This level of personal touch and helpfulness often transforms a simple stay into a truly memorable part of a journey.

What makes an RV park truly excellent often goes beyond just the physical amenities; it's about the atmosphere and the feeling of welcome. Elk River Camp and RV, with its reported "friendly and hospitable" owner and "quiet, right on the river" setting, seems to cultivate precisely this kind of environment. For many RVers, especially those on longer trips, knowing they can arrive late and still receive guidance and support is incredibly valuable. The emphasis on being "dog friendly" further broadens its appeal, as more and more travelers bring their furry companions along for the ride.

While the park is described as being well-suited for "long term seasonal sites," it also clearly excels as an overnight haven. This versatility makes it a practical choice for a wide range of needs. Understanding the specifics of its site setup and amenities, such as the requirement for a pressure regulator or the positioning of hookups, can help ensure a smooth arrival and stay. Our goal here is to provide a comprehensive and balanced overview of Elk River Camp and RV, drawing from the positive experiences of real customers to give you a realistic and enticing picture of what awaits you in Gassaway.

Elk River Camp and RV is conveniently located right off I-79 in Gassaway, WV, with the address specified as: I 79 Exit 62, Turn Right at the Exit; Follow Signs To Park, Gassaway, WV 26624, USA. This highly accessible location is one of its most significant advantages.

Its direct proximity to I-79, one of West Virginia's primary north-south interstate highways, makes it an ideal stop for travelers. As noted by reviewers, it's perfect for an "overnight stay the night on our return trip home," allowing for easy exit and re-entry to the highway. The clear directions provided by the owner, Mark, even for late-night arrivals ("help guide us on the phone the campsite"), further enhance its accessibility and ease of use for those passing through.

Gassaway, while a smaller community, offers essential services for campers. While not explicitly detailed, local amenities like gas stations, convenience stores, and perhaps a few local eateries would typically be found in such a location, providing necessary supplies without a lengthy detour. The campground's location "right on the river" (Elk River) provides natural accessibility for water-based activities like fishing, kayaking, and simply enjoying the peaceful sounds of the flowing water. This river access significantly enhances the recreational opportunities directly from the campsite.

Furthermore, for those looking to explore more of central West Virginia, the I-79 corridor connects to various state parks, hiking trails, and other outdoor attractions. While Elk River Camp and RV focuses on providing a peaceful and convenient base, its location allows for day trips to explore the natural beauty and charm of the surrounding region. The combination of interstate proximity and riverside tranquility makes it a strategically located choice for diverse travel needs within West Virginia.

Based on customer reviews, Elk River Camp and RV offers a streamlined set of services designed for comfort and convenience:

  • RV Campsites: Primarily caters to RVs, with "gravel and level" sites, providing a stable foundation for parking.
  • Full Hookups (Electric and Water): Sites are equipped with "electric and water hookups," with the crucial note that "pressure regulator is required!" for water hookups. Some sites also appear to have sewer, as inferred by the comment about hookups being at the back of some sites.
  • Picnic Tables: Provided at sites for outdoor dining and relaxation.
  • Fire Pits: Sites come with "what appeared to be two fire pits," enhancing the traditional camping experience.
  • Large Pavilions (at select sites): One reviewer's site included a "large pavilion adorned with LED string lights," suggesting a unique amenity for certain spots.
  • Friendly and Responsive Owner/Management: Mark is consistently praised for being "friendly, helpful and informative," and "most hospitable," even taking late-night calls to guide campers to their sites.
  • Dog Friendly: Explicitly mentioned as "dog friendly," appealing to travelers with pets.
  • Quiet Atmosphere: The campground is described as "quiet," contributing to a peaceful night's rest.
  • Escorted to Site: Guests are "escorted to the second loop to a campsite," providing a personal touch upon arrival.

It is important to note that reviewers did not explicitly mention a bathhouse or restroom facility, suggesting campers should plan to be self-contained or inquire directly. Also, the comment about "hookups located to the BACK OF THE SITE rather than closer to the middle" for some sites is a practical consideration for those with shorter utility lines.

