Introduction / Overview: Acadia’s Best-Kept Secret in Downeast Maine
For Mainers who cherish the raw, rugged beauty of the coast but prefer an escape from the seasonal bustle of Mount Desert Island, Schoodic Woods Campground is the definitive destination. Located within Acadia National Park, but uniquely situated on the quiet, stunning Schoodic Peninsula, this modern campground offers an unparalleled blend of national park access and secluded tranquility. Opened in 2015, Schoodic Woods represents a contemporary approach to camping, providing spacious, very private, and heavily wooded sites that cater to tents, RVs, and trailers alike.
Often referred to as the "quiet side" of Acadia, the Schoodic Peninsula offers a different, more intimate experience of the park. Guests consistently praise the quiet solitude, the dark, star-filled night skies, and the ability to step directly onto hiking and biking trails that traverse the peninsula’s beautiful landscape. This is a place where the focus is on the environment—the rocky coast, the dense woods, and the abundant wildlife—making it a true gem of Downeast Maine.

This campground is perfect for a number of reasons. It’s so quiet here. I loved being able to take trails straight out from the campground and hike the beautiful peninsula. Winter Harbor is a quick bike ride or bus ride away. Has great restaurants and somewhere to buy groceries. The landscape is incredible. You can see all wildlife ( if you have dogs watch out for porcupines) Go to blueberry hill and take the flat trail to find plenty of blueberries. You can take a ferry over to Bar Harbor. It’s a gem!
Aug 15, 2025 · Marcelle AlvernazThis is a sensational representation of the “quiet” life of downeast Maine. The sites are very roomy and private. At night it is very quiet and very dark. Millions of stars to gaze at in quiet solitude. The area AND the campground is very family and dog friendly. Many MANY trails to hike, carriage roads to hike or bike, and gorgeous scenic drives. If you need a playground on site…then you should look elsewhere…but if your kids love the outdoors and using their imagination…then these spacious private sites fit the bill. We stay several times a year and still love it. No full hookups, but they have a clean dump station.
Aug 24, 2025 · Tom FarleyI loved this campground. It was spacious enough for our rig and pickup truck and the site was clean and level. No sewer hookup but not a deal breaker. It was also beautifully secluded enough that you didn't see your neighbors. We stayed at site B14. The only issue we had was the water spigot leaked. When I addressed it with the ranger she said they would take care of it but it would probably be after we left. I hated to leave the water on due to the leaking so it was a little hassle to turn the water on and off. Although we visited Bar Harbor several days, this spot is in close proximity to the town of Winter Harbor where there is a grocery store and plenty of quality restaurants! We loved driving around the loop, getting out and exploring the area as well as meeting the local folks! It's a very lovely campground and so relaxing within Acadia National Park. Definitely worth staying here and would come back again!
Jun 21, 2025 · Tracey MilburnWe have stayed at campgrounds in all four corners of the country and places in between. This was probably our favorite campground. It was quiet, clean, and private. The bathhouse (no showers) was modern and spotless. The campsites are tucked in amongst the trees and feel secluded. To get a campsite, you have to be online and ready to reserve as the clock hits 10:00 Eastern Time. We did this and tried to get site B-28 but someone got it from under us. We picked site B-19 as a second choice and it turned out to be so much better. B-19 was a pull through, but it was long enough to make it private. If you get a chance, definitely try to stay at this campground. B Loop has electric and water connections. There are also some good hiking on the peninsula and nice bike trails. While staying at Schoodic Woods, we enjoyed visiting Bunker’s Seafood and Spirits and Musquito Brewing.
Aug 21, 2025 · The Princess and The TrollHuge 100’ lot size drive through, great for our 40’ American Tradition pulling a Jeep Park rangers are so friendly and we are so lucky to have them. The sites around there are so beautiful. Don’t miss Thunder Hole but be sure to check when it has high tide.
