River JCT About
For Iowans seeking an authentic and unpretentious outdoor experience, River JCT Campground in Lone Tree offers a hidden gem along the scenic Iowa River. This 12-acre property, managed by Johnson County Conservation, provides a primitive campground setting, making it an ideal choice for tent campers and those with smaller RVs who prioritize immersion in nature over extensive modern amenities. It’s a place where the sounds of the river and the rustling leaves replace the hum of city life, inviting locals to disconnect and enjoy the simple pleasures of camping.
River JCT Campground is uniquely positioned at the confluence of the Iowa River and the English River, which gives the park its distinctive name. This location makes it a prime spot for anglers and paddlers, offering direct access to the Iowa River Water Trail. While some reviews mention the industrial nature of the river in this specific stretch and note some issues with cleanliness, the overarching appeal lies in its secluded feel, mature shade trees, and the opportunity for a genuinely rustic outdoor adventure close to home for many Iowans.
River JCT Campground is situated at 6058-6000 Sand Rd SE, Lone Tree, IA 52755, USA. This location places it along the Iowa River in the southern part of Johnson County, approximately four miles west of Lone Tree and half a mile south of Highway 22 on River Junction Road. For Iowa locals, particularly those in the Iowa City and surrounding areas, its proximity offers a convenient escape to nature without extensive travel.
The campground's direct access to the Iowa River is a significant advantage for those interested in water-based activities. It serves as an access point to the Iowa River Water Trail, a navigable stretch for paddlers. While reviews indicate the river section here might not be the most "scenic" due to "riprap and rebar" and suggest it's "not a great spot to swim," it remains a functional launching point for kayaks, canoes, and small boats via the on-site boat ramp.
Despite its somewhat hidden feel, the campground is accessible. While some reviews mention "a bit too much noise from the nearby highway," indicating its proximity to main routes, this also means relatively easy navigation. The town of Lone Tree is a short drive away, providing basic supplies, gas, and a small-town atmosphere. For more extensive amenities, the larger city of Iowa City is within reasonable driving distance, ensuring campers have access to anything they might need during their stay. The secluded nature of the walk-in tent sites, as highlighted by a reviewer, offers a more intimate connection with the natural surroundings, while other sites cater to car camping and small RVs, albeit with closer spacing.
River JCT Campground provides a concise set of services geared towards a primitive camping experience. Managed by Johnson County Conservation, it focuses on essential amenities for outdoor enthusiasts:
- Primitive Campsites: The campground features 11 non-electric campsites, primarily suited for tent camping. Walk-in tent sites are available and are noted as "nice, especially for a group with multiple tents." Other sites are better for "car camping/small RVs." Each campsite includes a fire ring and a picnic table.
- Latrine Facilities: A vault toilet (latrine) is available on site for restroom needs. It's important to note that, as a primitive campground, there are no modern flush toilets or showers.
- Boat Ramp: A dedicated boat ramp provides convenient access for launching boats onto the Iowa River, ideal for fishing and paddling enthusiasts.
- Picnic Tables: In addition to the picnic tables at each campsite, picnic tables are also available in general use areas.
- Camping Fee: The camping fee is $10 per unit per night for each of the 11 campsites. This makes it a very affordable option for budget-conscious campers.
- First-Come, First-Served: Based on current Johnson County Conservation information, sites at River JCT are typically first-come, first-served, meaning no reservations are usually taken. Campers should arrive early, especially during peak seasons, to secure a spot.

River JCT Campground offers several distinctive features and highlights that appeal to specific types of campers, particularly those from Iowa seeking a more traditional outdoor experience:

- Affordable Camping: With a camping fee of $10 per unit per night, River JCT is an extremely budget-friendly option for Iowans looking for an economical getaway.

- Shaded Environment: "Mature trees provide shaded relief," which is a crucial highlight, especially during Iowa's warm summers. The shade contributes to a more comfortable and enjoyable camping experience.

- Managed by Johnson County Conservation: Being part of the Johnson County Conservation system ensures a commitment to maintaining the natural integrity of the area and providing public access to outdoor recreation.
As a public campground managed by Johnson County Conservation, River JCT Campground typically does not run traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the way a private business might. Its primary "offer" is its consistent affordability and the primitive camping experience it provides. However, Iowans can note the following inherent value points:
- Low Daily Rate: The consistent camping fee of $10 per unit per night is a continuous "special offer" in itself, providing a highly economical way for locals to enjoy the outdoors compared to many other campgrounds.
- First-Come, First-Served Accessibility: While not a discount, the first-come, first-served policy means that spontaneous camping trips are possible without the need for advance reservations or booking fees, offering flexibility for Iowans looking for an impromptu escape.
- Public Access to Natural Resources: As a county conservation area, the primary "promotion" is the maintenance of public access to the Iowa River and surrounding natural areas for recreation such as fishing, paddling, and hiking at a minimal cost.
For the most accurate and current information on camping fees, availability, or any specific local programs that might indirectly benefit campers, it is always recommended to consult the official Johnson County Conservation website or contact them directly. Customer Reviews
Walk-in tent sites are nice, especially for a group with multiple tents. The other sites are better for car camping/small RVs.. they're a little too close to the loop drive and not well spaced. The Iowa River isn't scenic here: Lots of riprap and rebar. Local junkies have left a few needles laying around, so be careful. Not a great spot to swim.
Nice little hidden gem. Great campground but there's a bit too much noise from the nearby highway.
It's a a great camping spot other than the toilet. It's nasty it's been their for at least 40 years. You have to walk to far to use the toilet. It didn't bother me when camping there was free. Fishing is usually good if the water levels are reasonable boat ramp clean. Patrolled heavily by law enforcement
Definitely needs to be patrolled more between the hours of 11pm-3am. We camped three sleepless nights here because of the loud music, screaming and non stop vehicle traffic between these hours. Seen one Sheriff drive through just before 10pm. Otherwise it would be a nice quiet place.
Its a very small but nice place, no electrical hookups or a bathroom that is very close to the campsite. You have picnic tables a fire pit and a place to set your tent up.If you have an RV you can or will be close to the boat ramp, this is the only place that you can park them.