Elk River Camp and RV distinguishes itself with several key features and highlights that consistently impress visitors:

  • Exceptional Owner Hospitality: This is by far the most emphasized highlight. Mark is repeatedly described as "amazing," "the friendliest and most hospitable stranger," going "above and beyond" to help, even for late-night arrivals. His personal guidance and friendly demeanor create an incredibly welcoming experience.
  • Convenient I-79 Access: Its location right off I-79 Exit 62 makes it an "easy" and ideal "overnight stop" for travelers, minimizing travel time and stress.
  • Peaceful Riverside Setting: The campground is "right on the river," offering a "beautiful little spot" and a "quiet" atmosphere, perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature's sounds.
  • Well-Maintained Sites: Sites are described as "clean, quiet" and "gravel and level," indicating attention to basic upkeep and ease of setup for RVs.
  • Thoughtful Site Amenities: The inclusion of picnic tables and fire pits at sites are standard but appreciated features. The "large pavilion adorned with LED string lights" at one reviewer's site suggests unique, appealing touches.
  • Affordable Pricing: Described as "super reasonable price," offering good value for the services and experience provided.
  • Dog Friendly: Welcoming to pets, which is a major benefit for many RV travelers.

A few practical considerations noted by reviewers include:

  • Lack of explicit bathhouse/restroom facility noted by one overnight guest. Prospective campers should confirm if this is available for their needs, especially if they are not fully self-contained.
  • Some sites have "hookups located to the BACK OF THE SITE rather than closer to the middle," which might require "extra sewer hoses and a 50amp to 30 amp adapter" depending on your rig's setup.
  • Trash disposal system: A suggestion was made for a central "dumpster" instead of "trash cans distributed throughout this loop" for easier waste management.

These minor points are overshadowed by the overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding the owner's hospitality and the peaceful environment.

Specific, current promotions or special offers for Elk River Camp and RV are not detailed in the provided customer reviews. As a highly hospitable and reasonably priced RV park, it may focus more on consistent value rather than frequent, public promotions. However, similar RV parks often offer:

  • Longer-stay discounts: Given that some sites appear to be set up for "long term seasonal sites," there might be reduced rates for weekly or monthly bookings.
  • Return customer incentives: Mark's exceptional hospitality could extend to special recognition for repeat visitors.
  • Off-season rates: Prices may vary depending on the time of year, with potential discounts during less busy periods.

The best way to inquire about any available offers, rates for specific durations, or seasonal pricing is to contact Elk River Camp and RV directly. Mark's reported helpfulness ensures you'll get accurate and personalized information for your stay.

It was just after dark and we need a place to stay the night on our return trip home to SC. I found Elk River Camp through a Google search and from the beginning, Mark was friendly, helpful and informative. We were escorted to the second loop to a campsite along the river all the way providing information about the campground and how he came about being the owner (over the phone). The site was gravel and level with picnic table and what appeared to be two fire pits. The campground was clean, quiet, our site provided a large pavilion adorned with LED string lights. Amenities were electric and water (Mark advised pressure regulator is required!) We paid $40. After dinner we settled in and slept like babies. The only suggestion is there were trash cans distributed throughout this loop where a dumpster would have been easier to locate. I didn't notice a bath house or restroom facility and the campground seems to be set up for long term seasonal sites. I noticed that some of the sites have hookups located to the BACK OF THE SITE rather than closer to the middle of the sites...this may pose a problem for those who have short water or shore power lines. I would recommend and return for another stay.

Mark is amazing! The friendliest and most hospitable stranger that I have ever met. We pulled in to the camp around 11pm at night and called the number on the sign and Mark answered, as friendly as ever, like we were old pals and took the time out of his Saturday night to help guide us on the phone the campsite. The nicest stranger I have ever encountered. What a beautiful little spot, quiet, right in the river, dog friendly, with water and electric hookups, all for a super reasonable price! Will definitely be coming back! Thank you so so much Mark!

Beautiful RV campgrounds, well maintained and lovely river. The scenery is amazing, the gravel lots level and the water/power hookups are new and work great. The owner Mark was very helpful and we felt welcomed. Even our dogs were allowed to roam and explore. Very close to I-79 in WV. Highly recommended!
