quiet and peaceful. Evenings you can hear the cacophony of rural living; dogs barking, roosters crowing, etc. Access to nearby state parks is easy. Tennessee isn't that far. If you deem this review helpful please give it a 👍.

If you’re in need of a place to camp, give this wonderful lady your money lol I had been to 10 different camp sites because none of them would answer the phone. I found Clayton on accident trying to go to another camp and I’m so glad I did. She was so nice and caring, she answered the phone right away even though it was 6am. And actually got out of bed to come let me stay, which is beyond kind given the time. The place is beautiful and peaceful down on the river. I will definitely be coming back again soon!

Check HipCamp for full review, but this is a beautiful campground along the Cumberland River. The staff was nice and welcoming.

Amber and her cabins are amazing! I personally have stayed there several times over the last year. I am not a fan of primitive camping so I don’t. The Birdsong cabin is my favorite. Super clean, super comfy and super relaxing. We stayed in the covered wagon this weekend and that was also a great adventure! Looking forward to going back!
