Welcome to Lake Wales Ridge SF Reedy Creek Campground, a truly "beautiful camp" nestled within the distinctive ecosystem of the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest in Frostproof, Florida. For Floridians seeking an authentic and serene outdoor experience, this campground offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourselves in one of the state's most ecologically significant natural areas. It's a place where you can disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with nature, surrounded by a landscape that tells a story millions of years in the making.
This isn't your typical amenity-laden resort; instead, it's a pristine natural escape celebrated for its tranquility and accessibility. Visitors consistently highlight its charm, describing it as "clean and quiet." One camper perfectly captured the essence of a stay here, noting how they "spent the weekend tent-camping with friends and hiking on the trails. Gorgeous." This speaks to the primary draw of Reedy Creek Campground: its untouched beauty and the myriad of opportunities for outdoor adventure right at your doorstep.
What makes Lake Wales Ridge State Forest particularly special is its unique geography. It's named after a narrow ridge that once stood as an island when ancient ocean levels covered most of Florida. This isolation allowed its plants and animals to evolve uniquely, resulting in a scrub ecosystem that boasts the highest concentration of rare and endangered plants in the continental United States. Camping here offers not just a getaway, but a chance to be part of preserving and appreciating this vital part of Florida's natural heritage. For locals, finding such an affordable, peaceful, and ecologically rich environment for camping is a true treasure, providing an accessible pathway to exploring the wild heart of their own state.
Lake Wales Ridge SF Reedy Creek Campground is strategically located at 1585 Rucks Dairy Rd, Frostproof, FL 33843, USA. This address places it squarely within the vast and ecologically significant Lake Wales Ridge State Forest, specifically on the Arbuckle tract, in the heart of Polk County, Central Florida. This region is a true gem for those who appreciate natural beauty, diverse ecosystems, and a quieter pace of life compared to Florida's more crowded coastal or theme park destinations.
The campground's location offers an ideal balance of secluded natural immersion and practical accessibility. While it feels wonderfully remote, it remains reachable via Rucks Dairy Road, a dirt road that leads off Lake Arbuckle Road. This makes it accessible for both tent campers and RVs (though be mindful of the "no electricity" status for some sites, as detailed in the 'Services Offered' section). Frostproof, a charming small town nearby, provides essential amenities such as grocery stores, gas stations, and local eateries, ensuring that campers can easily resupply. As a reviewer noted, it’s "Under 10 miles from Save A Lot, Dollar General, Family Dollar, McDonald's and Citco," highlighting its surprising convenience despite its wild setting.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the accessibility to extensive trail systems is a major draw. The Lake Wales Ridge State Forest itself boasts over 20 miles of hiking trails, including significant portions of the Arbuckle Trail, part of the Florida Forest Service's Trailwalker Hiking Program. These trails traverse a variety of terrains, from forest wetlands to ancient, dry scrub communities, offering diverse opportunities for hiking, trail-running, and birding. The presence of the "Reedy Creek Loop" trail directly connected to the campground further enhances its appeal for hikers.
Beyond hiking, the area provides opportunities for bicycling, horseback riding (on designated trails), fishing in nearby lakes and streams, hunting (in designated areas during season), and extensive wildlife viewing. Being within the Lake Wales Ridge State Forest means you are in a prime location to spot rare and endangered species, making every hike an exciting discovery. Apr 06, 2023 · TheBikejoe 72We stayed in site 8 on the east side of the road. 7 and 8 were a little close together but there was no one there besides us and someone in site 6. It's a nice quiet spot with fire ring, grill and a large picnic table. No water or power so bring that with you. Sites get plenty of sun during the day so your solar will get sun. Porta John's were clean and stocked. They had a few large Huntsman spiders and over sized roaches but that's to be expected out here. Not much to do other than taking a quick hike and relaxing by the fire. It's pretty dark out there so star gazing is a possibility. No real traffic at night so it's just you and the crickets. Bear signs are up in a few places, I'd suggest keeping bear spray on you at all times. All in all a good experience.
Nov 10, 2023 · supernauticaVery quiet, and private campground. Perfect for unwinding, and reconnecting with the essentials that truly matter.
Feb 28, 2021 · Nature LoverThis was the second time I stayed here. The site where I stayed was a primitive site. So no running water or power. That being said you would need to bring everything you would need for your stay. There were 2 portaJohn's that were clean and maintained. The area was nicely manicured and clearly marked sites. That being said the first time I stayed there was a bit of confusion with some of the guests. But that was easily resolved. There were tent sites and RV sites. Two cars max per site and there was a place to park your car if it did not fit on site. Only rv sites had access to drive directly into the site. The rest had barriers to prevent driving into them. It sounds worse then it actually is. There is also a large pavilion for day usage which was nice. The ranges dis drive by a couple of times, that was also nice to see. There is a dumpster that was a good distance away from the sites and it did had a locking bar in case critters came by. It is also dog friendly.
