Robert W. Craig Campground is nestled at 787 Robert Craig Ln, Elk Garden, WV 26717, USA. Elk Garden is a small, unincorporated community, and the campground itself offers a sense of being truly immersed in nature.
For West Virginia residents, while the destination is rewarding, the journey requires careful navigation. Access roads from Keyser, WV, or Westernport, MD, are described as "narrow, winding and have steep switchbacks." While big rigs "can manage them at a low speed," one reviewer explicitly advised, "I would NOT take the road to or from Keyser with a camper," recommending WV Route 46 to and from Westernport, MD, as a better alternative. This insight is crucial for campers, especially those with larger RVs or trailers. Despite these challenging approaches, the remoteness contributes to the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful surroundings that many seek in a camping experience. The campground's position near Jennings Randolph Lake means access to water-based recreation is a primary draw, even if a direct path from the campground to the lake was not readily found by one visitor. This blend of natural seclusion and the need for cautious access defines the unique journey to Robert W. Craig Campground, making it an adventure in itself for locals prepared for the roads.

It is highly recommended to call ahead for reservations, especially during peak seasons, as this is a popular ACE campground. The friendly staff or camp host can provide the most current information on site availability, specific amenities per site (e.g., length, levelness), road conditions, and any updates regarding the on-site store hours or lake access. For residents of West Virginia, Robert W. Craig Campground presents a highly suitable and appealing option for an outdoor retreat, particularly for those seeking a well-maintained, electric-equipped camping experience near a beautiful lake. Its operation by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ensures a standard of cleanliness and organization that many campers appreciate, providing a reliable and pleasant environment.
The primary appeal for locals is its location near Jennings Randolph Lake. This pristine lake offers a fantastic array of water-based activities, including a swimming beach, picnic areas, and opportunities for boating and fishing. The presence of unique geological features like Waffle Rock nearby adds an extra layer of interest and exploration for families and curious adventurers. While the access roads require careful navigation, for West Virginians familiar with mountain driving, this journey is part of the charm, leading to a rewarding and secluded destination.
Furthermore, the campground's focus on electric sites makes it particularly convenient for RV and trailer owners who desire power without the need for full hookups, striking a balance between comfort and a traditional camping feel. The friendly and accommodating staff, along with well-kept restrooms and paved sites, contribute to a hassle-free stay. Importantly, the "unplugged" nature of the campground, with limited cell signal, provides a much-needed opportunity for West Virginians to truly disconnect from digital distractions and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of their home state. For those seeking a peaceful, organized, and amenity-rich (for electric-only) camping experience close to stunning natural attractions, Robert W. Craig Campground is an excellent choice for your next West Virginia adventure.

I visited Robert Craig Campground in May '23. I had a great experience. The reason for the 4/5 stars is because they only have electric sites. If they had full-hookup I would give them 5/5. The staff is real nice, very well maintained. The store has weird hours but if you need something, a camp host will open the store on off hours. Restrooms and showers are kept clean. If you plan on doing work while visiting, there is very poor cell signal so consider yourself unplugged. The best cell signal was1-2 bars of LTE, no G. I plan on going back myself but without full-hookup I'll be leaving the family at home.
May 22, 2023 · Chris BNice ACE campground. Most of the sites are very nice all are paved. Some have addition of gravel to extend the length. Some are short and some are far from level even though they’re paved. There is one shower house so if you’re in the higher numbered loop you need to walk through the wooded path or around the road. Bath house and shower house maybe a 6/10. Mostly clean but pretty dated and lack of upkeep in terms of painting etc. the roads getting from Keyser, WV or Westernport MD are narrow, winding and have steep switchbacks. Not big rig friendly but big rigs can manage them at a low speed. I would NOT take the road to or from Keyser with a camper. We did it getting there and then did 46 to amd from Westernport. There are a couple of nice hiking trails. There’s no path, that we found, from the campground to the lake. The lake is beautiful and clear and has a swimming beach, picnic area and overlook with Waffle rock (an interesting 300 million year old unique geological pattern, and lake construction history.
Jun 05, 2021 · Cece & Dave Donovan-GreeneNice little Army Corps campground. Well kept and it's surprisingly nice for the area. The camp store has very limited hours and you have to travel off the mountain if it's closed, so prepare ahead of time. Short drive to the WV boat launch at Jennings Randolph.
Jul 03, 2024 · Nathan RohrbaughThis is our second campsite. I'm just a beginner camper, but I'm wildly excited. The children didn't want to leave. Every day there was some kind of entertainment for the children. Thank you, we enjoyed it very much.
Jul 11, 2023 · Mary PrasvirynaJust finished our trip here and the campsites are really nice. They are clean, shady, and decent size. The restrooms are cleaned periodically but they were very clean. We ran into a few things that were kinda disappointing but mostly because of covid not because of the park. No visitors lake was closed and you have to use their firewood and most of the firewood was damp so it was hard to get a decent fire started. But over all was a nice trip and we will be coming back again! Also the lake picnic area is like a min away driving time and has a amazing view
