Introduction / Overview
Cleary Lake Regional Park Campground, situated in Prior Lake, Minnesota, offers a unique and appealing camping experience within the expansive Cleary Lake Regional Park. Managed by the Three Rivers Park District, this campground is celebrated for its quiet atmosphere and convenient access to a wide array of recreational activities. Unlike larger, sprawling campgrounds, Cleary Lake provides a more intimate setting, making it particularly attractive to those seeking a sense of privacy and seclusion, even while being remarkably close to the Twin Cities metropolitan area.
The campground offers diverse camping options, including dedicated tent-only sites, two well-equipped RV sites with full hookups, and three spacious group campsites, accommodating various camping styles and group sizes. RV campers have noted the unique "pull-through" design of the concrete pads, which are generously sized and include essential amenities like fire pits and trash cans. This design, while initially seeming "a little tricky," ultimately contributes to a feeling of having "the whole place to ourselves," enhancing the overall tranquility.
Beyond the immediate camping area, the regional park itself is a hub of activity. Visitors can enjoy a picturesque 3-mile paved trail system encircling Cleary Lake, perfect for walking, running, and biking. The park also boasts a public golf course, opportunities for non-motorized water sports on the lake (with rentals available for kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, and paddle boats), and designated areas for fishing and even swimming at a designated beach. While the lake's water quality has been noted as sometimes being weedy, silty, and green-colored, it still supports fishing, and the various recreational options ensure there's always something to do. Cleary Lake Regional Park Campground is highly recommended for Minnesotans seeking a convenient, quiet, and amenity-rich camping spot near the Twin Cities, offering a comprehensive outdoor experience that goes beyond just camping.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
For us Minnesotans, Cleary Lake Regional Park Campground truly stands out as an exceptionally suitable and highly recommended destination, offering a perfect blend of natural escape and convenient access right here in the Twin Cities metro area. Its unique combination of amenities and serene atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts.
One of the most compelling reasons for its suitability is its proximity. We love our lakes and parks, but often, getting to a secluded spot means a long drive. Cleary Lake offers a genuine "camping spot near the Twin Cities" where you can transition from city life to nature in a short amount of time, saving on travel and maximizing your relaxation. Despite this proximity, the campground maintains a surprisingly "quiet" atmosphere, and with only two RV spots (alongside tent and group sites), it often feels like you "practically had the whole place to yourselves," as one happy camper noted. This sense of privacy is a major draw for those seeking true tranquility.
Beyond just camping, the park itself is a hub of activity. The "lovely and easy" paved trail system encircling Cleary Lake is perfect for our love of biking, walking, and running, offering beautiful views along the way. The availability of watercraft rentals for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards directly at the lake means you can easily get out on the water and enjoy our state's iconic lakes, even if you don't own your own equipment. And for those who enjoy a round of golf, having a public course attached to the park adds another fantastic recreational dimension, all within walking distance of your campsite.
While the lake might be "weedy and full of silt" at times, it still offers fishing opportunities and a designated swimming beach, providing various ways to engage with the water. The spacious concrete RV pads with fire pits and trash cans, along with a large grassy field for kids and pets, demonstrate the park's commitment to comfortable and enjoyable stays. Cleary Lake Regional Park Campground truly delivers on its promise of a comprehensive, convenient, and calming outdoor experience for every Minnesotan looking for a local adventure.

We RV camped here for two nights. We camped at RV Site Two. I included a picture from our vantage point and a picture of an empty RV Site One. We really enjoyed our stay. At first it seemed a little weird to have only two RV spots, but we ended up really liking it. We practically had the whole place to ourselves! It was a little tricky getting the camper in. At first we backed it in, but realized the hookups were on the other side. You have to pull straight thru like a pull-in spot, but to get out you either have to back up awkwardly or just pull thru the other Rv spot (if it’s empty). The pad is concrete and very spacious for tables and chairs. It has a fire pit and trash cans. It’s super close to the trail around the lake and the visitors center. It’s also near where you can rent kayaks or canoes. There’s a large grassy field behind the camp site that’s great for playing with kids or letting your pet explore. For my review, I’m only commenting on the camping. We only did the bike trail around the lake (it was lovely and easy), so I can’t say much else for the actual park. It is pretty with the lake and has great views. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for a camping spot near the Twin Cities.
Aug 11, 2024 · Carrie ClinardQuiet Regional Park. A good lake for kayak, canoe, paddle board, or any other non motorized water sports activities. The drawback is the lake is very weedy and full of silt. You will find the water is of a green color most of the time. FISHING: You can fish and while the water is full of sediment, there is a beach. CAMPIMG: Overnight camping is allowed. There are spots for Tents or a camper for reservation. WATER SPORTS: Rentals are available for: Kayaks, Canoues, Paddle Boards, and Paddle boats. WEDDINGS: There are shelters where a wedding can be held. GOLF: There is a public golf course attach to the park. TRAILS: There is a paved trail system that encircle the lake. It is almost 3 miles around. Walking or bicycle riding is allowed on the trails.
Jul 30, 2022 · David Fletcher (RegNeoJazz)Not one who likes leaving 1 star reviews, but I've been staying at the campground for a few days now. I called the visitors center and asked if I could have a packaged shipped there as I'm staying here for work and they said yes. I then overnighted a package here, to when it arrived, the visitors center refused the package and called me to tell me they can't do that. Then why did you tell me yes yesterday? Maybe you could've made this one exception instead of costing me all this shipping money.
Jun 03, 2025 · Alek CunninghamGreat camping/fishing. Basswood areas 1-10 are in a pine forest. Basswood 11+ is in a deeper wooded area next to the lake with easy access to the powered ramada. Whitepine areas are more sunny and open and have drive-up access. 4-5 good fishing spots (that I know of), though some are rented out with specific sites. Lots of trails, golfing, park and beach area.
Sep 26, 2022 · Andrew JohnsonWe camped at RV site #2 all week. Although there are only 2 RV sites, they are both large and spacious. Great evening shade, great bike trails, a shallow beach area and paddle boats/canoes for rent. Our granddaughters were camping with us (13 & 8). It was quiet and lovely. The only set back is that it has latrines and not flush toilets. But our site had full hookups, therefore not needed. A wonderful hidden gem in MN!!!!
