Introduction / Overview: Your Exclusive Island RV Retreat on Lake Ontario
For New York residents with an RV, trailer, or motorhome, finding a truly exceptional destination for a getaway can transform a simple trip into a lifelong memory. Sun Outdoors Association Island, nestled in the scenic Thousand Islands region of Northern New York, offers just that: a unique, 65-acre island experience right on the shores of Lake Ontario. This RV resort is not just a place to park; it's a destination, a gated community, and a hub of activity, all wrapped up in a historical and naturally beautiful setting.
Formerly a retreat for General Electric and an Olympic sailing center, the island is rich in history and boasts stunning 360-degree water views. The resort provides a diverse range of accommodations, though it is renowned for its full hookup RV sites, many offering spectacular sunrise or sunset views over the Great Lake. Visitors appreciate the resort's ability to handle large vehicles, noting that while some internal roads can be tight with big rigs like a 40-foot toy hauler, the staff is often "out in force" and helpful during busy periods to ensure a smooth check-in process.
While the resort is known for its beautiful daytime scenery and excellent location, potential visitors should be aware of a common challenge in this waterfront environment. As noted in customer feedback, the evening hours, particularly in the summer, can bring heavy swarms of flying insects, like gnat-like mosquitoes, which may limit comfortable outdoor time after dusk. However, the resort’s extensive amenities and stunning views, often described as "jaw-dropping gorgeous," generally contribute to a highly positive overall experience, making it a prominent destination for New York campers.
Location and Accessibility: A Private Island Sanctuary Accessible by Bridge
Sun Outdoors Association Island is uniquely situated on its own 65-acre island, accessible via a causeway and bridge, right on Lake Ontario in the Town of Henderson, New York. Its precise location places it in the heart of the beautiful 1000 Islands region, serving as an ideal base for exploring Northern New York's historic villages, state parks, and waterfront attractions.
The resort’s official address for GPS navigation is:
15530 Snowshoe Rd, Henderson, NY 13650, USA
For New Yorkers traveling from Central or Southern parts of the state, the drive takes you toward the US-Canadian border region, a journey that ultimately delivers you to an exclusive island setting. Accessibility to the island itself is straightforward via the road, but local users should heed traveler advice that the road leading to the causeway may be narrow and winding. Patience is key, especially when maneuvering a large RV like a motorhome or a 40-foot fifth wheel, but once on the island, the interior roads are paved, and the destination is secure, given its status as a gated property.
The resort is approximately an hour's drive from the region's most iconic attractions, such as Boldt Castle and the quaint river towns along the St. Lawrence River, offering a perfect blend of secluded island life and easy day-trip accessibility.

Conclusion: Why This Place Is Suitable for Locals
Sun Outdoors Association Island is perfectly suited for New York locals, particularly those who embrace the RV lifestyle and are looking for a unique, all-in-one vacation experience that maximizes their time on the water. For New Yorkers, the Great Lakes offer a maritime environment often less accessible than the coast, and this island RV park provides exclusive access to Lake Ontario's stunning vistas and excellent fishing opportunities. The resort-style amenities, including the pool, dining options, and on-site marina, mean that once you arrive, you have everything you need for a relaxing stay, minimizing the need for constant trips off the island.
It acts as a luxurious launching point for exploring the historic and recreational gems of the 1000 Islands region, all while having a full-hookup, often lakeside, site waiting for your return. While the nighttime bug issues are a practical consideration that requires preparation (extra insect repellent is advised!), the daytime beauty, friendly staff, and wealth of activities make the investment worthwhile. For New Yorkers seeking to truly "spend the 4th on the Great Lakes" or simply enjoy a quiet week of waterfront relaxation with their own rig, this destination is a premier choice that blends the comfort of a resort with the freedom of RV travel.

This place was massive! We spent 4th of July weekend here with our granddaughter and had a wonderful time. Our check in process was fast and easy with it being a very busy holiday weekend. The staff was out in force directing us where to go and getting us checked in. We took the long route to our site near the Marina and it was a bit tight at times with a 40ft toy hauler but we made it through. Backing in was fine as a group of 10 gathered while we waiting for the boat ramp to clear and I could get into my site. Unfortunately, the audience was disappointed as it went in the first try. We didn't have any issues with hookups during our stay. Our site was a bit narrow for our wide body RV so that left a higher step to get in and out of our RV. The campground has a nice camp store, restaurant an ice cream parlor onsite so it made the hot days a little cooler. Overall I would come back here again but not at the holiday prices. For what we paid, I have received better sites and more amenities at other camp grounds but now we can say we spent the 4th on the Great Lakes.
Sep 23, 2025 · James StinnettWe recently stayed here and had very mixed feelings. During the daytime, this campground is absolutely beautiful — the scenery is wonderful, and the location has so much potential for a relaxing getaway. Unfortunately, once 6 PM hits, the experience changes completely. The bugs are unbearable. The moment you turn on a light inside or outside your camper, you’re swarmed by gnat-like mosquitoes. Sitting by the fire, making s’mores, or simply enjoying the evening outside is impossible. Even something as simple as letting the dog out results in an infestation inside the camper, no matter how fast you move. We ended up having to end our evenings as soon as the sun went down, which was extremely disappointing. When we brought this issue to management, we were told, “It is what it is,” and that nothing could be done — even though we decided to cut our trip short because of it. Overall, while the daytime setting is great, the nights made the trip nearly unmanageable. If you’re considering staying here, be prepared that your outdoor experience will likely end by early evening
Aug 23, 2025 · Krissie DiMenoThe Island was a very nice, relaxed feel. The staff very friendly. Store hours and pool hours was too short. Opening at 9am closing at 6:00 and 8:00. Restaurant was only a concession stand. No swimming on the lake although many still did without issue. Bath house was clean. A lot of bugs which is understandable being on island. I would like to see more activities for adults such as bands, paint and sips and games. A great place to just chill and enjoy lake views.
Jul 21, 2025 · Lisa HarrisThis campground is on an island, so beautiful!! The sites are gravel, have electric, water and sewer. Showers/bathhouse weren't the best but not bad just needed a bit of cleaning.
Sep 15, 2025 · artsydoll - Kelly ParkerThe grounds are very nicely maintained, and the roadway leading up to the camp grounds is quite stunning. Prices are average, however after signing up for emails we were able to book a stay with a 30% off discount code that was emailed to us-so signing up is of benefit. Exceptional staff at check in, very accommodating in extending our stay an additional night. A helpful guide is provided to bring you directly to your site, he also went over the site map with us and gave pointers as to where to walk with our dog. The views are outstanding, the bathroom and showers are clean-although we have an rv and don’t use them I like to check them out to add to reviews. In our first night we’d seen dozens of geese with their new offspring, an eagle, osprey and dozens of chipmunks and squirrels. While walking the ground we see they have a very nice playground area, tennis court, basketball court and restaurant type area with pizza, ice cream and milk shakes, I believe there’s also a bar. Spaces are generously spaced, with four rings and picnic tables. Overall, beautiful location, worth every penny.
