For military personnel, veterans, and their families in Illinois, finding a reliable and enjoyable campground can be a fantastic way to relax and reconnect with nature. Scott Air Force Base FamCamp, located right on Scott AFB, offers a dedicated and convenient option for those with base access. This FamCamp is designed to provide a comfortable and accessible camping experience, offering a serene escape without venturing far from the support and amenities of the base community. It’s a specialized retreat, tailored to the unique needs of our service members and their loved ones.
While the FamCamp aims to provide a solid camping experience, it's important to acknowledge that like any facility, it can have its challenges. Recent feedback from a user highlighted some maintenance issues, including non-operational laundry facilities and a temporary water outage. However, this same reviewer noted the excellent demeanor of the staff, stating, "the staff are very nice on the phone when making reservations. Also met one of the maintained guys last week and he was very nice to talk to." This indicates a commitment to service, even when facing operational hurdles, and a willingness to address issues. The individual noted an increase in their rating from 2 to 3 stars, indicating improvement efforts are being made. It's important for visitors to check current conditions directly with the FamCamp management to ensure the best possible experience during their stay.
Despite occasional maintenance concerns, Scott Air Force Base FamCamp holds a special place for many, being described as a "favorite near St Louis." Its tranquil setting, featuring two serene lakes, provides ample opportunities for fishing, birdwatching, and enjoying the outdoors. Campers can even bring their own kayaks to explore the non-motorized waters, adding to the peaceful ambiance. Beyond the immediate campground, guests have access to a wider array of Moral, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) activities on base, such as archery, golf, and various recreational programs. This unique combination of dedicated military camping with broader base amenities makes Scott Air Force Base FamCamp a distinct and valuable resource for those it serves in Illinois.
Scott Air Force Base FamCamp is conveniently located at Gunn St, Scott AFB, IL 62225, USA. This placement directly on Scott Air Force Base offers a unique advantage for military personnel, retirees, and authorized Department of Defense civilians and their families. Access to the campground requires base entry, which is controlled and ensures a secure environment for all campers. Being within the base perimeter provides an added layer of safety and convenience, as many base services are just a short drive away.
The base itself is situated approximately 20 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri, making it a relatively accessible option for those in Southern Illinois and the greater St. Louis metropolitan area. This proximity means that while campers can enjoy the peace of a campground, they are also within reach of major urban attractions, shopping, and dining. The FamCamp is specifically located within the Scott Lake Recreation area, nestled among trees and overlooking two base fishing lakes, which further enhances its appeal as a serene outdoor retreat. Navigating to the FamCamp within the base is straightforward, with clear signage guiding visitors to the designated camping areas.
As a military FamCamp, Scott Air Force Base FamCamp typically operates with standard, set rates for its eligible users (active-duty, reserve, retired military personnel, and authorized DoD civilians). While specific, limited-time "promotions" in the traditional retail sense are not commonly advertised, the underlying value proposition is the already subsidized and affordable pricing offered to military members. For instance, RV sites with water/electric hookups are generally available at a rate of $25 per day, with primitive/tent camping at $10 per night per tent, and overflow/dry camping at $10 per day.
It's always recommended for prospective campers to contact the Outdoor Recreation office directly at (618) 256-2067 to inquire about the most current rates and any potential seasonal offers or specific programs they might be running. Occasionally, MWR (Moral, Welfare, and Recreation) facilities on military bases may have specific "deals" or packages, especially during off-peak seasons or for longer stays, but these would need to be confirmed directly with the FamCamp or the broader Outdoor Recreation department. The primary "offer" remains the exclusive access and affordability provided to the military community for this dedicated camping facility.

For military personnel, veterans, and their families residing in Illinois, Scott Air Force Base FamCamp offers a uniquely suitable and highly convenient camping destination. Its location directly on Scott AFB at Gunn St provides an inherent sense of security and exclusive access to a dedicated recreational space that understands the needs of the military community. This exclusivity means a familiar and supportive environment, differentiating it from public campgrounds for those with base access. For Illinois locals who are part of the military family, this convenience and security are invaluable, allowing for a truly stress-free getaway.

This commitment to good customer service ensures that concerns are addressed and campers feel valued, which is crucial for a positive experience. The setting itself is a major draw: two peaceful fishing lakes, an abundance of birds and frogs, and shaded campsites provide a serene escape that feels far removed from daily life, even while being on base. Overall, it's not a good campground, which is disappointing. Laundry facilities have been out of service for 1 month so far. Last night the water stopped working (looks like somebody hit a tap with theor vehicle and they cut off water to the half the camp ground instead of just usolating the borken tap), and there is no number to report issues during off hours to look into moving spots. If you have anything towed over 30ft you will struggle with many of the spots and in result, many spots are full of ruts (and the now damaged tap). Maybe good for a 1 or 2 night stay but staying here TDY has been very difficult, and unfortunately there are no other options for us. Whoever is in charge of recreation services really should do better. On the plus side the staff are very nice on the phone when making reservations. Also met one of the maintained guys last week and he was very nice to talk to. Edit 4/13 i decided to bump this up from 2 stars to 3. The water incident was the on call water company who felt the need to punish everybody instead of just isolating the affected spot. Supposedly they are fixing the washing machines this weekend so we will see if that actually gets resolved soon.
Apr 13, 2025 · Chris Gimbert (Koriax)This is a favorite near St Louis.. quiet and have 2 lakes. Plenty of frogs, birds, and you can bring your own kayak (no motorized vehicles on the water). MWR also have other things to do such as Archery
Apr 26, 2025 · Jeff FigaroClean, quiet with nice amount of space between campers! This facility has about the cleanest, newest bathroom/laundry of all the bases we’ve traveled! Remember to have your camper registration/plate number in hand when you reserve a spot. You are not allowed to reserve a spot without it. Plenty of areas to walk or ride a bike too.
Mar 13, 2023 · T&BNot an amazing campground per se, but for the price and the surroundings it is ok. We used the laundry facility and both washers and both dryers were working. There are fishing ponds right there and for $7 the entire family can fish (license is good for a year). The area itself is well maintained and close to the golf course and the rubbery walking/running track. There isn’t sewer hookups but a dump station right there (several people had a portable sewage tank to transport and dump), and of course there is no WiFi. With WiFi and full hookups this place would be amazing. WiFi - None AT&T Cell Signal - OK (a couple bars)
May 16, 2025 · Jackie KillianAn outstanding RV and fishing area on base! We lived here for a couple months as we were PCSing (thank goodness it wasn't the busy season yet because they limit you to 30 days max). It's on the far side of base, so it is quiet and secluded. There are not that many lots but they are shaded and good sized. The showers and laundry all worked well and were pretty clean. The area is beautiful to walk around or go fishing. Only downside is these are not full hookups (only electric and water). So bring a portable dump tank if you will be here a while. They do have a dump station on the premise, so still 5 stars.
