Pere Marquette Campground provides a perfect blend of natural seclusion and accessibility to a wealth of activities. Imagine waking up to the sounds of various birds, including owls and woodpeckers, taking in the crisp morning air, and spending your days hiking scenic trails or observing bald eagles in their natural habitat. It's an ideal spot for individuals, couples, and families seeking an affordable and engaging outdoor getaway.
Visitors consistently praise Pere Marquette Campground for its quiet, peaceful ambiance and spacious sites, which are "very spread apart," offering a good degree of privacy. While some note that the sites are gravel and might lack large flat grass spaces for tents, many find suitable spots and appreciate the overall well-maintained nature of the park. The heated shower house is a welcome amenity, especially during cooler months, and the accessibility to the lodge, visitor center, and trails is a major plus. The abundance of birdlife, particularly in the mornings and evenings, is a highlight for many campers. While there isn't a dedicated camp store, the availability of firewood from the camp host and the proximity to the town of Grafton (a short 10-minute drive) for supplies are convenient. Reviews confirm it's a "good place to camp" with "plenty of outside stuff to do and reasonable rates," reflecting its charm as a typical, yet highly enjoyable, state park campground.
Pere Marquette Campground is ideally situated at 62037, Grafton, IL 62037, USA, deep within the vast Pere Marquette State Park. This location places it in the scenic Great River Road region of southwestern Illinois, where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi River. The park itself encompasses over 8,000 acres of forested bluffs, river bottoms, and scenic overlooks, offering a diverse natural environment.
Accessibility to the campground is quite straightforward. Pere Marquette State Park is located on Illinois Route 100, which is also part of both the Great River Road and the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway. This makes for a picturesque drive to the park. For those traveling from major metropolitan areas, the park is approximately an hour's drive north of St. Louis, Missouri, and easily accessible from Alton, Illinois, just 20 miles south. This proximity to major population centers makes it a convenient weekend escape or extended vacation spot for many Illinois residents.
Within the park, the campground is well-located for access to key attractions. As noted by visitors, it's an easy walk to the historic Pere Marquette Lodge, which offers dining, an indoor pool, and a gift shop, as well as the Visitor Center, which provides valuable information about the park's ecology, history, and wildlife. Numerous hiking trails branch out directly from or near the campground, allowing campers to easily embark on adventures into the surrounding forest and bluffs overlooking the Illinois River. While the internal campground roads are gravel and can be winding with some potholes, the overall accessibility to the park's natural and historical features is excellent. The nearby town of Grafton, a short 10-minute drive, provides opportunities for supplies, dining, and other amenities.
As a public state park campground managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Pere Marquette Campground typically operates on a standardized rate structure rather than offering frequent, time-limited promotional deals. However, there are inherent "offers" in the form of affordable rates and specific discounts.
Camping fees are generally reasonable, making it an excellent value for locals seeking an outdoor getaway. As a state park, it participates in federal and state discount programs where applicable. For instance, holders of the Access Pass (for individuals with permanent disabilities) and the Senior Pass (for U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 62 or older) often receive discounts on camping fees, typically 50% off. It's always best to inquire about current rates and specific discount eligibility when making a reservation.
Reservations for campsites can often be made through the ExploreMoreIL™ system, the official Illinois State Parks reservation platform. While a non-refundable reservation fee (e.g., $5) might apply, the overall cost remains highly competitive. Keep an eye on the Illinois Department of Natural Resources website for any seasonal updates or specific events at Pere Marquette State Park that might coincide with your visit, potentially offering added value to your camping experience.

Its suitability stems from several key factors. This accessibility means you don't have to travel far to feel completely removed from urban life.

The spacious, well-separated sites contribute significantly to the peaceful atmosphere, a quality highly valued by those seeking a quiet escape. Furthermore, the diverse activities available – from serious bird watching and extensive hiking to fishing and exploring the historic lodge – cater to a wide range of interests, making it an ideal destination for families, outdoor enthusiasts, or anyone simply looking for a rejuvenating break. Its affordability as a state park campground makes it an excellent value. For any Illinois resident seeking a genuine and memorable connection with nature, Pere Marquette Campground stands out as a prime choice, offering a tranquil and activity-rich environment right in our own backyard.
We tent camped on the electric side. The sites are all gravel (vs. paved) and many don’t have a flat grass space big enough for a tent. We lucked out with our site. It’s an easy walk to the lodge, visitor center, and trails. Shower house is heated. Loved that it very birdy, especially in the morning and evening. Owls, eagles, woodpeckers. No camp store and didn’t see anything in the nearest town. Wood from the camp host burned good though.
Apr 15, 2025 · Terina CarterGood place to camp. Plenty of outside stuff to do and reasonable rates. It may be a little primitive for some, but it's a typical state park type of campground. Decent shower house but, not fancy at all. Dump station and community water spigots so it is a little bit like boondocking. There are electric hookups on the lots and most of the lots are pretty level.
Mar 07, 2025 · Robert WarnerThe park was hit pretty good after the last storm, but they got it cleaned up well for our 1st camping trip of the season. All the park staff were very nice that we encountered. If they had sewer hook-ups at the stations, it would have been perfect! I think we will be back for sure tho.
Mar 25, 2024 · Heather WScott the campground host does a great job, the campground is very nice with lots of mature trees. I wish that they had water run to each site. You will need to bring extra hose if you intend to fill your tanks while here.
Jun 12, 2023 · David ReadWe love Pere Marquette Campground! Nice sites and most are fairly level. We enjoy the surrounding area with the beautiful views. We did not use the bathhouse but our friends did and said the showers were not great.
