Introduction / Overview
For Pennsylvanians who love the rugged beauty of the mountains but prefer modern conveniences during their stay, the Lower Campground at Kettle Creek State Park is the ideal destination. Situated in a scenic valley in western Clinton County, the Lower Campground is the primary, most accessible, and most feature-rich camping area within this beautiful state park. It offers a comfortable base for families, RV enthusiasts, and tent campers alike, providing a perfect blend of wilderness immersion and essential amenities.
Unlike its rustic counterpart, the Upper Campground, the Lower Campground is centrally located along the gentle flow of Kettle Creek itself, an area originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. This location offers many sites that back directly up to the water, giving campers the unique opportunity to fish or launch a kayak just steps from their door. With a season that stretches from early April all the way through to mid-December (past the popular antlered deer season), it provides one of the longest camping seasons in the region, allowing locals to enjoy the full spectrum of Pennsylvania’s natural beauty, from spring blossoms to deep winter snows. Visitors consistently praise the maintenance of the facilities, often highlighting the notably clean and well-kept nature of the restroom and shower houses, a key factor for a relaxing camping trip.
The setting is undeniably "out in the middle of nowhere," as one reviewer noted, offering a truly peaceful mountain escape. Yet, it remains the hub of park activity, featuring playgrounds, an ADA accessible fishing pier, and the Nature Center, making it a highly desirable location for a memorable Pennsylvania mountain getaway.
Location and Accessibility
The Lower Campground is centrally located within Kettle Creek State Park, a sprawling natural gem in the Pennsylvania Wilds region. Its formal address is 2996 Kettle Creek Rd, Renovo, PA 17764, USA, placing it along the Kettle Creek and downstream from the massive Alvin R. Bush Dam which formed the Kettle Creek Reservoir.
The park is conveniently located along State Route 4001, just a few miles west of PA Route 144, making it easily accessible for all types of vehicles and RVs. Being situated in a valley, the campground is easily navigable. The Lower Campground is the hub of the park, providing the most direct access to the main creek, the park’s sanitary dump station, and the main restroom/shower house facility. While it offers modern accessibility, campers should be prepared for the area’s remote location; essential supplies and fuel require a drive to the nearest town, such as Renovo, reinforcing the need for preparation before arrival. The proximity of many sites to the water is a major draw, but visitors should always remain aware of the natural wildlife in the area, including the occasional timber rattlesnake, which rangers are prepared to safely relocate if sighted.
Services Offered
As the more modern of the two camping areas at Kettle Creek State Park, the Lower Campground provides extensive services designed for comfort and convenience, especially for RV and trailer campers.
Features / Highlights
The Lower Campground is highly sought after by local campers for its unique setting and its proximity to the creek, offering an enhanced outdoor experience with a high level of comfort.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals
The Lower Campground at Kettle Creek State Park represents the ultimate in convenient mountain camping for local Pennsylvanians. It expertly balances the deep seclusion of the state’s “Big Woods” region with modern amenities that make an extended stay comfortable and enjoyable. For residents who own an RV or travel trailer, the high number of electric sites and the presence of a sanitary dump station are invaluable features often hard to find at more rustic state park locations.
Furthermore, its location directly on Kettle Creek and its long operating season provide unique opportunities for avid anglers and outdoor enthusiasts to experience trout fishing and seasonal beauty well beyond the traditional summer months. The consistently clean facilities are a major selling point, demonstrating a high standard of care for a state-run site. For Pennsylvania families, the modern infrastructure, the playgrounds, and the Nature Center offer a secure and engaging environment for children. The Lower Campground is the perfect destination for local users who want to be close to the action—fishing, hiking, and exploring the beautiful Clinton County wilderness—without having to sacrifice the comforts of modern camping. It serves as a superior, well-maintained gateway to the recreational riches of the Pennsylvania Wilds.

We stayed for a week in the non pet area. Our site #35 was at the end and very quiet. Beautiful view of Kettle Creek. Be sure to have full gas tanks since it is a drive to get any supplies or fuel. You are out in the middle of nowhere. Peaceful mountain area. Rated as four stars due to the lack of stoned sites in this section and short turn around area. The pet area has nice stoned sites and fire pits. Our fire pit was behind and on the other side of the RV. It was very muddy after it rained. A ranger did indicate that there were planned improvements coming to this section in the fall. Make sure to bring a fly swatter or two. The biting flies were really bad the week we were there. Also there were rattlesnakes, one by our RV and another down at the other end. We didn’t see them but others told us to watch out for them. The ranger came by and asked us to contact the office or ER number. They would come to catch it and relocate. It was mating season at this time of year. Check out the nature center. There is also a book exchange located inside. I wish it was outside in a box like the little free libraries so others would know about it. We were able to pick up and leave some books which is great when you want to spend the week relaxing. Even if you don’t have a book to exchange they are free. Someone had left DVDs and magazines as well. The bathrooms are the cleanest we had ever seen in a state park. Kudos to the person who faithfully cleans them and takes pride in their work. It is greatly appreciated. We would definitely stay here again.
Jul 18, 2025 · Debby BlackThe lower campground at Kettle Creek State Park is my choice between the two campsites. You can pull in so close to the creek you could almost fish out the back window of your camper. The lower campground is for both campers and tents and has modern electric campsites. The campground has a nature center, playgrounds, ADA accessible fishing pier, sanitary dump station, and restrooms with warm showers. The campground opens in early April and closes in mid-December.
Jun 21, 2025 · Charles JAmazing campground , clean restroom, water available to most sites by less than 300 feet, view of the creek from campsites are one of the amazing experiences you could get ok camping. Staffs and hosts were very friendly , made sure the restrooms are always clean to use irrespective of time of the day. There is no camp store at the ground but near by stores are around 20 min away from sites. Camp sites are moderate in size , paved camp site bed floor , some sites are along the creek and some are located in slope. Fire rings are clean, easily accessible from roads , most of the sites has shades. Carefully pick the day of camping , we went on very humid day and it was bit of tough to be in the area. Small children’s play area in the campground.
Jul 10, 2024 · Prabha ShankarThis is a nice campground and when I stayed there on a long distance hike (PA Wilds Trail) in 2019, the campground hosts were super nice. If you're on Verizon, there's even good cell service. Knocking off a star because there is no option for a tent only site even though there's a State Forest long distance hiking trail running straight through the campground (Donut Hole Trail). So hikers are forced to buy sites for RVs and campers, which is silly. There absolutely need to be at least a couple tent sites here as the Upper Campground is way off any trail that anyone passing through would even have need of a tent on.
Sep 19, 2025 · Jason EnglishThis Campground was awesome. The sites were beautiful, woodsy, well spaced and right up to the creek. Perfect camping in my opinion. Fire rings were nice, spaces were set up well. The creek is stocked but it didn't appear to be super easy to get fish to bite other than the panfish...the others just came to the surface and ate the unending supply of bugs available to them. Bugs were pretty annoying despite applying bug repellent. Bathroom facilities looked new, however, I will say the one place that needed improvement were the showers. Beautiful yes, but the faucets were push on and only lasted 10 seconds(we counted) before the water shut off so you literally would have to keep pushing the faucet on every 10 sec to shower yourself. Also there were no shower heads so it was just a stream that shot out and it was not very comfortable to use or convenient with water literally spraying out at you the way it did. Definitely an area of improvement for sure. Other than that this Campground was pretty awesome and we enjoyed our stay there. We were able to travel rather close by and also catch a few sitings of the elk as well which was super exciting! We would definitely go back.
