Island View Campground, as an Army Corps of Engineers facility, provides a range of essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience. The focus is on offering robust amenities that cater to both RV and tent campers, ensuring that the natural setting remains the star while convenience is readily available. Here's a look at the services you can expect:
- Spacious Campsites: The campground offers a generous total of 188 sites, accommodating both RVs and tents. A significant highlight, as noted by visitors, is the presence of "HUGE sites," with "most were double-wide so you could fit boat or extra vehicle easily." This ample space provides privacy and comfort, especially for larger groups or those with additional recreational equipment.
- Electric-Only Hookups: Most sites are equipped with electric hookups, providing convenience for RVs and modern tent camping. It's important to note that these are typically "Electric only at site," meaning campers "need to stop at dump station to fill with water." However, "A few spigots located throughout park too" offer additional water access points.
- Modern Restrooms and Showers: The campground provides clean and well-maintained flush toilets and showers, ensuring that campers have access to comfortable facilities during their stay.
- Dump Station: An on-site dump station is available for RVs, facilitating convenient waste disposal before departure.
- Potable Water: While direct water hookups are not at every site, potable water spigots are located throughout the park for easy water replenishment.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, complete with a lantern hanger, perfect for outdoor cooking and enjoying traditional campfire gatherings.

Island View Campground stands out as a prime camping destination in Iowa due to its distinctive features and highlights that enhance the overall visitor experience. These aspects contribute significantly to its popularity and the positive feedback it consistently receives:
- Exceptional Lake Views: A key highlight repeatedly mentioned by visitors is that "Many of the sites had EXCEPTIONAL views of the Lake Rathbun." This direct visual connection to "Iowa's Ocean" provides a picturesque backdrop for camping and allows campers to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake.
- Spacious and Well-Maintained Sites: The "HUGE sites" described by campers, many being "double-wide," offer ample room for vehicles, boats, and comfortable outdoor living. The overall impression of "Clean, well maintained sites" speaks to the dedication in managing the park.

- Proximity to Rathbun Lake Recreation: Beyond just views, the campground provides direct access to the 11,000-acre Rathbun Lake, which is renowned for fishing (crappie, channel catfish, walleye, largemouth bass), sailing, swimming, and other water sports. Having boat ramps and docks on-site makes this easily accessible.

- Friendly and Helpful Staff: Visitors consistently commend the "Friendly helpful staff," which greatly contributes to a welcoming and supportive environment, making stays more pleasant and smooth.
As an Army Corps of Engineers campground, Island View Campground typically operates on a standardized fee structure determined by the federal government rather than offering frequent, direct promotional discounts like private campgrounds might. However, there are common ways for campers to save or benefit when staying at these federal sites:
- Federal Interagency Passes: Holders of certain federal interagency passes, such as the America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass (specifically the Senior Pass or Access Pass), may receive discounts on camping fees. It is always recommended for eligible individuals to inquire about these benefits when making reservations or checking in.
- Off-Season Rates: While not explicitly stated as a "promotion," camping during the mid-September timeframe, as noted by one reviewer, when the "park was less than 25% full," often means a more serene experience and potentially less competition for prime sites, if not a direct discount. Rates typically vary by season, with peak season (roughly May to September) being higher.
- Reservations via Recreation.gov: While not a "special offer" itself, making reservations in advance, particularly through Recreation.gov, is highly recommended to secure a spot, especially for popular sites or during busy periods. This ensures you get your preferred site and avoids disappointment upon arrival.
For the most current information on fees, reservation policies, or any potential seasonal variations in pricing, it is always best for Iowans to contact Island View Campground directly or visit the official Recreation.gov website where Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds are listed. This ensures you have the most accurate and up-to-date details for planning your trip.

Customer Reviews
We camped in mid-September when park was less than 25% full. HUGE sites, most were double-wide so you could fit boat or extra vehicle easily. Electric only at site, so you need to stop at dump station to fill with water. (A few spigots located throughout park too.) Campground is a couple of miles from highway entrance but such a beautiful drive. Acres of open space throughout.
Clean, well maintained sites. Many of the sites had EXCEPTIONAL views of the Lake Rathbun. Friendly helpful staff. There are so many Wonderful Army Corp of Engineers campgrounds in this state.
I'm not normally a Google Review person, but I feel humbled about how beautiful this experience could've been when we arrived. Such a pretty site, but the mosquito population not being fogged prior to a huge lake population arrived for Labor Day Weekend. That's a problem. We had to travel into Centerville to obtain Skeeter Beater for $15 from Tractor Supply...just to have a decent day with our family. But, that wasn't the worst part. Our kids' paid for a lot that did not indicate that they couldn't pull through. They had already leveled out & set up, & the patience of the individual was not completely nice. She told them, "YOU better back in!" Not coming back to this area ever again. Leaving it in a cloud of mosquitos' they left for us.
We love this campground. It is shaded with beautiful views of the lake. It's electric only but dump and fill stations are very convenient.
Nice roomy spaces. Most sites have some view of the lake. Bathroom/shower house could use a update but still nice. Rock pads, fire pit and table at each site. They have both 30 and 50 amp sites. One of our favorite places to camp.
